"Amma Oru Kolai Seithal" by Ambai. Surprise goosebumps when he said that. One of my favorite short stories growing up. Good to know there's another man. Thanks BR for this wonderful interview.
I have always enjoyed listening to Vasanth sir’s interviews - to be honest I like his movies much more than KB’s. With KB’s, I felt the portrayal of women was explicit and thrust upon your face - women would do things which were atypical in KB’s but in Vasanth’s movies, you can see these women in your day to day life. Always have loved his simplistic story telling - fan of his voice overs as well.
Conversations with Vasanth are always a pleasure. பேசுவது இயல்பாக இருக்கும், நேரம் போவதே தெரியாது, கேட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கலாம். Had a chance to see Sivaranjaniyum.. at Bangalore Film Festival 2019. While all his movies are good, I feel that Rhythm can be considered as his best work and is enough for his lifetime. Ditto for Meena too, who lived the character. Hope he will do more and more films. Thank you FC for this.
As much as I love Rhythm (and other Vasanth films like KK), I find the angle of "I'm not safe as a single woman and need a man to protect me" problematic. I wish Vasanth just left it at Chitra wanting to be with Karthi simply because she liked him and because of the shared trauma (and of course her kid adored him). I think nothing would've been lost if that sequence of her neighbor trying to misbehave with her had been removed. Wish BR had brought this up.
I also felt the adoption as very problematic in that film. Why can't the child be her biological one? I know it's a old film but I felt little odd that Vasanth didn't want to take some risks.
I agree but I also find the temple priest advising Chitra to remarry quite fascinating - Brahmin widows usually can't do that. Also, the son was an adopted one is a perfect fit because all three members of this new family have a second chance at family life. This is both Chitra and Karthi's second marriages, and it is also the boy's new set of parents. It all fits.
What I liked about this element of the film is that the harassing neighbor is cited as ‘a’ reason, not ‘the’ reason. Even after the priest conversation, Meena doesn’t instantly call Arjun. It is only after the bicycle episode (where the kid doesn’t want anyone else to teach him how to ride a cycle) that Meena decides that she will speak to Arjun.
Saw shivarajaniyum sela pengalum movie. Hats off to u vasanth sir. As u rightly mentioned tis movie is relevant for any generation irrespective of 3 different years mentioned in the movie
Vasanth ji is pearl in the "sea of humanity in cinema", below my thoughts: 1. Like Mani sir told you, would have been great if you added one male victim story. Nevertheless please make one anthology in it. 🙂 2. Live characters and character study like satyajit ray in your movie is seen which is unique and great. But request genre / fiction based movie like aasai which I feel is your best work so far 👍
i found "rhythm" movie to be regressive.. as much as it tries to sound progressive about re-marriage, it has the standard tamil cinema trope, that the heroine should be "pristine" and "pure" for the hero... even if she is a widow, the husband is conveniently killed off before their marriage is consummated... keladi kanmani and sivaranjani movie were gems, and rightly deserve to be celebrated..
I fully agree with Mr.Anand's views. I always mention this to my peers when we discuss this movie. BR, what is the role of a sound engineer. Your mic was pathetic. Could not hear many of your questions. It has become a Bane these days. The sound department needs some immediate attention. Kindly address. Good luck.
One of those people, you could just keep listening to on and on.

Nothings problematic it's the truth of Indian society women need men, men need women
