- In this episode, Kingfish is mistakenly drafted into the army, and he is given an enthusiastic send-off by his wife and lodge brothers. Kingfish pretends to join the 135th regiment, and instead, hides in town.

Brilliant cast and script. Great classic comedy worth watching all these years later. Pity recent sitcoms cannot match this show.
I love this Black ensemble cast and wish they had gotten the recognition they deserved.

It is too bad that they were taken off the air. Something about blacks being offended,, as if today's black shows are less offensive. It was comedy, people. Nothing more.

Tim Moore (the Kingfish) was absolutely wonderful. A great comedian.
They were all perfectly cast in their roles, everyone was superb, fantastic bunch of actors.
Redd Foxx cited him as one of his mentors in comedy. He learned well.

Re: "Roast Beef Scandal" of January 1958.
[Tim] Moore ["Kingfish" of Amos 'n' Andy] fired a gunshot in his home because of his "mooching in-laws" (stepson, stepdaughter, and her husband) when he found that the last of the New Year's roast beef had been eaten by them.[46]
Moore related, "These free-loaders have eaten everything in the house. My wife protects them and every time we talk about it, we get into an argument.
The argument got a little loud and the next thing I knew, the big boy (his stepson Hubbard) jumped out of his chair. I ran upstairs and got out my old pistol. I didn't want to hit anybody."[63]
When the police arrived at the home, Moore, pistol still in his belt, told them, "I'm the old Kingfish, boys. I'm the one you want. I fired that shot. I didn't want to hit anyone, although I could have.
Anyway, you should have seen the in-laws scatter when I fired that gun."[64]
The shot Moore fired hit the china cabinet; he was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, with police calling him the "funniest prisoner in police history."[63]
Moore was initially ordered held on $1,000 bond; the judge changed his mind and released Moore on his own recognizance.[64]

I remember watching this program when I was a kid. Never thought I'd see any of them again. Enjoyed all of those characters immensely and loved the fact they acted so freely and spontaneously.
I was going to write the same thing, I always like watching Amos 'n' Andy, they always came on just for The little Rascals back in the day, they were my favorites!

@@boone1joker858 I think I heard somewhere - or read, I can't remember - that it was Jesse Jackson (remember him?) who played a big part in getting it pulled from network TV. It had to have been in the late '60's, b/c I remember watching them as a kid in the early to mid '60's.
I loved this show, the actors really defined their character's personalities.

Simply one of the best sitcoms ever! Loved the characters! This show was on the level of I Love Lucy! Simply aired at the wrong time! The plots were incredible! ❤❤
It aired at the RIGHT time. It was one of the first devoted to Black actors. Our Gang beat them by 30 years.

These came on at 5:30pm when I was a child, between the 5 o'clock and 6 o'clock news ... we'd watch them just before "supper" ... now I have them all on DVD ... nothing as funny today ...

Never happen! Not enough talent in Hollywood or NY for that to happen. Clean, funny shows from the '50's have been replaced with filthy mouth actors, sex orientated movies/tv shows, unmarried couples living together and gays. Absolutely shameful!!!!!

I started saying that back in the '70s. All in the Family and Mash were the last two great ones. (for me) Not until Married with Children. Never watched another one. Never saw Seinfeld.

The television show was preceded by the radio show which had white actors portraying African Americans. It was racist to its core.
The subsequent television show was essentially the only widespread, depiction of African Americans to the viewing public. Since America was even more racially segregated in every aspect of life at that time - housing, employment, theaters, restaurants, public services, government - than it is now this show provided many whites their only up close exposure to African Americans while the full spectrum of white lives, from comedy to drama and everything in between, were fully represented on tv and in movies. Consequently, no one ever had a one dimensional view of white people in this country based on what they saw on tv and in everyday life. Had white Hollywood racism not been so prevalent and instead afforded African American actors an equal opportunity for acting roles, and permitted stories which reflected the full expanse of African American life, the Amos n' Andy show could’ve been viewed in context, as a comedic depiction of African American people. Spencer Williams Jr, who played Andy on the show, was a highly skilled movie director, who wrote, directed, produced and starred in several movies. The white studios and good ole boy network either blocked or severely limited his movies' distribution and exposure to the general public.
So yes, these were great actors on the Amos n' Andy tv show. With such great talent, ever wonder why you almost never saw any of them again in tv or movie roles? Because white Hollywood wanted the Amos n' Andy one-dimensional portrayal of Black people in the entertainment media - until they eventually realized there was money to be made by more broadly exploiting this enormous talent. This is the role of racism associated with the Amos n' Andy show.

Did you ever notice the very clever and funny dialogue in each episode? The actors with their tremendous ability have baked in their acting skills into each scene and episode.

