Speaking of June, in her defense, she was getting on in years. And much as I adore her and her voice work, even *I'll* admit it can get irritating using the same voices over and over again. In short, she doesn't sound depressed just to appease the script, but because while she's giving it her all, she *was* roughly in her early 90's-late 80's at the time.
@@cliffordshafran9250 Yeah replacing her with Tara Strong was a smart choice. She actually rivals June in terms of acting. To too bad Ben Distkin is miscast as Boris????
This is one of my favorite movies due to the fact that it's a perfect recreation of one of my favorite TV shows. It's intentionally bad, just like the show. That's the gag. It's camp. Good camp, at that. It knows when it's terrible and it revels in it. Heck, even the pointless cameos are a nod to the show. Everything in it is perfect. But then, I'm just a pathetic fanboy for purposefully bad jokes and groan-inducing puns. Give me a character who takes sick delight in torturing the audience with awful gags and I'm in love immediately.
Actually, what I meant to say is that some films aren't meant to be motion pictures, even if adapted perfectly. Take that Ratchet & Clank film for example. Even though it arguably is the best straight video game adaptation out there, it fails to appeal to a mainstream audience. Still, if you're a Ratchet fan, you'd likely find enjoyment in the film.

Amazing review Doug (as usual). But you missed something. There is ONE adaptation that's more true to its original source material than ANY other adaptation. It's called The Peanuts Movie.
is not really a problem but a hidden joke, by that time people was thinking Internet was killing traditional cartoons, but also turns out everything in the internet pretty much will live forever
From Wikipedia: "Fearless Leader is informed of Rocky and Bullwinkle's return and sends Boris and Natasha to destroy them. The two take a laptop with them called the CDI (standing for Computer Degenerating Imagery) which can specifically send animated cartoon characters to the Internet forever."
This is honestly my favorite live action movie based on a cartoon for many reasons. Yes, it's genuinely funny and the 4th wall jokes are very clever at times, but for me, why I love it was because it was a faithful and respectful adaptation of the original cartoon. There was only one "hip-hop" joke and it had a purpose with Bullwinkle being convinced it's not the 60s anymore and foreshadows his antlers reflecting off electricity at the ending. See, purpose. They did things that fit within their personality and character from the show and they don't talk potty humor or have a single fart joke. The characters designs are 100% accurate designs from the show that had a reason why they don't look like photorealistic animals because they're already cell-shaded cartoons, especially now, they have to make the characters have real fur or semi-realistic body proportions and they could've easily had done that, but they went the extra mile to match the art style of the original series to a tea. And they went as far as getting the voice actor from the original cartoon, and the live action characters being celebrities makes sense when you know they've manifested into what Hollywood would've done to them in live-action. Because "They were attached to the project." But, I also felt the movie's message is honestly pretty deep. The main character is someone who adored the original cartoon since she was a kid a had looked up to them, but once she became an adult, everyone made her reject her childhood and make her a hard-nose, cold and determined person when she's actually a sweet person who's made to have _care and sympathy_ (get it?) But once she actually meets Rocky and Bullwinkle in person, that inner child is slowly coming out until she learns to keep in touch with her youthful self. I think we all relate to that because we all have that cartoon we love and we don't wanna grow up, but the world makes you put away childhood things by growing up. And there's nothing wrong with being who you are and what you like, personally and it's okay to keep in touch to your own inner child, no matter how old you are. And this was made in 2000, way before TH-cam comments had people say "I remember this cartoon. So much better than the crap today." I feel like this movie was ahead of it's time with that message that had it come out today, it probably could've been a more respected movie, not because it's funny and faithful, but because of it's message it was trying to tell.
