Since I saw BLADE RUNNER for the very first time as a kid, it is my absolutely number one favorite movie of all time (at least for the last 20 years) ...
your taste in movies sucks, man. At least take a movie with a proper plot where the main guy isn't just a bystander to the actions of the antagonist (roy batty).
King of Crabs what's this obsession with 'proper plot'? most of your lives were just directories to bigger things. for those of us who grow old, life becomes a repetition of recurring themes until the final curtain. some people appreciate plots that move away from childish themes
The greatest movie ever made, of any genre! I loved this shot film, and I loved seeing stuff apparently left out (the talk with Taffy at the bar is longer than the one I remember in the film). Also interestig how many of the extras' costumes looked like the British New Wave/Synthpop fashion then being worn by musicians and they fans at the time. Thank you for posting this!
During the last minute, Ridley Scott suggests a future where enormous corporations could eventually move into both bioengineering (Replicants) and space mining. Not only are we nearly there, but this also is an early sign that he intended a mild connection between Tyrell and the Weyland Corporation seen in Prometheus and Alien. The connection was also made in the bonus materials of the 2012 Prometheus BD release.
+Campbell Evans When corporations goes too far the poor people revenge themselves agains them so this is why it would never happen because corporation are the vains and the civils are the cells that fuel them.
5 years later and this is where were heading.. A degenerate mix of western oriental cultures, industrial conglomerates, Ai, overpopulation in megacities, 5K in an exotic surrounding
Yeah, it sounded like cheap Blaxploitation music. I figure they had to fill it with something. Maybe Vangelis hadn't finished their sound track, or these producers didn't have the rights to use it.
Jon Piper I think Kruder and Dorfmeister on their album, DJ Kicks, take the main riff and build out a really chilled-out electro tune to it...the album is brilliant, btw.
It's MASTERPIECE by THE TEMPTATIONS in their self-titled album of 1973 produced by the great Norman Whitfield (who gaves us CARWASH soundtrack and other great funky stuff) and featuring the wah-wah guitar of "Wah Wah" Watson. It's strange they use this tune for this… But, it's great funky music with lots of groove and orchestra !
Shout out to the Little Blade Runners! You fans rule! Thanks to Ridley Scott, the Master, who cranked out this great film among which there is no equal, not even his own films which, sadly, have declined in story quality but hopefully he'll be better with any new stuff he has left in his magician's hat. He is in his late 70s so let's enjoy him while we can. The Blade Runner kicks ass worldwide! We as fans are proud to carry the torch once Ridley and Harrison Ford disappear into the next world. It's up to us to hold onto what I still feel is the underlying message of Blade Runner : to cherish life, to enjoy it while you can, as we only have a limited time to us, and in that time, let's be heroes to others. Are you inspired to do what's right? That's why we honor movie heroes, even when they fall, we retain what we learn from them. This is the future once foretold in the original 1982 film. Let's fight for it! We are the heroes! We are the Blade Runners! God bless and enjoy!
I'm shocked at the attention to detail put in to things you and I would never see, especially on film in 1982- digital video has made it possible to get far sharper images than they ever thought possible, yet they still took the time to make the parking meters legit with tiny details, or tiny furniture in windows of buildings in the background of a flying vehicle in rain!! Even just typing that made me shocked all over again. That is dedication.
9:37 It must be great to have that skill to be able to sketch out what you want so everyone else can go "ooOHHhhh, now I get it" and then not only have your team build what you want but you're also all be on the same page
I still can't believe they missed the phone/comm aspect. Even Dick Tracy had wristwatch phones/radios --perhaps it was an economy in decline aspect that prevented/stunted development?. Still my favorite sci-fi film.
This was great! I'd never seen this before. On a funny note, it's amazing how important sound/music is to a film. If BR had a groovy disco score like this, clearly the tone would be drastically different than the atmospheric multilayered sounds of Vangelis. Thank goodness Ridley chose Vangelis! Cheers from Tokyo (Blade Runner's sister city)
I just love the Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis. They should have gotten him to do the sequel, Jan Zimmer does the world's most forgettable soundtracks ever. He murdered the one for the new version of Dune too.
Greatest Sci-Fi movie of all time! Pure magic! One of the few movies I never get tired of watching. I'm super glad he released the Final Cut in 2007. It made a great film, even greater.
It's amazing all the attention to detail that goes into a film, even if it is never seen like that parking meter it might look like something is missing if it isn't in the film.
Two minimal details: 1. You can pay parking meter cashless via “magnetic card” (5:04). 2. Car got screens where you have “digital displays to move the vehicle” including maps (7:57). 2019 sounds familiar?
It's stunning how accurate they could be and how incorrect they could be when you look at the "BR Curse" (the idea that any corporation shown in the film, except for Coca-Cola was doomed). This is one of the reasons I really appreciated Villeneuve's decision to make 2049 an alternate future based on 2019 shown in BR rather than our actual 2019.
It would have been so fun to be an extra on this film. They put so much effort into this world. It’s impressive as hell. The tiniest of details were took into consideration. That’s why it holds up today. My favorite sci-fi movie. I love bladerunner
I reluctantly watched the miniatures and explanations of the special effects and then skipped ahead because I don't want to lose the immersion when I watch Blade Runner the next time.
The shot at 3:25 the buildings in the Warner Bros Backlot are still there got a chance to walk around and view them and reimagining what the set would look like, the quality of the film still holds true today
Kill Weekly Featuring the article Guard Dogs you Never Feed. Great stuff. I remember reading an article in StarLog magazine about the set decorators having created these fake magazines for the news stand on set even though they never appear on camera.
You say "one of" the convention reels, leading me to wonder how many other reels there may be in existence and available for 'net viewing. If there are, can you post them too? This one is fantastic. Dying to see the others!
The film had photoshop tech in Deckard's apartment long before it was ever made. And now we see even further into the future with parking meters paid with smart cards.
the world of Blade Runner wouldn't be a very good life to live but for a film it's one of the most interesting and beautiful films.... none of this computer color coded BS or any of the stupid crap they did with 2049 ugh, naww the original is the best and they shouldn't have done a sequel....
In retrospect, yeah, probably. Being an extra is tough and boring, though. You get crappy food, too. You get "craft service" while the stars get "catering." It's more for bragging rights than fun.
I wonder how outrageous they thought those street parking rates were, at 5:40. There were years in the 1970s where annual inflation exceeded 10%, so they probably didn’t seem outlandish even at the time. These days, as an uninformed viewer, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that it cost $12 US to park for an hour in downtown Los Angeles.
Can’t believe they imagined that 2019 would look like that. 😅 But still we are ahead in some technology like cellphones. Still flying car is physically not possible yet and won’t be for ages. Gravity is hard to beat. Really cool documentary. Didn’t remember that ridley is such a good drawer. Such an amazing film. It has it all amazing story, OST, casting, direction what else you could possibly want 5/5 movie.
RIP Syd Mead, an inspiring artist and visual futurist.
This short film is like finding an ancient ruin and uncovering all the layers.
Since I saw BLADE RUNNER for the very first time as a kid, it is my absolutely number one favorite movie of all time (at least for the last 20 years) ...