Do I smell a movie that should be made? I grew up watching these and we laughed our buts off. Yes, there were questionable stereotypes, but we didn't see it that way. Where else in 1951 could you turn on TV and see Blacks represented as Lawyers, Doctors and successful people? Actually, we never thought of them as Black, just fine actors. Boy, wasn't that a revolutionary thought for the times? And the draft letter said exactly that. I got mine 18 years later, word for word. You know, I tried for years to find out who those local neighbors were who selected me. Never could. Probably a good thing. Many thanks to those who made this show happen and the actors.
Notice that the only black characters in this show who act as "stereotypes" are the 3 or 4 who are the regular cast. All other black characters behave in a white middle class way. All the episodes of A&A in radio and TV were the same in this respect. The regulars are all veterans of the black vaudeville that was popular before movies and radio, they are playing the stereotyped classical roles they did in vaudeville. These roles were popular with black and white audiences. Amos & Andy was as popular in the 1930s and 40s as The Simpsons was in the 1980s and 90s. Amos & Andy is no different from any other sitcom that shows white people as cliché clowns and buffoons, such as The Honeymooners, I love Lucy, Charlie McCarthy, All In The Family, Saturday Night Live skits, etc., etc. If any black American today objects to Amos & Andy for any reason, I'm for censoring it. But I urge you all to take a careful look at it first. The show is disconnected from the tragedy of race discrimination, just as those all-white show are disconnected from our other tragedies. Comedy shows are almost always disconnected from sad reality. They have to be, in order to laugh at human folly. Is it wrong to be funny?
@@Axgoodofdunemaul NO, it is not wrong to be funny. I always wondered the exact same thing you are relating to. No one complained when the white people in these comedy shows were made to look like idiots. That's what they were there for. Although their is some truth in comedy characterization, it is exaggerated greatly most times to make you laugh. And that's what it was there for. I believe we all know people like Ralph Cramden, Charlie, and Amos and that's what makes it funny. I have the greatest respect for all humans no matter what race they are or cultural background. Maybe we see a little of ourselves in these characters. The most difficult thing to laugh at is yourself. But if you can, I believe you are on the way to a successful life. This was a great show, well produced, well written and well acted, and that's the way I will always remember it.
Unfortunately, a movie will never be made. Society is getting more and more politically correct and over sensitive. But, funny is funny, and these shows are hilarious. Sadly,this was the only show featuring black performers on tv at the time, so this is the only view many white people had of black people. The medium was the message.

Amos and Andy is the most wonderful delightful television comedy show. It is hilarious and funny. As a child I just loved every character on the show, especially the Kingfish played by Tim Moore, he was my favorite character on the show. The show was devoid of any racism. People were just people. It was in a world of doctors, lawyers, judges, business men and people of all levels in life, all of the same race. There was no depiction of any race on the show, just hilarious, clean and wholesome comedy that made you laugh. The Amos and Andy comedy show deserves high praise.
We always watched this show and got such a kick out of it. Just funny. So glad I found it to watch again.

Love this show. I have all the episodes on a bootleg dvd. I watched this on tv as a kid, thanks for sharing ! Mantan Moreland would have been a great addition to the cast. Tim Moore was in his 60’s doing this show, he was sharp with his dialogue. As a white American, this show was no demeaning than the white cast in The Honeymooners with Jackie Gleason. I remember Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hard and Amos 'n' Andy were the funniest comedians on early radio and television in the early fifties. The only one not being replayed on TV today is Amos 'n' Andy. What a shame, I think they were really funny, but I guess I can understand. Thanks for bringing back the memories of sitting on the floor next to the old Philco and listening and laughing to these talented comedians of the past.

This episode reminds me of the very FIRST episode of Good Times when James was mistakenly hired at his dream job, but later found out that he was too old for the job! I believe the episode was called Too Old Blues! This episode of AnA was HILARIOUS!! 😆😆
AS a kid Amos n Andy was my favorite show for one reason only...it was awesome.

Watching Amos & Andy was one of the high lights of the 50's. Yeah! I layed on my belly in front of the little 9" T.V. too...like many of you. It made me laugh then...and still does today. Its hard to find things to laugh at in this crazy upsidedown world. Im thankful we have these to watch. Also The Honeymooners... I Love Lucy... Beverly Hillbillies....i could go on. Then the 80's shows came along. They weren't as funny. They got obscene...each generation got worse. Look where we are today! I wouldn't watch todays T.V. shows for 5 minutes. We got to watch some Great Westerns too! Not to mention the greatest detective shows. Then their was our music...from the 50's to early 80's...after that music started sounding the same. You can always tell a remake.
I feel very blessed to have lived in the days I did. Its sad to see how this generation is so twisted!

I too enjoyed all this shows. It was a better time and a time when you werent afraid to leave windows and doors unlocked or walk around your neighborhood without being attacked ,, different times now.
When I was a kid ,this show was on Radio, and my dad would play it in the car and we laughed , comedy was wonderful and fun . These actors were great!
If you listened to this show when it was on the radio you weren't listening to these folks. The radio actors were all white, when it went to TV they then used black actors.
Amos 'n' Andy started on the radio with the two white guys who came up with the idea.

