- After hauling corn for a few days, the Sukup 20,000 bushel grain bin is empty! We decided we'll clean both bins out in one go, so I kept right on hauling out of the Sioux bin.

How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a TH-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
If you want a better reading on the gauges only set the tractor or trailer brakes. If they are both set you are compressing the bags and won't get a spot on reading on them.

Ryan set you're trailer brakes only when loading the front hopper. I'm going off memory but my old Freightliner was 58 on front hopper an than when loaded it was 68 at 80,000. You're trailer beings it's Wilson should be 66-67 for 80,000= 34,000 on trailer axles... Take this for what it's worth when shifting I noticed you are hitting the fuel peddle hard on the shifts cause I could hear it hit hard in the transmission ease into so you don't have such a hard shock load on the drive line things will last longer even though you have the M11 in the truck them super 10's aren't a very tuff trany

When loading when you burn fuel off your tractor gauge will be a lil lighter to so you will have to load it a lil heavier. I been hauling grain now a yr an a half an my gauge reading is still hit an miss for the tractor
You should grease the trailer unloading tracks they’ll open a little easier
Corn dust and dirt stick to the grease and can make things worse. I've had better luck wire wheeling the tracks, then applied a thin layer of graphite while working it in by opening and closing the traps several times. That was on the old Merrit. My Wilson, on the other hand, opens super easy. My only problem is the straps are stiff from being caked with mud. I know Ryan has replaced the rollers. I read on AGTAlk about a stainless steel insert to attach to the doors tracks. I wonder if the track is worn enough to warrant repair?

scale limit? Sounded like the scale might top out at 75,400. Might be that you are just giving away extra grain?

You should get you one of those electric impact wrenches and do away with that manual cranking
Lazynub was about to say the same thing. A 1/2” drive Milwaukee or Dewalt would have no prob.
It takes a lot of torque to move those doors, most of the cordless tools won't do it. I use them a lot and they are nice tools but not for this use. Plus you really don't want the open brushes and sparks around the dust from a grain bin. Bad things happen fast.
I was thinking the same thing I don't think them cordless impact wrenches will have enough torque to open them doors but I would definitely check in to put motors on them that would do it and then all you do is flick a switch
Ernest Dougherty these new cordless 1/2” impacts run all the way up to 1100 foot pounds for Milwaukee
That is the instant torque rating, when the hammer first hits and not constant torque. Great to break loose bolts and tighten them but a constant strain kills them real quick.
great video Ryan. You are pretty smooth now on the shifting. You can't beat the fuller transmission. I drove for a lot of years with that transmission.

Looks like those hopper doors are giving you a tough time! I had the same problem and replaced the bearings the door slides on. Might be worth giving a shot!
Probably shot & he was using the direct drive.. Not the easy crank
If he carries fertilizer in them, then bearings don't seem to last.
Don't forget to hold your breath when you're crossing the big bridge.

Thats not too bad actually considering it will save on brake wear and the safety factor of having that extra stopping power. Obviously thats a later down the road thing though. Have a good one!
Get a 1/2” inpact to open those doors, it would be so much quicker

I know I am going to catch all sort of HE double toothpicks for saying this but I love the Super 10 in our Volvo. I know I know but I am old and I love it. And Ryan you will never stop learning, you have come as many have said a long way!!! you can add a Jake brake to that truck it cost around 2 thousand to put it in depends on engine type.
You are doing a GREAT JOB trucking man, if you can back that trailer in there without pulling forward and then back a couple of time, you can DRIVE TRUCK
Years if of backing up farm equipment helps. After that he only has to get used to the length of the trailer.

It’s a super 10 Eaton, the traps need to be rebuilt for sure!
I drove a super 10 at Werner Enterprises. Loved it from 1998-2002.
I did the cross country driving thing for a year, the most valuable trick I learned was to not let the RPM's get to high before changing gears. Hope this helps.
If you turn on your engine fan while going down the hill it will help slow you down. just a tip from 30 years of driving.

Very good video Ryan you're getting better at driving the truck only thing I see is you need to ease up on that gas pedal when shifting it's gone and to shifting hard he's up on the gas pedal when you go to ship and it won't do that and I would definitely see about putting motors on them doors to open them Benz the Krakens crazy once again another good video stay safe man and I hope it dries out soon
You need the electric gate opener for that trailer. It will save your back in the long run.
Very nice feature-length video, Ryan. Thanks for taking us with you through the whole process. Think back a year or two ago and how your grain was handled at that time. Look how much it has changed! Six short (well, *winter* ) months, and now Big Red is fully operational and serving your needs. One silly question: if the tractor lacks a Jake brake, what do you do in an emergency stopping situation? Nice job, man.
I'm not a truck driver but I'll take a shot at it.
Option 1: Downshift
Option 2: Press brake pedal.
Option 3: Jump out.
@@jbbuzzable All good things to do until you get to Option 3.
Most of the time the response will be, STAB the brakes, downshift, STAB the brakes again. Repeat until stopped. If it's more of a "I have to stop or run over a bus load of kids", Take it off the road toward a ditch/guide rail/barrier or similar and pop the emergency brake. These would be the same with a Jake, the Jake just gives you a way to control rolling speed without needing to ride the brakes.

