Frosty camp in the Hilleberg Akto - New Year's Day pleasure!

- There was snow in Wicklow in December and I managed to get out for a few hikes, unfortunately I couldn't camp as I had Christmas plans catching up with friends on a few nights. I was eager to camp at least once before returning to work and if possible to experience a snow camp. The weather and social plans aligned that New Years Day was a good possibility - in the run up to the date, the weather kept getting milder and the likelihood of the snow hanging around seemed to fade. I was still hopeful of a frosty camp and thankfully that worked out. As the purpose of this trip was purely to camp in snow/frost I debated on whether to go to Wicklow or the Mournes which looked like a good possibility too. I settled on Kelly's Lough in Wicklow - I was drawn there and there's no arguing when you get that sense.
When I set up my tent I bumped into Andrew Maher who was also out for the night and camping on higher ground. He has a video with amazing sunrise shots from that morning: • New year sunrise Wickl...
So...it was mission accomplished, I camped in frosty conditions and the sky was clear to allow me to fly the drone in the morning to get a peak of the sun above the lower clouds. I didn't want to film too much but I captured a bit to remember the trip and fingers crossed it will provide some entertainment to others!

Hi Miriam!!! Oh what a lovely film! Yay, no snow but you got tons of nice white frost in the end!! Beautiful. Your drone shot of the dawn was fab, and I also loved the drone shot of you and your teeny tent in that huge gorgeous landscape, wow so wonderful. And I loved the shot of you sitting on a tree stump looking just serenely happy. Oh and the scone at the end! haha so funny that scones played star roles in both our films haha. Actually it really made me smile when you said you were walking up the hill in the cold, looking forward to hot tea and biscuits, cos that is exactly how I felt too, when I was out last, in chilly weather - I was thinking oh how great I am going to be all cosy and have hot coffee and scones soon haha... It is just so nice isn't it. So simple, so nice. Thank you for the super film! Happy New Year!!
Thank you Susanna!! Ah the scones 😂😂 I did laugh when I saw yours earlier too - the simple pleasures that take a life of their own when out in the open!! I wasn’t sure if there would be a video in the amount I had recorded but the frost and visibility of the morning spurred me on to capture a bit more to remember the day! I was like a giddy child in the lovely morning conditions and then like a stoned hippy on my hike back…that feeling is very powerful and I’m pretty sure you get it too. We are also big on scones while camping in the wild. We also wrap scone dough around a stick, making sure to cover one end and then slowly toast over a fire and when done, twist off the stick and fill the centre with chocolate.

Had an Akto, Incase the weather got bad at night, would close the end vents, with the result that got alot of condenssation, would have to wipe the inner, in the morning before sitting up or get a wet head, other than that no issues. Actually one issue was that in strorms, you would get belted hard on the head by the pole when a gust hit if sitting up. It was a nice tent, quick to set up, light, very little pack space. It was destroyed though when the mum of somebody I leant it to, put it into a washing machine destroying it's waterproofing and making it smell of flowers.
Yes it definitely has its limitations! Nice to have it in my arsenal of tents but it’s not perfect. At the same time I’ll look forward to getting out in it again in the colder weather 😊 Oh my god I just saw your edited message now…oh my good god, how disastrous 😲

Oh yes I remember your video John!! Its definitely the best spot up there - I setup in cheaper real estate the two other occasions I'd camped there..this was a much nicer spot and pretty flat too. I skipped the skinny dip - only because I forgot my towel...you brave souls!! Was that on your video...I'll have to take another look 😉
I love this one. Your sheer, childlike, giddy joy at being outside is so evident! On a side note, I think you should try a shaped tarp! I think you're just the type of soul who would like being even more in touch with your surroundings. Just a thought.

Understood. Although, somehow, even the most open flat tarp, or bivy sack, or even just "cowboy camping" in a sleeping bag, still imparts that cocoon feeling to me. Heck, sometimes just putting on a warm, cozy, puffy jacket will do it for me !

