Unlike many of the other internet TV boxes, the Apple TV is different in that it doesn't allow for the traditional VPN configuration. So how can you setup a VPN on an Apple TV?
What you really need in this case isn't a VPN (Virtual Private Network), you need SmartDNS. You're not trying to encrypt your data, you're likely just trying to spoof your location so that geo-restricted apps like Netflix, Hulu, BBC and others will actually let you watch their content.

VPN Video Reviews this seems allot more convoluted then maybe your letting on? if Apple TV doesn’t let you stream Netflix or other services, doesn’t that mean that you can’t even get the app to play on there unless you somehow modified your system??? Won't work for Hulu as every time you restart your Apple TV Hulu thinks you have a new location and it asks you if you want to change your location. You can only do that 4 times a year. Believe me I tried it.
@@unmeitobaku4741 Yeah I agree, I think it's better setting up at the level of the router as the Apple is connected to the router. I have a Samsung smart tv with Netflix app and I would probably need to set up the VPN at the level of the router.
Unfortunately it doesn't give me the opportunity to manually set my DNS. The only option is other where I have to key in my network name. My ATV is aV3

I will say one thing though... This did not immediately work for me. I kept getting a "Hulu / Netflix is unavailable. Try again later" prompt. So I contacted Express VPN customer service and they walked me through a few extra steps...
1. Turn your VPN off
2. Log in to your ExpressVPN account
3. DNS Settings (top of the page)
4. "Register my IP address" + Enable "Automatically register my IP address"
5. Restart Apple TV
I live in Vietnam and these extra 5 steps above what the tutorial stated helped get me online. Good luck!

How do I select which country the SmartDNS will route the traffic through? I am on a Canadian VPN on my phone, but am still seeing non-Canadian content on my Apple TV after setting everything up and restarting the ATV. Thanks!

After finally receiving my new Apple TV box, I tried the procedure that you suggested on your video! Unfortunately, it did not work for me! However, all is not lost! I purchased an Asus router and installed Express VPN on it instead! Everything is working like a charm!

Hey Robert, so glad you found it helpful. The short answer is that no, it this is a change that will only affect your Apple TV. Any other devices connected to your wifi won't see any change. I don't think you have to have DDNS (which for those who don't know stands for "Dynamic DNS"), but it can often help.

I found this video because I am interested in spoofing my location for one particular video app on my Apple TV - but I want the other apps to remain US-based. Since that's not possible - the setting is for everything on the Apple TV - I'd have to toggle the location of my VPN access point before using this app. Is that possible with ExpressVPN? i.e.: can you control what country the smart DNS is coming from?

I'm not that tech savvy so a lot of this is really confusing to me. I want to avoid blackouts of NBA and MLB games on my Apple TV 4k. During my research I've seen a lot of people using a SmartDNS but I've also read that they are not as safe security-wise as a VPN. Where I'm confused on your video is that you're using a service called Express VPN but your given a Smart DNS. So are you getting the added security of a VPN?

You can only add official apps from the Apple App Store. There are no VPN apps for the Apple TV right now.

1. Is itunes streaming blocked in foreign countries even if I already have the movies in my US account?
2. If it is, does ExpressVPN run fast enough for 4K streaming?
(Of course, DNS speed depends on original internet speed. But I live in South Korea which is known for super-fast internet speed, 1Gbps in my case, so original internet speed is not an issue.)
Please, answer me, I can't just throw away my 200 bucks for streaming service that won't even play in 4K properly!

1) Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It's unreliable at best.
2) If original speed is high, a VPN should only decrease it slightly, so 4K should be possible.

You'll need to find a SmartDNS service that offers an Australian IP address. I don't know one off-hand, so I suggest you Google or ask around different SmartDNS providers to see what they offer.

Thanks for the video, the newer generation Apple TV has different settings, so you dont have a itunes store options under settings any more...any new vids on the newer gen Apple TV 4K? I did the DNS setup and all is good, but cant change my Netflix region...any help will be appreciated
Yea, this is a problem with some SmartDNS - you don't have the ability to change the Netflix region. There are other DNS options that let you choose regions. I will be doing an updated video using Apple TV 4K later this year, though.

I am a cable cord-cutter. I now watch all my TV via the DirectTV Now app. The issue I am having is, I recently moved to a new location. The local channels are not yet available here where I am now. However, just a few miles up the road in Boston, I can get ABC, CBS, and NBC and others with no issues. But here in RI, nothing. So will spoofing the DNS help me to be able to watch local channels from Boston or somewhere else? Is there a way to make the app think I am still back in Texas or another location that does have the rights to view local channels?
My advice just invest in a Chromecast or Firestick and it is so easy.

This might be a silly question : does this technique gives you a single country IPS or can you then just change between countries without having to re enter that code? In other terms, do you need to re-enter the code each time you want to virtually be in a different country? Many thanks !!
Express VPN and most other VPN providers lock your Smart DNS to a US sever.