You definitely need to invest in some lube for those doors! Great job sir! You should be able to run 80,000 unless theres a difference in weight limits up there. I can definitely see leaving a little leeway, but I'd run it on up to 78,000 to 79000. make the most of every trip!

It was my mother’s job to climb up into the silo and break the clog up. I’m not sure if grandma knew grandpa was sending her in there, but farm life in 1940’s rural America was about getting the job done. I think grandpa’s heart was bad and this was when their hired farm hands were off fighting WW2. Mom said it was scary to feel the grain move under her feet while simultaneously struggling to keep from being buried.

Super 10 lightning, not my favorite transmission. You would cuss at it after driving a 13 or 18 speed. With my 05 Pete and 09 Wilson normally I could load it within 500lbs of 80,000 every time watching the gauges. Lots and lots of practice. I'm kinda glad I dont drive anymore. Have you noticed a big savings in owning your own truck vs having it custom hauled? I know I could never make any money hauling grain everyday.
I don’t know about there but not in most states! It saves on your tarp the less you roll n unroll! Just wondering you should check on that!

Question Can I store Soybeans, Peanuts/Ground nuts or Regular beans (pinto, black, grean... etc) in these bins? Or they are only for corn/maize?...Please help!!!.
I drive an old Ford bucket truck with air brakes for a friend because he can't find anyone willing to even be a grunt for $250 a day much less try and learn anything. I love driving this top heavy worn out synchros hit my head on the ceiling bare bones machine especially for $175 for an hour of my time. So sad that I can't even give away tools to young people today, at least not where I currently live. Great job BTW and I'm glad your channel found me.
Hey Ryan if you can take this for what it's worth or what have you the next time you all look corn or even showing beans I'm not sure how your egg weights are out there in Wisconsin but Illinois Iowa and Nebraska and Kansas all run at 85000 on an 80,000 lb GVW I've been Trucking for 30 years I hauled AG products plus I've hauled other things but like I said take it for what it's worth I hope this helps you and you can contact me anytime and I'll give you my private email if you ever needed and we can always talk guys can get a hold of me anytime have a safe day

It's strange that I dont see to many tri axle trailers over there..for that length of trailer here would never see tandem axels
It's the same here anything over 20t is tri-axle but the they are all rear unload not like the set up on Ryan's or most I have seen in videos from the States which I dare say limits the room for a third axle
@@SlipShodBob my tri axle has a rear dump compartment..but there are a lot of tri axle trailers here that have 3 center dumps

Wondering why only 75,000 lbs gross weight when you can haul 80,000 gross? Are there different laws in Wisconsin
There are different laws in every state. In Wisconsin, the max weight varies by the commodity being hauled. Here's a link to a table showing state-by-state gross vehicle weights: ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/policy/rpt_congress/truck_sw_laws/app_b.htm
You want to give yourself a little wiggle room, 5K is a bit much but he said he's been trying to load more in, just doesn't seem like much more.

Why is your weight limit so low? Right here in the Netherlands we’re allowed to be 50.000 kilograms (around 110.000 pounds).

Hey Ryan, would it be worth putting a permanent marker line at the corn level when loaded, going to then unload and then have a rough idea that that line is x weight? Might help you reach your 77 goal and you’ll know if your putting more in. Just a thought.

That wouldn’t necessarily work because depending on the moisture the corn will have a different weight but it is a good idea. It might help just so he has a general idea though
It all depends on test weight and moisture. No two loads are the same.
Jeff Gixer yes but as Jasper Staats said it may give Ryan a bit more of an idea when he’s trying to gauge whether he’s putting more in or not. I never meant for it to be an absolute but more of a reference point

Don’t set brakes on truck and trailer when loading by air gauges. Use one or the other, using both together will make gauges inaccurate

You are lucky in a way Ryan to start out with the "super 10" as your first transmission. Having started on the standard 9, 10 and 13 speed patterns i absolutely hated the super 10 when i had to drive the one we had in the fleet. It was tough to make the change. Your getting pretty good!
Re driving Big Red: When did you get your CDL? Was it hard? What did you have to do? Was there a test on air brake systems? Was it just a written test or did you have a road test too?
Ryan, maybe you could add a bit of grease or something to those grain doors on the bottom of the trailer? It looks like they are very hard to open and close.

If you haul to the Gavilon in warren IL they will dump your trailer for you. After working on the Dubuque location i never noticed they don't do the same. Wonder why?

Yeah our ethanol plant doesn't like drivers out of the trucks. It's a safety thing. They really love the trucks with power tarps and doors.
