I watched this as a young kid and loved it. I knew the actors were black but didn’t think much about it. Mostly what I knew was they were funny. The whole show was based on a freeloader and how he worked harder getting out of work than he would have by working. I’ve known more than one person like that in my life and most were white. Funny has no race, creed, or color.

For Andy to be so convincing to all with his stupidity he HAD to be smart. Sapphire was the epitome of patience and forbearance, somewhat like Alice on 'The Honeymooners'. When she appeared, the Mamma was a gem of antipathy toward the Kingfish. Their acting ability was complete.
The blacks who bitch about this being a derogatory representation of colored people are self-serving and have no interest in promoting black enterprise. "I Love Lucy" and "Amos 'n Andy" were the two funniest comedies ever to appear on TV. These black actors' stipends (royalties) were cut short by the NAACP, not by the 'racist' white man 'who never gave them a chance'. Blacks, more than anyone else, kept down the black man. Maybe it is high time blacks began to look into the mirror and see something enlightening. - David Lyga

I heard this Joke on Galveston. Someone asked a Crabber (Crab Trapper) why he didn't cover up the hole in the sand of the captured crabs ?? He said, "Don't worry, when one tries to climb out, another will drag him back down."

MY POINT, THE "LIBERALS & ACTIVISTS" THAT PROTESTED THIS SHOW ONLY HURT THE ACTORS & Production Company. The continued success of this show would have spawned other Black shows, & would have helped evolve the Black identity sooner. Do Gooders, SMH.

About twenty years ago someone was showing clips of this episode on their blog to show how "offensive" the show was: showing that Black people are lazy, they can't speak proper English, and (the best) that they're "childlike and docile". I guess they thought Kingfish was the only character on the show.

I believe the problem with the show was that it reinforced negative stereotypes of African-Americans.
It came from the history where the main characters had originally been portrayed by white actors which I found offensive.
As a white guy and a former school teacher, I find the mispronunciation and misuse of words not to be authentic. I can only speak from the perspective of a former school teacher with many children of African-American descent.
That being said, I find the characters in this program wonderful. Kingfish is the greatest.
If one were able to take color and dialect out of this program the situation’s are extremely funny and would work very similarly to an Archie Bunker or Ralph Kramden.
My favorite episode was The delicate and tasteful Christmas episode with Amos and his daughter.
All of the actors on this program if they haven’t been recognized should be for the quality of their work.
The problem of course with a program like this is its appeal to bigots. However, it doesn’t turn people who are not bigoted into bigots.
I believe with a few dialogue tweaks the TV program would have been less offensive to many people.
As one who considers himself a social progressive I totally understand the criticism of the program but at the same time enjoy it very much.
I agree with one of the commenters that I imagine the actors did not get any residuals as that was the way most programs were back in the day.
I would really enjoy seeing a documentary on this program celebrating the actors who performed so well and honoring their memories in creating a show that was so entertaining. I absolutely believe a special Emmy should be created posthumously for this cast.
When I discuss the show with others we don’t talk about the backgrounds of the actors simply the humor of the situations.
I enjoy the show and as I stated earlier understand fully the objections many people find.
This is actually the kind of program that could be used in a classroom (not in the current political climate perhaps) to talk about bigotry, comedy and where lines might be drawn that don’t infringe on First Amendment rights while at the same time make every attempt not to be offensive.
I’d love to see this show redone and updated with a interracial cast. Taking race out of the equation and using the comedic situations I believe would be a winning combination.
Finally, while perhaps this would not be a program that could be used as part of the curriculum in the elementary and middle school level, if our society gets back to a more balanced outlook it could be great in high school and in colleges.
The ironic part of this is that politicians like Governor DeSantis couldn’t ban this show like they have banned teaching of slavery, antisemitism and the Holocaust, internment camps, treatment of Native Americans…
All of that is banned because it might make white youth feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately that can’t be said for this show.
Perhaps it’s a commentary on how far we need to go to create a kinder and gentler nation.