honestly, this movie is proof that if you have a director and team who actually care about the source material it can turn out amazing! But sadly most directors want to mold the story to their expectations instead of looking at the source and make it just as lovable as the source. like have you seen what Hollywood did to hansel and Gretel? Alice in wonderland? THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN (the black cauldron is by far the worst book adaptation ever... please read the books and you will see why...) they corrupted amazing tales that if done right could have been enjoyable! Roky and Bowinkle did it right by using the source material and keeping the characters in character, they kept what people loved about the show and they made it so cheesy it was like actually watching the cartoon but with real people!
All fair points, but in the Black Cauldron's defense, you can't deny that the Horned King is the only redeeming element of the film. The kickass design, the imposing atmosphere he creates whenever he's on screen. Oh, and being voiced by the great John Hurt doesn't hurt (pun not intended) much either.
I liked Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Besides, it IS a story that has been told a thousand different ways over the years, so making them adults wasn't really that bad. Alice in Wonderland I agree with, though. And Jesus Christ, what they've done to just about every Dr Seuss story ever.
I remember seeing a mini interview for that new Woody Woodpecker film and all the staff could talk about was the laugh, and that was the most important part to them instead of, you know, honoring the source material. Now I start to see why so many of these things suck
I tried to enjoy it, but the historical inaccuracies took me out of it. I mean, Mozart and Antonio Salieri were friends, the death and lifestyle didn't fit history. I get that you sometimes have to suspend your disbelief, but that was too much for me.
I liked it. I think this was a proper way to represent and reflect his feelings about how he disagreed with the hate towards it. I can tell by looking at the clips of this film why someone would hate it. It feels like it's another movie having the characteristics of a really absurd bad comedy movie. Though I think he felt like it suited the cartoon was originally. This is just his opinion though. It was bound for him to at some point disagree with the masses with how they felt about it. Everyone, including you and me, will at some point disagree with how others view a movie.
Katie Yes it was. It defiantly has the notes of Amadeus, but the tone is defiantly comical in nature. It's clever since, like many, he likes Amadeus. He even did a video titled, "How True is Amadeus?". Enjoy the review.
20:08 That statement Doug said just made my point of me doing videos as for voicing my plush characters, doing the cameraman part myself, editing the videos, editing my website, doing the social media part, uploading and all aka etc.
Nope, because in their source material they were all 2D art styles. Also the movie itself even questions why Rocky and Bullwinkle are CGI but Boris, Natasha, and Fearless Leader are real people. I always just assumed it's because Rocky and Bullwinkle are anthropomorphic animals so they have to be CGI while making the villains CGI when they're human anyway it's easier to just hire actors that look the part rather than animating them.
Even though if the muppets broke the fourth wall and said, "I don't know how many more fourth walls we can break!" If anybody remembers Deadpool, he broke sixteen walls! Also, "SHUT UP, THIS IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!!" - Fearless Leader
If you don't mind a show about stupid gags and no budget, then it's delightful. Though to be fair, the show did feature some long-running story arcs. Each episode was only like five minutes long, and almost every one ended in a cliffhanger of some sort.
This had a lot of great moments (the line about the movie being charming was especially cute) but honestly thanks for the "Critic as crazy needing-looking-after friend" episodes. They're insane but I relate and it's nice to.
after I watch this review, I went to watch Amadeus (which has been on my waiting list). It was amazing. And now I watch this review again and get the reference hahaha

