- In this session the aim was to do some deadbaiting on the canal for pike. We've had some cold weather and snow recently, so we figured the fish would be quite lethargic. There's probably only 3 or 4 weeks left before the pike spawn, so trying for the big girls is definitely on the to do list at the moment. The fishing was slow, but for the short time I fished for I had some great action including my biggest fish on 2023 so far! Also I tell you guys about a big announcement!

Nice comment regarding gut hooked pike! They will often just set the hook themselves on a spoon or lure that is being actively fished, but when you bait fish, you are very right especially there! Set the hook right away!
I did find a lure that, even when trolled, the pike took it quite deep. It was by Storm and was a 3” soft perch pattern. It has one large hook in the body. I fished that barbless, regardless that they could have barbs where I live, and it was still taken deep, no matter how fast I trolled it. Not gut hooked , but it would get into the gills. It was a deadly lure, in many ways, but I stopped using it. I increased to 4” but same problems. I was paying close attention and often it was just a quite hit and the fish were on. We don’t have quite as many big pike like you do and our rivers are quite different here in Alberta Canada, so we can’t fish right across the river,,, generally,,, ha ha. I primarily lake fish for northern pike vs river fishing. I often just troll so I can cover more water. The numbers on pike here are so far down that most lakes & rivers have a zero keep limit on them!! Never thought I would ever see that happen in my lifetime. I’m double your age so enjoy that fishing while you can and I hope you never run into the issues that have appeared here.

I'm a pike angler who's in his sixties who has been pike fishing since i was about 12, i have around 100 'twenties' under my belt... I praise you enormously for striking straight away and avoiding deep hooked fish.

Just for conversation, in the mid 60s when I started fishing the "experts " advice was the pike picked up the bait you let it swim away until it stopped to turn the bait so it was head first then as it moved away you set the hook, I prefer your method. And congratulations to you and mum on the birth of the baby.

I can remember that the old way when deadbaiting was to allow the pike to run with the bait and then when it stopped ( to turn the fish around to swallow) you were supposed to give it a couple of seconds and strike then. Obviously not so good for the fish, but maybe more were for the table then 🤔 Congratulations on your new addition 🎉I hope that they're both good to come home soon.

I think there are two different schools of piking.... I was always taught that some pike wont always immediately swallow a deadbait. Especially if the bait is particularly a large one. They pick it up, swim with it and attempt to rotate it so they can swallow it easier.
Ive had pike pick up a bait, swim with it a while then drop it and never touch it again. Either it felt the hooks or maybe there was something more tastier floating by that they couldnt miss.
In any case, Id rather lose a fish then having to deal with an issue of deep hooking. Less stress for everybody.
Fishing Season finished 3 days ago 15/3/2023 as I write. Congratulations on the newborn Chris. Your time Is going to be quite tight for the next month or so. So bring on the 16th of June, so We can get out there again. Thanks for sharing.
