To speak so many languages so naturally is something rare and special. This video is inspirational, and a testament to hard work paying off. Richard and Luca are the reason that I have been inspired to post videos about language learning on youtube..

Luca, I've seen most of your videos now and thus have had quite a bit of exposure to your American accent. While among the best of any foreigner I have heard, and certainly laudable, it was still subtly foreign. During this last question, however, your accent was almost perfect! I say this with very critical ears.
You two are inspirations to all of us who wish to learn multiple languages. Thanks for taking the time to upload this interview!

Hello, luca, I must say I'm amazed by/at your way to speak every language, but what I look up to you the most is your capability and feasibility of switching from a language into another with no problems as if you were a machine that works very well. I'm a native spanish speaker, and I don't notice any piece of foreign accent on you, Sorry for my English, I'm learning it, and feel passionate about the language for now but sometimes, I get so down mostly for not understanding everything.

You guys are really inspiring! I am 22 years old, and I speak portuguese, english, and spanish. I just finished my bachelors in my major business, so it did not give me much time for languages, and dammit my interest in languages came a little late too. The next in my top list are mandarin, french, and italian!

I speak 4 languages, but I understand pronunciation of close to 10 languages. English is my first language. So language is something that I understand, I just haven't given much time to actually learn. Luca, your english is actually fantastic and ALMOST perfect. Only on certain words have an accent, which makes you sound like you moved to USA when you were very young. I am very impressed by your pronunciation of english specifically, and also french. Keep up the impressive work!

I think so many people have commented on his accent being "native sounding" because it's like 99% there and he'll go on for long stretches sounding completely American. Then he'll do something like start making his /o/ sound flat or something. It's just *so* close (especially for never even visiting America) that it makes it seem possible for an adult learner to get a native accent which is exciting for some people. If his accent was just okay, like 90%, then no one would even comment.

I wish I could say something about this.
At themoment the only language I can speak with any problems is my mother language (Spanish), however, i've been learning english for more than 6 years (and is not perfect yet, in fact, I feel I still have a lot of work to do), also french, german and italian, and only one year ago I decided to start learning dutch, russian and japanese.
Perhaps is this one of the biggest problems I have to deal with, I always expect to do everything perfect from the beginning, but making mistakes is an important part of the learning process.

Leuke video, jullie twee! Good job guys! I'd wanted to say, à propos the issue about people who say they speak up to 30 or 40 languages. Don't forget that even though in a western european perspective, this might be fairly impossible, there are people in other parts of the world who communicate in many different languages in their everyday life and, in particular, during their whole life span. I believe, are to be found in various parts of Africa, south of Sahara, or in the India-region.

Richard is extraordinary too, they both speak German, Italian and English with almost no accent at all! And the longer they speak, the more native they sound! Richard is English mother language and Luca Italian mother language I figure out, okay -- anyway, it's formidable all the same. I mention these idioms 'cause they are the only three I approximately know... (-:

Want jullie zijn in mijn opinie de beste polyglots op youtube, maar jullie Nederlands klinkt zeker niet als een "native speaker'. Terwijl jullie spaans en frans nagenoeg perfect is. It's very close, though. Sometimes it's just a word spoken a little differently (which could sometimes have even been picked up from someone of a differect dialect, though his accent is USA). I've never heard someone who has learned English as an adult speak with less accent so, as you said, his accent is "brilliant." The first video I saw of him I assumed he was American without paying attention.

@TheTrieutran I noticed within two words that he was not a native speaker. This is how the great majority of native speakers respond to hearing someone speak with an accent: You don't take a full minute to decide. Either they have an accent, or they do not. It makes no sense whatsoever to suggest another minute of listening makes any difference once you've already detected the accent.

I am not a polyglot, but I can imitate languages easily. Now here is the connection (may be): I am also pretty good at listening to people and imiate them. I mean their voice especially. Sound, timbre, intonation etc. I wonder of you guys can do that too?
You've been praised enough, so a critical note. Your Dutch sounds foreign (the "r" and "-lijk", your Portuguese too. Richard: make the words a tad longer and work on your "lh". It is one sound. Luca: it is "ão" and not "an". Critical mode out!

  • @Luiseut59

It was crazy, I couldn't believe you were not a native Spanish speaker... So I guess, based on that, that achieving a native like or near-native like accent is not that impossible... Am I right? Please give me some hope.. haha

I grew with 2 basic languages (english mother tongue and the german language where I live), and 2 other languages (greek father tongue and french in school). I often had the feeling that the first three languages are each stored in a different area of the brain, but not the fourth. It turned out that I sometimes confused greek and french words. I don't know if this theory about languages stored in different parts of the brain is true, but I think it probable.
