A great all rounder is the Godox AD200 and all its reincarnations, best compromise IMO at present, 200 w/s, HSS, TTL, 2.4G wireless not much bigger than a beefy speed light but 2 to 3 times more power, 400+ shots out of a battery, bare bulb and speed light head, this before you start getting some extras for it, with a $20 adapter you can use it with any modifiers that has a Bowens S fit, you can get a second unit and a dedicated adapter to join the 2 units together and it becomes a 400 w/s unit, which is a respectable power for a strobe, with let’s say the budget of one top notch strobe $2000ish you can have 6xAD200 that can be combined however you like from a 3x400 to 6x200 combination, a relatively compact system that is portable, flexible, quite powerful with any choices of modifiers you wish; the only 2 points where I can see it struggle versus speed lights and strobes are that it isn’t really possible to mount it on camera ( you can with an adapter) and can’t have the recycle times of a 1200+ w/s strobe.... Also if you are creative with your triggers you can easily achieve Hypersync

I m mixing speedlight with studio strobe. You don't speak of the modeling light (some speedlight have it now) but it's a great advantage, and for speedlight you can find good gel pack cheaper than big sheet.

Thank you for the informative video. The best way to grow professionally moving up from one stage to another and understanding you've done everything with what you have and you just need more. Quite quickly we get unsatisfied with built-in flashes and move to speedlites then, possibly, to strobes. I use them both depending on the situation and location, sometimes even a combination of strobes as main lights and speedlites as the 'auxiliary fleet'

I have 2 softboxes and 1 canon 430 ex ii speedlight. Can I use them together with my flash (the canon 430) on camera? If yes, how do I get my flash to go off with my softbox lights?

    • @MiguelQuilesJr
      @MiguelQuilesJr  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Good question. You would need a remote to put on your camera to trigger your flash, and potentially a receiver on the flash to fire it. You could also get a 2nd flash and set it to flash whenever the on camera flash fires. Hope that helps!

Great tips for folks who're just starting out. As I've continued to develop my body of work over the decades, I've learned to keep several speedlights, monolights, and even continuous lights, with dozens of light modifiers, some that only work with speedlights, some that only work with bigger lights, and some that work with both. I just never know when, where or what I might photograph, so I like to be ready for anything.

  • @Strongbear2013

Thanks for the video. Is a battery powered strobe usually more expensive than a mains powered one? Also, with speedlights, you suggested that they don't all have to be of equal quality. Does that mean that your main one which is the key light can be the most expensive with the most features (eg TTL and HSS) while the other ones (eg a hair light flash) can be missing those features? And would a flash trigger still be able to trigger even the lower models?

Recently got the Godox v1 the battery is really good and and I keep a Godox 860ii as a back up. For the product shoots I use the Godox led 60v in the soft box. For the studio shoots I am struggling as my studio space is really small due to the white walls the light is bouncing everywhere. Am going to try the grid as suggested by you.

I think buy flashes, and i dont know if a speedlight combo can be a good choice: x2 godox v860ii (can be at same price x4 godox tt658 but i dont like much the AA energy) and can add a V1 later (NG 91).... or buy x1 v869ii with a one Ad200 (200w)... all bad ideas, better something a strobe 400w? thank you

  • @nmelcam1

Hi Miguel, saludos desde Camuy, PR :-) I think that the AD 200's offer the best of both worlds. The are extremely portable, have the option of bare bulb or Flash like Fresnel head out of the box and offer the optional Round head plus they are priced slightly above a good 3rd party flash but lower than an Original Canon or Nikon Flash even though the AD 200 offers around 3 times the power output . I. just purchased 3 AD200 Pro's, the B2 head adapter (so I can use 2 AD200's as one light with 400w/s) and the H200 which when I receive it, will use it for my beauty dish just to see it I get a softer light than with the flash or bare bulb :-) The other 2 AD200's will be for my striplights or with the B2 adapter for the softbox and using outside. I will still use my regular flashes for the background and hair lights or maybe buy 3 more in the future to change them all :-) Off and the new Flashpoint R2 Pro Mark 2 trigger, same as the Godox X-Pro, but with bluetooth and a slightly better button layout as now you can turn on or off any group just by double tapping the group button. Any thoughts or recommendations.
    Keep safe

    Great video! 🙌🏻
The slow recycle time of speedlights becomes less of a problem for shots where freezing motion is not important and the photographer knows what they want from the shot. It is a problem when the photographer has no plan for the shot and the subject keeps changing poses fast between shots.

I’ve recently switched over to interfit strobes. Their S1 and badger unleashed comprise my location lights, which are great as they’re battery powered. In my studio, it’s all honey badger, which are plugins with the manual flash trigger which gives me more groups.

I am thinking of going for GODOX AD200 pro, currently using TT685N. I am not sure if I should be switching considering I can see the compare videos but the power comparison isn't clearly available to see. My main purpose to go for AD200 pro is to get more power and get better recycle time. I am using a softbox with my current TT685N where I feel the power goes way low when clicking outdoors or when the softbox is farther than 5 feet from the subject. Please suggest if you can. If there is a video you can point me to, please do that as well.

    • @MiguelQuilesJr

Nowadays it's getting even harder to tell. Generally speaking, speedlights have a hotshoe on the bottom so they can be mounted onto your camera, while strobes go on a light stand and need a trigger to fire them. The ad100 is more akin to a strobe, just lower powered.

Thanks! You can gel them the same as a Speedlite. Just make sure the modeling lights aren't turned on. 👍

@@MiguelQuilesJr I might consider joining PPA. The reason I watched is bc I've always used speadlights and yes it does the job but I feel I could use more power and a change.

Love the Profoto menu. Glad I’m not the only one who was confused by the menu.

Same here! Starting out the menus we're just terrible. If I don't use them for a few weeks it can be tough going back to use a Speedlite.