Watched this one again today. Love the music and now bought a winter thermarest mattress as per yours!! I like the freedom of a Brompton to be able to jump on a bus or train without booking but enjoy my gravel bike. I would want to have a very light Brompton but 3 gears must be very limiting as I am at present using a Rolhoff hub gear with a range of 19" to almost 100".
Keep traveling and hiking Miriam you are doing a wonderful job with your videos...

As the Brompton is my only bike, I haven’t had the pleasure of travelling any other way so the three gears do me fine 😉 Having reduced my chainring to the 40T, I’m enjoying it even more now of course! Great you got yourself a winter thermarest - they really do work!! You’ll love it 😎 Hopefully I’ll be out again in a few weeks with the camera and tent if the weather, treatment and feeling well enough align! Enjoy that new mattress, catch you again!!

That’s a good word for it!! Great way to ring in the new year and being brave for wanting some snow. Camped before along time ago and watching your videos keeps me focused on achieving my goal and doing the very same and getting that sense of bliss or freedom from mother nature.

Yeah was getting a bit frustrated with telling people because they usually doubt me. Watching you just having a great time has settled me and I'm almost ready with getting my gear together and just putting my good foot first when I get on the bus. Reminds all to well of Watching sun sets and sun rise when I was just a 15 year old scout who didn't really know back then and now just weighing my time till I'm there.
Practically no one in my normal life shares my interest in camping and my family especially find it difficult to get their head around - they think I’m nuts! I know I’m happy while doing it so for that reason I keep going with it 😎 I’ve learnt to not talk about it to quite a few people as they’re not interested, but it’s great to have come across a big community on TH-cam that enjoy this kind of stuff. It’s a blessing to find something that brings contentment in this thing called life!! I hope you enjoy it, sunrises and sunsets await!!
@@MiriamKennedy I'm finding the same myself, smart comments, people blowing hot air up you no where. I have endured 25 years of the psychiatric services and people always taking the mick. I linked in with an old friend who was a scout with me and he more or less said I can show you the door but you have to walk through it. His helping with acupuncture to defeat smoking and I already have over a year without drink. Like my friend's advice has guided me I am hungry for freedom away from other smokers and people that drink. I say it's easy to quit and with my friends support I will finally be back where I belong. Your even more than an inspiration now because you have helped through a bit of troubled time which I'm so glad for and really appreciate the comments. Thank you.🙏💖💕🌈

You're insanely funny and happy even in inclement weather. I'm watching with my cuppa and toast in me warm bed and room temperature of 22 degrees!
I think part of the joy of watching picturesque Ireland from your camera and drone lenses is because of your sunny disposition, even in the cold. Who enjoys sitting out in the frost and telling us how blistful it is? Miriam Kennedy, of course! And few can walk and talk and laugh (and want to!!) on an ice bitingly cold morning!! The love of the great outdoors runs through your veins.
I've watched quite a few Youubers 'winter camping' videos, and honestly, none are as amusing and enjoyable as yours.
Bless you, my dear, your innocent childlike love of the serenity of nature and beautiful Ireland keeps me riveted. I'm tempted to send you my redundant log burner to keep you warm on your next bitterly cold 'wild camp'. 😄

Hi Cher - thank you so much for your kind message, you said such lovely things 😍 I had no idea it came across as amusing! Its nice when I feel relaxed with the camera, it can take me a while to get into the swing of it. Being honest, if the morning was dull I quite likely wouldn't have continued filming as I I'd have been so disappointed - it wouldn't have been an interesting video to make or to watch I imagine! I suppose going away with a purpose in mind creates a scenario of possibly not getting what I'd like! I'm familiar with the area so it had a different purpose than most of my other trips - thankfully it worked anyway!! The idea of a fire on long nights would definitely appeal...already the evenings are getting a little longer now though, I noticed the difference between my last 2 camps. Hopefully I'll have that bitterly cold camp in the snow at some stage although it feels like Spring is coming. Your Summer visit awaits!! I'll have to work harder on enticing you over 😎 Thanks again!!

Superb footage Miriam. Frosty mornings are fantastic to wake to! The calmness. The still air. The clear skies.
Many years ago I camped out at the top of the Devils Ladder in late November. The forecast was for a cold front to come in. It did! The temp dropped to -11 degrees C overnight. We were, back then, doing what we could to keep warm. Even the milk for breakfast froze! What an adventure that one was. One of those ones that stay with you your entire life, and smile when you think of it.
I hope waking up on that frosty morning will live long in your memories.

