    In this short interview, I answer several questions from Richard Simcott in English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese and Russian.
    In the first part of the video, I explain what I do in the early stages of learning a new language and how much time I need to spend on every language.
    In the second part, I share with Richard what I do in order to maintain all the languages that I speak.
    Then, I touch upon the importance of having a good accent and what fluency means to me.

    All I can do is cheer on! Your videos are always interesting and inspirational. Below is the comment I left on the previous version:
    In my experience talking to yourself is not just helpful but essential. An 'internal monologue' helps your language grow and adapt itself to new 'trains of thought', not to mention helping the language truly become a part of your personality and your life.

    You guys really sound like native speakers in almost all those languages. It's truly amazing and I have to thank you both for sharing so much about your language learning experiences with us. It's really inspiring and useful for other language learners. Haha you both sounded a little funny speaking Dutch though, but still very good. I know a lot of people here in the Netherlands that have lived here for over 20 years and aren't able to express themselves that well.

    I have been guilty of spending almost all of my time on input. This video and recent talks with Richard have helped me realise the need to balance this with much more output (speaking, thinking, writing). Luca's idea mentioned here of output in the mornings (when energy is highest) and input in the evenings is a great one, for which I am very grateful..

    I agree that talking to yourself is absolutely key when you don't have many people to speak with. Now with the advent of the internet, one can watch video after video of native speakers and acquire different materials, but it is so essential to practice speaking and expressing oneself. I also read aloud, record my voice, interpret myself, sing in other languages, act out scenarios, and spend time thinking only in the language even when I am not speaking and just going about my daily routines. I really like watching movies and series and repeating what is said, trying to emulate the various subtleties in people's speech. I'd say that most people are not truly aware of all of the ways one can practice languages as well as the fact that most people do not have a passion to learn languages. Vouloir, c'est pouvoir.

    you guys are incredible! Luca, it pleases me that your taking on chinese and stepping out of the mainstream germanic/ romance/ slavic branches of I.E. where although indeed an accomplishment, learning a new language within the above mentioned boundaries mainly consists of new vocabulary and pronunciation. It's not until one leaves the commonly studied IE languages that the richness and variety of human language becomes apparent: the extensive noun classes of swahili, reduplication ...

    It's impressive, but multilingual people who speak this many languages usually speak European languages. They almost always speak 3-4 Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese in this case) and 3-4 Germanic language (English, German, Dutch, and Swedish in this case). I'm not saying it's easy, but it's not impossible to learn this many related languages. Once you know a major Romance language and a major Germanic language, it's a good starting point for learning other related languages. Russian is the only language here that has a different alphabet and is totally different from the other languages. Still, it's much easier for a European to speak this many European languages than it is for an Asian to be fluent in 2 totally different Asian languages with different writing systems, like Japanese and Mandarin.

    • @conradnal8934
      @conradnal8934 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As an italian i would say Russian isn't actually very different from italic languages as it has many Latin words, and the alphabet is not a issue. The real difficulties come when you move to a non-indoeuropean language imo

    Ciao Luca! Innanzitutto complimenti per i tuoi video e per la passione che ci metti. Sono una grande "fonte di ispirazione" :) volevo farti una domanda: io ho studiato (male) il tedesco a scuola, il problema è che non l'ho mai usato concretamente. So leggerlo e un po' ascoltarlo ma per quanto riguarda l'uso attivo mi trovo spesso in difficoltà. Anche quando sono andato a Berlino mi esprimevo in modo molto elementare. In che modo mi consigli di riprendere e ampliare la conoscenza della lingua?

    Some pointers on Dutch: in “Russisch”, the ‘i’ is pronounced like ‘ie’ in ‘die’. Also, “ik houd van ze allen” is absolutely correct but a bit old-fashioned and could be better worded as “ik houd van ze allemaal”. Or better, change the sentence to “ik vind ze allemaal [adjective]”.

    Ho una domanda per Luca. Come fai a non far influenzare tra loro le lingue? Ad esempio parlo il francese come seconda lingua, ma ogni volta voglio parlare inglese, salta fuori sempre qualche parola in francese. aspetto una tua risposta.