Watch this with my grandfather when I was a child in the 60s and this is one of the best shows and best comedies these actors should be honored and in the Hall of Fame and their show should not have been taken off television because of the n-double-acp
In the late 50s, our school let out at 4:00, the same time that this show aired. We'd RUN home and miss only the first five minutes. I just love this Real Reel Trip down Memory Lane!

Nothing racist about that show they were a great comedy team. Even when I was little I used to laugh that show. Brings back a lot of warm memories. God bless them.

I was heartbroken when this wonderful show became an early victim of our overly sensitive society. Even as a white boy living in the south, we didn't see black or white, all we saw was actually rolling on the floor damn funny. I'm better for the experience. And the theme music is on another level.

As a Black child I loved watching this show. So sorry it was taken off the air. As I watch episodes now it brings back sweet memories. Those were the good ole days and in the south.

Wonderful program. I watched and re-watched every episode as a youngster in the 50's and 60's, but still remember most of the dialog.
Amos was a successful businessman as well as so msny other business in the show. Andy was super funny. Such good acting. Very much missed❤❤❤❤❤.
Best sitcom ever on TV. I was 10 years old when I watched these great shows and they portrayed black folk the same as hustling white folk. I grew to reflect these people they never showed to be scoff law’s prejudice or bad in any way. It’s the same as in any ethnic group to laugh at the funny side. I still watch these shows on TH-cam any time I have them on cd and listen to the M while driving I laugh my butt off people in other cars think I’m nuts. Oh I forgot. I am.
I'm old enough to remember watching these wnen they were new. Never a racist comment. All actors were black and very funny.
I am white Great actors, but to Not see that they were depicted as persons who could not even speak proper English was an insult to the black people !
I am so sorry the young folk of the 21st century have been robbed of some of the most talented people that have graced the tv screen! I reared my children on Amos n Andy first on lp records then on videos purchased . Part of their well balanced lifestyles they live today.

These men and women were some Of the best comedians of anytime. I have to be sure not to be Drinking or eating anything while I am watching this Show. I have choked more times on water or soda than I can count. You immediately start laughing when this comes on because you know you're going to see one of the best programs ever put on TV.
Just brilliant . much better than the crap they call comedy these days.
I watched this show as a child I never thought about the color of the actors skin only the stories and characters the actors portrayed. It was sad that some people only saw this show in a negative way.
Great comedic timing and simple plots... Easy to follow and very funny..and the all black cast was historic ..
Andy actually was a Sergeant Major in WW1 with Gen Pershing, the real deal.

I was probably 5 years old when I first saw this show. I'd heard it on the radio for a long time and loved it. Andy was my special favorite, but all their puns and bits made me happy. It was a surprise to see that the TV actors weren't white, and more of a surprise when Daddy told me the radio actors were white pretending to be black. One of the best things about radio: People didn't sound like color. They just sounded like human.
Edit: I forgot to add that this show represented another historical TV landmark: It was the first TV show to be filmed in 35 mm.

Actor Spencer Williams who played Andy was one of the most financially successful people in Hollywood. My mom knew him through industrial and military instructional film production. Williams had lots of various income streams. Sharp businessman and a superb musician.

This show is hilarious. I thank the uploader. I listened to some of the old radio eps of this show, but they are even funnier to watch.
This is the third "Amos and Andy" episode I've seen. So far, they are great! Bill Cosby was misguided in taking the shows off the market. The Black stereotypes of that era don't hold today, they are no better or worse than those seen in "Sanford and Son" or "Good Times." It is actually a pretty positive image of mid-century Black city life. People have jobs, dress well and have ambition (except the Kingfish, of course) - and no criminals. Maybe it was the shuckin' and jivin' language of Andy and the Kingfish that got Cosby so upset, but it is colorful and succinct, and the actors perform it beautifully. The show itself is at least as funny as I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners. Damn shame it's been lost to history.
Agreed. I remember watching these when I was quite young. I just thought the characters were likeable and funny. One of the funniest shows ever. Looking back, I don't think they were any more "stereotypical" or "offensive" than a show like "The Real McCoys" were to people from Appalachia or, for that matter, the nowadays probably more well known "Beverly Hillbillies".
This is jus Classic stuff. When I watched this with my parents I never knew any difference. It was CLASSIC.

One of the best sitcom series ever made!! All the cast was fantastic but Tim Moore as Kingfish was the absolute jewel and national treasure!!
The dapper and aristocratic Henry van Gilder was played by Jester Hairston. He wrote the Christmas Carol "Mary's Boychild," arranged and sang "Amen" in the movie Lillies of the Field (Sidney Poitier lip-synched it) and played Rolly Forbes in the TV show "Amen." Jester Hairston worked into his 90's and lived to be 99 and has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And there's sooo much more about the life of this remarkable man.
This feels like a terribly guilty pleasure in the 21st Century, but I'm laughing to tears! I watched this guilt free when I was child in the '50s.