Thanks Alan - you know the experience well! It's very special - the stillness was quite a surprise after the blustery night and the clear sky was such a thrill. Part of me wanted to be on higher ground when I saw with the drone what was happening but at the same time I couldn't even take in all that I was seeing. The video is a great help to keep those memories alive or at least available to me should I look again. The -11 experience must have been a challenge for sure!! I had shards of ice in my water bottle but it hadn't completely frozen thankfully. Frozen boots must be yuk - I was hoping that wouldn't happen!!

@ArizonaSonoranDesertGuy oh very good, nice to hear how you came across these videos! That was so bizarre what happened to my sleeping bag on that trip - the crazy thing is that the same thing happened to Tom with a sleeping bag in his Akto also, he found his though! Gggggrrrrrr…I searched and searched but no joy, I went back the following weekend with my drone also but it was too windy to do a thorough search with the drone. I’ve searched again on another hike but still no joy. I’ve since replaced my winter sleeping bag…I survived without a sleeping bag though, not a lesson I was looking to learn, but hey a few things were learnt…try remember to shut the inner of my tent 🤭 I never found those glasses either!! I do have a particular propensity to losing sunglasses it seems…I have a string around them and I still lost them! 🤕 I even lost another pair of prescription sunglasses since that trip I’m embarrassed to admit…🫣
@@MiriamKennedy Hope you do not mind. I've been watching your older videos and have a suggestion/request for your channel.
Possibly create an expanded version of some of these older videos. Make them longer and include some of the footage and details that were initially edited out.
You could experiment with this to add voiceovers, bells, whistles, and fancy editing techniques. Your viewers and your channel get some new(ish) content (including the bloopers, things going wrong, discouragement, it's not always fun, etc.) without you having to make time, get out there, and film new stuff.
The Norwegian Xplorer channel does this: a shorter version first, then an expanded version later.
I would watch the expanded versions.

I’m possibly a little different from other people in that I delete every bit of footage after I’ve created a video - I hold on to none of it to be able to go back and make something else from it. The purpose of those earlier videos was just for my eyes only - I was trying to create a memory for myself and never envisaged any other person looking at them so that’s why there was no speaking etc. I was loading them to TH-cam just as a repository so that I could delete them from my phone but then eventually I challenged myself to speak and engage some more but I’ve always felt a bit awkward about it as it’s a million miles from the true essence of my solo trips. I take the camera with me so rarely as I feel I pay a price in doing that - yet it has some wonderful payoffs of course too! After some lovely trips in recent months I feel ready to try do another video if I can get a decent weather window in the next few weeks though!🤞 I appreciate your encouragement though, believe me I have plenty of doubts about it all a lot of the time 😊

Exactly - when the weather plays ball! If the rain and wind were still there in the morning, I don’t think the drone would have been coming out to play and I’d have been pretty disgruntled…only as I was hoping for snow or frost! It can be a bleak spot with the wrong head on your shoulders!! Hope 2023 is a good one for you Chris 😊
Nice to see you channel finally getting the recognition it so richly deserves and what a stunning way to start the video. My New Years Day was spent getting over a hangover and we are forecasted a lot more snow in the New Year, so you may yet get your wish. Kelly's Lough looked very picturesque but also a bit wet and blustery too but no matter for what you got the next morning what an amazing and although you did not get the snow, looked like you had a real frosty morning. Always nice to bump into a fellow TH-camr and good to hear you had a good night as well as a good morning. Must admit when you were crossing that little river I thought: 'Here comes the first blooper of the New Year' but over like a pro! I have only ever done two wild camps before but my NYs resolution is to do more this year and already got one planned with a fellow TH-camr (in the warm weather) and that looked a very well deserved cream tea😋. Thanks for your reply for years I suffered with mental health issues but now I'm almost recovered and the wicklow mountains will heal the last of my work on this journey. I'll be out there map and compass and enjoying mother nature.

