    What I love about you both is that you are true sailors. You don't need the fanciest or prettiest boat, the highest technology, or the latest and mostly useless gadgets. Keep on trucking!

  • @matui6983

    Just another reason to fit 3-way valve thru engines sea-water thru hull. Shut engines water feed off which will open the extra port to which you can attach a hose that can lay in the bilge or be held so that you can use the engine as a bilge pump.

  • @andrewbrown2063
    @andrewbrown2063 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The check valve goes in the hose. It prevent siphoning back. If you rely on the electric bilge pump it will drain the battery m, when the battery runs down the boat sinks, unless you are there to close the seacock and pump out. A check valve takes a few dollars and a few minutes to install. Better still is to route the bilge outlet hose to the stern where it will usually be above the water, and fill in the current hole.

  • @ianscott3180
    @ianscott3180 ปีที่แล้ว

    Back in the day, to have plenty of water in the bilge was normal. I grew up sailing old wooden boats which leaked. The hull leaked, decks leaked, the stern tubes leaked and cockpits were not self draining and emptied into the bilge. We had a fitted hand bilge pump and at least one hand held pump. In bad weather we put bungs in the cockpit drains in case we shipped any green water. If you did a bucket was on hand. And they said that it was the good old days! Great videos guys, I love them and am so envious now my cruising years are behind me. 🙃Oops that was a big wave.

    Install dry-out pump. Two pumps system: dry-out diaphragm pump just to keep bilge dry, no check valve needed. 2nd: high volume impeller pump in case of problems.
    You may also consider an emergency crash pump running off the engine.

    always have a bunch of plastic bags aboard. you can tuck them from the outside into any wholes or cracks on the hull, it will fill up the gap and seal it.

    Cant remember where but i saw somewhere that your first action on taking on water should be to change tack, That`s going to lift all the through hulls that are under water out. You would be going the wrong way but you would hopefully not be sinking, which in the grand scheme of things is still a win.
    Im so glad you guys are back i missed you.

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've definitely heard that as advice from John Kretschmer and he's certainly had enough experience at keeping boats from sinking! I think we were minutes away from doing that if the water intake got any worse. 🙂

    • @darrellstyner0001
      @darrellstyner0001 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SailingMillennialFalcon Tacking is a good idea once you've searched for the leak and been unable to locate it, but I think you did the right thing in coming up with some theories and testing them while the water was still coming in. It sucks to "fix" the problem by changing tack or reducing speed, but have no idea what happened and no way test potential solutions as night falls and you're miles from land.
      The land adventures are great, but the things that come up when you're underway are the most interesting to me. Keep 'em coming!

  • @cjsail

    Waterline bilge pump discharges are a dangerous vanity that leave you reliant on a check valve or siphon break. Better a bit of dribble on the topsides and a high discharge.

    Always install a check valve, they sell them separately as well. We had a sailboat sink at our Village Park Dock because they didn’t have one, and they got drunk and forgot to pump it. They stumbled up the ramp and poured themselves into a tavern and came home to a sunk boat. They were Canadians on their way down the Hudson to the Bahamas, and it ended their trip just a few hundred miles in.

  • @bobbates7343

    Years ago Sv Delos went to help a boat that was sinking and quickly learned that even with extra people with buckets and whatever tiny electric pumps it was not going to work. So then someone from another boat came over with a gas powered pump that pumped the water out via a hose that looked the same as a fire hose . That pump worked very well and the boat was saved. Delos then bought one of those pumps and as far as I know they still have it onboard. Seems like a great idea the hole set up is small but can pump so much water so fast .

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, a gas powered hose! That's not something you often hear of someone having on board. Also taking the water intake hose off the sea cock and sticking it in the bilge is a good bilge pump alternative.

    • @tomriley5790
      @tomriley5790 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wasn't a gas powered hose it was a high volume hand pump they even filmed the guy pumping it.

    • @Nerd3927
      @Nerd3927 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SailingMillennialFalcon You will be pumping al sort of crap though the heat exchangers. If you are successful your engine overheats, and takes a beating. The change of an equilibrium leak is small so in the best case you will have to pump water in. Most likely you will loose your engine and electric bilge pumps and be in a worse situation.

    In GGR Many use Hydrovane, they say they (or all brands) need frequent checking to see all in order. Some will mark the bolts and nuts so it can be easily seen if they have loosened. I think 5200 would be preferable, locking mount tighter, and a bolts tourqueability would be able to break loose if desired.

    • @orwellknew9112
      @orwellknew9112 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could double nut the bolts or use lock washers or lock nuts or blue loctite or a combination. Or if the bolts were large ones, you could drill a hole through them just past the nut and use a cotter pin to stop it from backing out. Not sure if blue loctite is rated for marine use under water, but I’m sure the is a thread locker that is.

    We completely agree about not wanting to hear bilge alarms at sea. We had exactly the same problem with our bilge pump after rebuilding our cockpit and re running our bilge pump hoses. It’s a pretty scary situation. We had 2 electric bilge pumps with float switches and 2 completely separate salvage pumps rigged as well. We sailed straight back to the boat yard only for all the pumps to stop as we entered the marina, because the boat stopped squatting!

    This taking on water situation is probably the biggest reason we're planning to build a cruising trimaran... with amas that have 100% of the main hull buoyancy. The idea of a hull filling faster than one can handle and being pulled down by the lead keel kind of freaks me out. It may become un-sailable or even flip in a very strong storm with major handling mistakes made but should stay on top of the water unless many bad things happen at the same time. And then it's a life raft, and you still have a inflatable life raft and dinghy. It's similar to the reason we're converting a school bus instead of buying a motor home... All steel means in a worst case scenario, it's likely more survivable. Understand that there are different schools of thought on the mono/multi debate, of course!

    Yeah flooding ranks up there with fire. I heard that if your billage pump alarm goes off than to tack. If it fills up again than you know that it's some where in the center of the boat. But if it stops than you know it's on the opposite side. But glad found it and fixed it . But I'm surprised that they sell a billage pump that doesn't have a check valve. It must be one of those all around pumps. I'm curious about why that pump was replaced. I used to do HVAC and Grundfoss is a brand new in water pumps but they changed the way that they made the pumps. They put bushings instead of bearings and after the chance they had nothing but problems with them. But of course they didn't fix the mistake because they would last for about a year and they only had a 90 day warranty on them. I hate companies that do shit like that. I'm from the days that you took pride in your work and you built things to last. Okay, thank you for sharing your videos and see you next week.