Rutger Hauer R.I.P... *_BLADE RUNNER RULES..._*
You can just see that Rutger was shifting into/staying in character as he looked around and waited.

So did I
Sad to hear about Syd Meads death. Thank you for your incredible contributions and thank you for coming.

Wrong on the Former. If only you could see what I've seen with you're eyes.
Care to explain?

@@TheRevolus "When corporations goes too far the poor people revenge themselves agains them" Really? When did this happen?
One of the greatest sci fi films ever. This is wonderful insight!
That 70's music at the very beginning seems so out of place, lol. This was awesome.
Yeah, it sounded like cheap Blaxploitation music.
I figure they had to fill it with something. Maybe Vangelis hadn't finished their sound track, or these producers didn't have the rights to use it.
sounds like a slowed version of this bob james / grover washington classis

gedski1200 the movie and the music gels to such a degree that would be quite impossible.
It is the THE perfect score.

We had to study this film in high school. What a privilege.
Greatest sci fi film ever made.
Brilliant footage of an amazing film in production, great footage of Syd Mead.

It was worth it - the film still looks incredible on 4K UHD disc.
I need a fresh copy and stick it on my big screen. Got three copies on DVD I probably don't need. 🤣

The parking meter placard, the car interior scene's level of detail just for a few moments on screen. This isn't entertainment, this is high art.
Each person nonchalantly describing how a masterpiece was made! BRAVO and thank you for this gem.
Blade Runner rocks
Wish I'd been to that convention. love Blade Runner
Fascinating short! And the slinky vibes lends it a deliciously incongruous 'Logan's Run' atmosphere.
Blade Runner Convention Reel: Soundtrack by Disco Stu
It's amazing all the attention to detail that goes into a film, even if it is never seen like that parking meter it might look like something is missing if it isn't in the film.
I've never seen this, seeing behind the scenes is always great! This one of my favorite films and Syd Mead is *the* sci-fi artist!
Oh lord that soundtrack
Pure 70s muzak. Only shows how futuristic Vangelis' score was/is.
Saw this as a 14-year-old at the Creation Convention in NYC. Probably more than once. What a time to be a nerd!

this is fascinating! I'm learning about details that I hadn't known about this great film!
4 years later .....Now we had Blade Runner 2049 !!!
Wow... hard to believe it's been 30 years! Damn i'm getting old.
What a difference a soundtrack makes, totally changed the atmos!
Il nous à quitté récemment et chez nous en France personne n'en parle alors que c'était un sacré visionnaire et inventeur, Rip Syd Mead.
Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite films. Seeing the convention reel with disco just seemed so wrong!
Just watched some of Syd Mead's artwork on here. What an astonishingly talented man he was...RIP.

Very happy the music for this short film was not in the real film!
LOL, the music in the beginning of the reel sounds more like 1972 than 1982!
Also, please forgive me for giving you the cinematic atrocity that is Prometheus
It's still done pretty much the same way, just the tools have changed.