Good on you winter camping! We spent NYD at Nairn and Portnoo, it was as busy as a summer day. My daughter reneged out of her planned swim, which got me off the hook thankfully. Hope you have a great year and keep the vids coming.
Glad you got off the hook from a New Years swim - that sounds positively baltic! Thankfully my gear kept me toasty warm and the morning more than made up for a long night in the tent. The night flew by in fairness…a long number of hours resting the body was probably a good thing for the system too!! Hope Nairn and Portnoo were enjoyable - I’m not familiar with those areas at all. Hi Dick - yes the long nights are the challenge alright, would you believe the little stretch in the evening is noticeable already! I was thinking it would be dark by 4:30 but there was light until 5pm, that half hour becomes such a treat!! I totally enjoy the novelty of the long nights every now and again. I can't get out yet as I fell on the ice coming down off Camaderry S.E Top before Xmas and bruised my ribs, I have recently received my new Durston X-Mid 2 tent so I'm itching to get out in it! Happy new year Miriam, well you might not have got the snow you were hoping for,but that sharp frost gave you the winter scene . Lovely drone shots in the morning just beautiful and no wind in the morning was a bonus. I find using another peg on its side to pull other pegs out via the peg loop if they are well stuck in 👍 great 1st camp of the year atb Dave ⛺️👍
The stillness the next morning was almost eerie Dave - after a blustery night the wind died away so suddenly. I was so glad the mist had lifted and that I wasn’t left under cloud…I would have had a whole lot of summit envy going on!! Thanks for the tip on using another peg…I had actually tackled the other side of the tent first and they were harder to lift, then I got the idea to film it on the other side…they were a lot easier on that side though. Im terrified to stumble upon wild life if i were to camp in the wilderness, when i take my tent out, i do it in a fenced garden in a suburb.. but this sure looks peaceful and mindfulness all about it
Hi there - in Ireland we have no wildlife that we need to be scared of. I only come across deer and sheep, so for that reason it’s a lot easier than many countries. I’m sure you get a similar experience no matter where you set your tent up, as long as it’s quiet anyway! I’m not sure whether the wildlife around you is a true threat but of course you need to be wise and balance the risks accordingly. For me, the only risk I feel I need to be concerned about is that I fall and injure myself - I can’t let that fear stop me though from ever going out, it’s too enjoyable to give into that fear. Maybe there are wild places near you that wildlife won’t be a real threat, at the same time, you don’t want to be out in a tent and feeling terrified! Best of luck with it and I hope you enjoy your camping wherever you do it, it doesn’t matter if it’s suburban and fenced in 😉

I was chuffed to see it the next morning - the change in the weather and conditions really made the trip. I don’t think I would have bothered filming the next day if it hadn’t changed. I think the sense of peace is from microdosing yourself on a healthy molecular level .
Some may scoff and call the idea "fringe". However, for those who hike and camp, that peace and calm is a tangible effect that seems to arrive out of thin air .

Nicely put…yep I certainly can’t put words on describing the feeling that arrives and it’s always been especially evident on the morning walk after a camp. The solitude, peace and exhilaration of it all is soooooo powerful. A nice pleasure to have found 😉

