I wanted a couple of non-DI units so I picked up a BRN-180 in a carbine and one shorty Boi in a couple of popular flavors. They also have slightly different approaches to detent pin assemblies and roll-pin usage... but are relatively easy to build up compared to traditional AR lowers. The Jakl wasn't available yet when I acquired my BRN180'S. The two main complaints I've heard about those are weight and spec-related issues on the top Pic rail. Good video. Interesting format.

The JAKL is the better option for the moment. I say that simply because of what PSA is capable of doing when they need to update a product line. However, the BRN180 has a Gen3 version on the way, and soon. I actually have the suspicion that the new version of the BRN will be an incredible product. And i will be finding out firsthand.
Nice to read your post. I've been sitting on a lower waiting for the new gen3 versions of the BRN-180 to come out. Have you heard anything about it, such as a 8" version or nonreciprocating charging handle?
I seriously doubt Brownells will release an integrated non-reciprocating charging handle, as the BRN-180 is a direct homage to the AR-180, in style and function, both of which had their "charging handles" directly integrating into the Bolt Carrier.
When you say "more often" are you saying in more platforms or by more professional positions? Your modus ponens is my modus tollens when it comes to platform. There just may not be as many DI "platforms" outside of the AR because the AR does it so well. And, DI is still the king when it comes to professional use, with very noteable exceptions. There has been an attempt to replace military DI M4's with some from of piston for a long time.
It is used often. It is the standard when it comes to rifles in America / other countries outside of the AK world. Yes, there are more piston platforms now, but the average rifle is a DI AR15. In fact, the UK just switched over to a KAC DI rifle just this year, from their previous piston guns. We are still yet to see whether the Sig Spear does in fact get widespread adoption, or go the route of the SCAR.

Brownells is missing out on the 308 game. If they were to make a 308 Brn180, they would be very successful. There’s a huge niche for affordable piston modern battle-rifles. We can see how successful PSA has been with Jakl-10. Someone needs to tell Brownells that 350legend was a wrong 180 caliber, we need 308.
One thing I've learned is that going from a 5.56 version to a 308 version isn't as simple as sizing up, but if the BRN-180 release goes well, I wouldn't be surprised if they start looking into it. Since PWS makes/made the uppers, I'm suspecting much of the know-how is already there.
@ oh I totally agree, it’s not just size up. But, if PSA made Jakl into 308, I don’t see how you can’t make 308version of 180. Look, even IWI Ace galil made a 308. All of these are at or sub 2000$. A grand cheaper than scar heavy.

I've owned both the brn was designed and built my pws far superior to anything coming out of palmetto. Jakl is super heavy also that being said has no buffer option not that 556 is a recoil heavy round but it is considerably more uncomfortable to operate. I currently primarily run a pws mk116 and mk111 mod2 long stroke set up with lpvo in combination with a pistol red dot adjustable flat trigger h3 buffer heavy spring and generally run it with my rex can. The total weight of my 16" build with can lights etc is less than 10.5lbs the mk111 is 9.5lb with 1x microprism and light. I never weighed my jakl but if I had to guess outfitted weight was probably 15lbs or so
PWS has a perfect grasp on making lightweight piston (long) systems. MK111 Mod 2 and MK216 are among my favorite items due to that fact alone. I'm eagerly awaiting for PSA to address some of the very valid complaints with the Jakl, mainly weight. there's no reason that they couldn't have off at least 20oz from the 13.7/14/5 Jakl.
Who was your English teacher? I would like to have a word. My goodness. Are you allergic to punctuation? Do you have any idea of the amount of brain torture you inflict? Lol
My only main gripe about PSA is their QA/QC. There are still too many current examples of that for me to want to spend my money on or rely on the Jakl.
*generic media response: Inside sources say they're aware of this and have made aggressive changes to address this issue. *what I actually know: 15 years ago, the Colt M4 I was issued shot a 3 MOA group. Every PSA I've used in the last 2 years was, at max 2 MOA, and still costs half as much. They've had improvements both from in-house and industry wide improvements.
Of PSA would stop putting carbine profile barrels (thin from chamber to gas block and fat after), and go to something like the BRN and Spear LT (a Hanson profile, consistent taper form chamber to muzzle except for the gas block journal
I think they're intending to change them. But, it's also a weird gun. The barrel could be QD, but isn't, the BCG needs a weight cut, and the charging handle smacks the receiver, denting it..
Bwahaha I used one many years ago and they were silly front-heavy back in the day. Newer models of the LWRC seemed to fix that. It might be time to revisit.
Neither are better options than an AR. I can fine tune an AR. These both leave few options. The BRN has a huge gap where dirt can enter the bolt and trigger assembly. The JAKL is made by PSA, so I don't think it will hold up for the long term and the stocks are not rigid. Both are front heavy and awkward to hold up longer than 30 seconds. The AR has far more options. It's a no-brainer.
There's a reason I did't do a straight comparison to the AR. It can get as nuanced as DI vs gas piston. But that's it's own rabbit whole. Both serve their purpose. The JAKL will likely be around for a while. The BRN-180 isn't a 1 for 1 replacement, but has its own merits.
@@thecitywentaway First, if you can outlift me, I'll buy you a fine steak dinner. Second, I didn't complain about the weight. I complained about the balance. Too much weight upfront causes balance issues.
Internet and video game culture influenced some of gun culture to look for the best weapon? That's probably the dumbest shit I've ever heard. Humans have been looking for the best weapon since humans existed. I try to give new channels a fair shot, but that's about enough for me. Looks like you set up production nicely. You're good in front of the camera. Youre talking about relevant weapons. Cut out that silly shit you opened up with and you'll do great.
Thanks for the feedback. I should have clarified, the internet and video games have impacted how much of our generation thinks of the "best weapon" in terms of stats, instead of the right tool for the right job. Go back to 2010 and read the pages and pages of AK vs AR or 9mm vs 45. Or the top searches on google, for X vs Y. or "Best Home Defense X" etc. I could have provided better context.
@redactedllc Goddamit, sadly, you're right. If I hear one more person say "best gun" I'm gonna suck start my rifle. I took you to mean that games have influenced gun culture to look for the best tool for the job, and that struck me as ridiculous for the reasons I mentioned in my snide comment. As much as I hate to admit it, mentioning video games at the start of a gun video probably foes good for traffic. There's probably a wording out there that can pull off that effect without pissing off nitpicking pricks like myself. Figuring that wording would probably pay dividends.

*generic media response:
Inside sources say they're aware of this and have made aggressive changes to address this issue.
*what I actually know: 15 years ago, the Colt M4 I was issued shot a 3 MOA group. Every PSA I've used in the last 2 years was, at max 2 MOA, and still costs half as much. They've had improvements both from in-house and industry wide improvements.
This is really weird to say but has anyone ever told you that you remind them of Gene Wilder?
That's a new one for me. I usually get Oddball in Kelly's Heroes played by donald sutherland.
Factory vs. Resale store ....iam going factory .
Whent taken apart the JAKL shows various design influences. from the GGas Piston to the charging handle location.
Wrong.. it’s the LWRC A5. It’s the best.. 🤪
You should probably hit the gym if your worried about the weight of the jakl 😅
Looks like I have a job to do.
glad I could clarify as well.
@@redactedllc Your response reminded me that there is no reason to be snide. I appreciate that. Subscribed.