I would love to see nostalgia critic review the ben 10 movies.I saw one of them and it wasn't half bad.I just want to see what NC thinks.
Hands down, Doug portrayed over-the-top act of Murray Abraham perfectly.
Damnit! It _was_ Amadeus, wasn't it? I was trying to figure out if it was supposed to be The Exorcist or Exorcist III, and I was wwaaayyy damned off!
Though true, it seemed to me like Critic was talking mainly about how much complaining Rocky does.
She just didn't have the energy she had in the cartoon. But, that's just due to old age. I'm still glad they used her to voice Rocky again.
June Foray was 82/83 in 2000 (the year Rocky and Bullwinkle was released)
@@cliffordshafran9250 Yeah replacing her with Tara Strong was a smart choice. She actually rivals June in terms of acting. To too bad Ben Distkin is miscast as Boris????
Perfectly understandable.
I'll gonna miss you June Foray. Rest In Peace you brilliant actress...
She didn't even turn 100. I know Don Kennedy (Tansit's voice actor on Space Ghost Coast to Coast) is 100 and is still living.

To be fair
That John Goodman cameo was actually pretty freaking funny. I dunno, I just love his delivery on that line.
CasaiAgicap Well, to be fair, it's John Goodman. The dude's fucking awesome.
I hear ya'
It just goes to show you that not everything is suitable for a film adaptation. Video games being a choice example of course.
E-ManAnimates
But the video is all about how Rocky and Bullwinkle was a perfect film adaptation.
Fun Fact: The writer for this movie wrote and directed Manchester by the Sea.
"Yeah and I'm really John Goodman" that line kills me every time

If we break another fourth wall the whole house is gonna come down.
We'll let the universe out if we leave each house with three walls.
And 1 year later the movie wreck it Ralph 2 came out. The trailer broke so many walls that i had to use math. See the original trailer for it and scroll down until you see my name. It is actually a highlighted reply. If you don’t wanna look here is the comment. “Well each 4 wall break happens when they make fun of themselves for each princess+Star Wars+muppet+marvel+Disney+Pixar that a total of : let’s see 14 Disney princesses so 14*4=56+4 for each other 4 wall joke=56*(10*4)=56+40= 96. If you want to use Deadpool’s formula which is 4th wall to the 4th power which translates for the movie 14^4+10^4= 38416+10000=48416!
I love that you tied those terrible old Rocky and Bullwinkle Taco Bell commercials into this.
Right the joke at 16:08
After the taco bell commercial, LMAO.
I hope the same people who did the new Sherman and Peabody film follow-up with their Rocky and Bullwinkle short and make a full movie. Sherman/Peabody was a million times better than it deserved to be, and I'd love a new, good Rocky/Bullwinkle reboot.
yeah, i agree.
It was pretty good but it didn't do well in the box office and I believe the animated series on Netflix has 3 stars (but it's been awhile since I last checked so maybe it gained some).
It would be risky to give Rocky and Bullwinkle a try but they would do a good job I believe.
Prob because the world wasn't demanding a Peabody and Sherman movie
Poever then they will pay.
Netflix stars are too inconsistent to judge it on since it changes every hour.

@@michaelgrand346 SILENCE! YES IT IS!
This is probably one of the best reviews ever by NC.
Weird. I honestly enjoyed the movie when I first watched it. I mean its nothing that I would praise from heaven to earth about but it was fun.
Seriously, no comment about the thing that kills cartoons is called the CDI? Like, as in Hotel Mario?
Only problem is while Bullwinkle is surfing through the internet, the weasel shows up again completely unharmed!
is not really a problem but a hidden joke, by that time people was thinking Internet was killing traditional cartoons, but also turns out everything in the internet pretty much will live forever
From Wikipedia:
"Fearless Leader is informed of Rocky and Bullwinkle's return and sends Boris and Natasha to destroy them. The two take a laptop with them called the CDI (standing for Computer Degenerating Imagery) which can specifically send animated cartoon characters to the Internet forever."
So, Internet Killed the cartoon star?
I just wonder what Ganon's up to!
Because "They were attached to the project."
But, I also felt the movie's message is honestly pretty deep. So much better than the crap today." I feel like this movie was ahead of it's time with that message that had it come out today, it probably could've been a more respected movie, not because it's funny and faithful, but because of it's message it was trying to tell.
a movie with bad puns?
does chuggaaconroy make a cameo in this?
Nop because this movie have good puns also ;)
You're a fan of one of my favorite LPers?????
fan?
he's my favorite LPer. I've been watching him since his Majora's Mask LP
jrpludacrous I love you even more now!
i didn't expect to see this here
honestly, this movie is proof that if you have a director and team who actually care about the source material it can turn out amazing!
Yeah this was a pretty fun movie to watch.
I liked Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Besides, it IS a story that has been told a thousand different ways over the years, so making them adults wasn't really that bad. Alice in Wonderland I agree with, though. And Jesus Christ, what they've done to just about every Dr Seuss story ever.
allison sharkey g
I remember seeing a mini interview for that new Woody Woodpecker film and all the staff could talk about was the laugh, and that was the most important part to them instead of, you know, honoring the source material. Now I start to see why so many of these things suck
Was this.... an Amadeus style review
It was! Amadeus is amazing!
Channel Awesome The real question is... are you Doug, tamera, Malcom, the list dude, or one of the interns

One thing I question, why do some of the cartoon characters look 2D, some look CG and some of them come out in live-action?
i assume because they're different art styles in their "source material" which i find is pretty cool if that was the intent
RialVestro fair enough