Hi Miriam. Lovely video. On the strength of one of your earlier videos, I camped at Kelly's Lough back in late Aug 2022, right by the stream outflow that you step over and said was too boggy. Different conditions in Aug, I guess. Great spot, but I think that little spot in this video that you found just up from the stream outflow is even better. I'll keep an eye out for it. Haven't managed to get out since late October, but I did a winter wild camp(s) last Feb and got a bit of frost on the tent. Different ball game!! For the frying oil, there's a spray-on version that you can push down on the cap and out pops a blast of frying oil, no more frozen lumps to wedge out of the bottle!!!😀 Anyway, hope 2023 is good to you. I quite liked the thrill of the frozen oil to be honest 😊 I think I originally camped a bit further back from the spot that you camped - the spot you mentioned near the stream wasn't too bad this time and I nearly went for it but had a quick look further up and spotted this latest one...much happier with it, it wasn't boggy and it was pretty flat. I think I chose my original spot as I had a clear view of the water from inside the tent..and you likely did from that spot near the stream too. This new one doesn't..ho hum!! Yep frost on the tent is great isn't it...what are we like!! 😀 Wishing you well for 2023 too Wadirunner!
Super! Thank you. Nearly made me sorry I live in Austria now. But not quite! Used to wild camp throughout North Wales, the Lake District and a bit in Scotland before I moved here where wild camping is illegal. Usually ski in the winter but snow a bit sparse so far this season. Normal bike touring (easier than walking for an old man) spring summer and autumn using campsites. Thoroughly enjoy your videos along with those from Susanna Thornton. Once again thank you, and keep them coming please.
I must try harder to make you feel sorry for living in lovely Austria!! I didn’t realise Wild Camping was completely illegal in Austria - is it really enforced? Sounds like you have a lovely setup with your bike touring and campsites - no doubt the campsite setup in Austria is a lot more attractive than ours anyway. @@MiriamKennedy I think if you take "stealth camping" very seriously you could probably get away with it (think military, with no stove, lights etc). Penalties for wild camping in Nature Reserves, National Parks or National Forests can be quite severe, if you're caught. Fines of up to €14,500, in other places fines between €5 and €500 and possibly have your tent confiscated as well. Bivouacking seems to be accepted, but that is without a tent, for one night only. You could claim to be too tired to continue with your journey, but might still get moved on. I like to cook an evening meal and breakfast so it is better for me on a campsite. My limited recent experience of UK campsites (Pembrokeshire coast for 3 nights last May) is that Austrian campsites have more and better facilities for about the same price.
My big worry with it is having to appear in a court which could affect my status as an Artikel 50 permanent resident and maybe get removed back to UK.

Thank you!! While I was standing around with the drone I noticed (momentarily) that my toes felt a bit cold but I don’t remember it lingering or me being that bothered by it. The adrenalin possibly helped in keeping away a sense of being cold 😉 I think it was about -3 but lots of layers when I was outside and adrenalin did the trick! I know I’m very lucky to have such quiet places to visit. This trip was even a bit different in that I met 2 different people up at the lake that first afternoon, usually I meet no one! @@MiriamKennedy My NYD video wasn't as good as last year's when we got a really good sunrise. I've seen some sleeping bag liners claim it adds 18C lol, realistically I would say it adds 5C. I would say mine makes my 3 season bag a 4 season sleeping bag.
Yours sounds good! I use mine with a 4 season bag, but even at that I’m not sure I’d rate my Rab Neutrino 600 as high as Rab rate it. I’m possibly a cold sleeper but the sleeping and liner work a treat for me 😊

Well nice to hear other people feel that feeling too - not that it matters if no one else feels it, but Jesus it’s so nice. Glad the walkie talkie went down ok, I had a moment of ‘what am I doing and what am I talking about’…The snowy camp awaits, hopefully I’ll be free when we have another fall this season to try it out!! Fabulous video Miriam. It's a few years since I wild camped at Kelly's Lough & now you have me dying to head back there. My friend Gavin & I spent New Years doing a loop walk of the hills over looking Gouganebarra & trust me when I say you haven't seen soggy ground like up there. It would be like sleeping on a waterbed if you tried to pitch a tent there. Where did you buy your tent as there seams to be very few stores selling them in Ireland? Well done again with the video & Happy New Year to you & yours. Keep up the good work.
Oh Ger you’ve painted a soggy picture alright!! I had planned to walk the hills overlooking Gouganebarra last Summer but never quite made it. Soggy as it was for you, I’m sure it was still a treat…well hopefully anyway!! When I bought my Akto there were real shortages across Europe and I bought mine from the site - tentes 4 saisons. I’m not sure what supply is like at the moment but they are typically hard to come across in the winter months but hopefully supply is good again. I hope you get back to Kelly’s Lough again by the way!! 😎 Thanks for your lovely message and wishing you well for 2023 too!

@@MiriamKennedy What aaaaahh😄, it's horrible, because in the winter of 1980 I was in the army officer school, we were in the forest for 3 months and sometimes we ate frozen food. It gave me an eternal trauma towards skiing😄
