When it is about deception, i think Phaestro is the grim counterpart to Lady Vala, who in term is a simple thief, who just steals valuable items from corrupt nobels.
Yeah, how cool is that? He was seeking the treasure, and in his corruption, hallucinated his friends’ insides as riches. Really cool visual storytelling.