Thanks for the tutorial! Easy enough but... this doesn’t seem to work for unblocking certain geographically restricted TH-cam content. There are ways around it like downloading and streaming normally, or
mirroring (not AirPlay!) via Safari from macOS or iOS.
Thanks, Jose. The way I've shown it (with ExpressVPN) only works with US content. If you want other geographic locations, you'll need to find a SmartDNS service that offers multiple locations.

This vid is well done and most helpful. One question I do have is what happens if I want to watch through an app that does NOT load onto the Apple TV 4K? Specifically I am trying to get IMdB on the Apple TV with no success. I can install Express VPN on my iPad along with ImB and watch the program that way but really need to get it on the large tv screen. Any Suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Well, if you're using an iPad and an Apple TV, you can connect to the VPN on your iPad and then mirror the iPad on the Apple TV. If that doesn't work, just use an adapter to connect the iPad directly to your TV and stream in that way. That's what I do!
@@AllThingsSecured Thank you for your reply. That works In some circumstances only. For example, if I try that on Netflix, and I push it to Apple TV (where I have a copy of Netflix on it) the signal from the iPad is rejected with a warning to use the Netflix on your TV.
The most critical one though is if I want to use the IMdB program, I can watch out of country programs via it on my iPad but the program will not connect with the Apple TV unit. I have several apps on my AppleTV so replicating those on the IPAD with a hard wire so I can watch on the large tv does not work.
It is also not possible to load the IMdB program on the Apple TV (4K) as it cannot be found via the App Store on the Apple TV.
In this case is there any advantage to going to a second router approach to get around Apple TV not directly allowing VPN support? I am in Canada and really only want to watch one series n IMdB without going to the hassle of a second router etc.

How would you subscript to Hulu or Netflix etc.? Do you do it through the app on the Apple TV? I guess you can't do this on the desktop either since the smart DNS is setup on the Apple TV itself?
Subscribing to Hulu or Netflix needs to be done on their respective websites. Once you've subscribed, you just input your login credentials through Apple TV.
I did exactly what you said with vpn express but it still blocks Hulu and Netflix . It doesn’t work.
I’ve followed your instructions and Stan will not play on AppleTV only on my IPad here is the error message:
“Stan is not available in your region. If you are in Australia but using a VPN please turn off your VPN and try again”

Unfortunately, at least with ExpressVPN, you can't change the country. You'll want to connect with their customer support to verify.

If I wanted my CBS app to think I was in Massachusetts (when I’m actually on the opposite coast) could I do that within the settings of the VPN app?
Theoretically yes. It's more difficult using SmartDNS since the options are limited, but with a VPN on your computer or a VPN on your WiFi router could accomplish the same thing.

It used to work for years like that, but not anymore with Disney+ or Hulu! It simply does work and on Hulu I can't even log in anymore :/

This method only works for 4th generation and later. You might need to create a DDNS hostname using a free service like Dynu.
The ExpressVPN tutorial created a DDNS hostname first. What’s that about? Is that process necessary?
They're just trying to make sure that the IP address you use to access the server remains the same (that's how they identify that it's you using the service). If you find that you have trouble using the service because it doesn't recognize you, you may need to go through that process first.

Using SmartDNS, there is no need to “connect” on any device. You’re just rerouting your DNS requests.

It's up to you, but keep in mind that Netflix has different licensing agreements in each country. This means that with each location you'll have different show options.

No , convert a old router to DD-WRT and setup a OpenVPN with NordVPN instructions for it. Just change network to connect to your VPN . Program 2 or 3 routers if you have them in your closet... with different servers/country on them .

It should, but only if the SmartDNS provider you use allows for specific server configurations with your DNS. I'm not sure if ExpressVPN does, but others like 12VPN do allow you to choose where your SmartDNS location is.

It's strange how it doesn't allow VPN apps on Apple TV but does let you with iPhone and iPad. VPN support should be a feature they add; it would make life so much easier. I'm starting to find the Apple TV platform too restrictive at times.
Yea, it can be really frustrating, Craig. I think they add it to phones and iPads because it's a common business enterprise feature. Not so with the TV.

With IPVanish, you'll need to install it on your WiFi router. There's no way to do it on the Apple TV.

Will this work for changing your Netflix region to watch shows blocked in the US? if so, how? After doing the steps in your video shows that are allowed in different regions are still not showing up. Express vpn works great on iPad. Turn to region and all the shows appear. Not using this method on applets though. Any advise?
It should, but using SmartDNS makes it much harder to choose which region you want to connect with. You'll want to use a SmartDNS service that gives you the ability to change your region (ExpressVPN does not do this, they only give you a US-based DNS address).

Does this work on a school-issued Apple TV for a classroom? My school has draconian wifi restrictions, where I can’t even access streaming platforms. Media, tv, and film are major parts of my curriculum.

Why not just put your smart DNS in the router? Than that will take care of all your devices wired or wireless.
