...this is from a 1995 TBS/TNT produced program called "The Wizard of Oz in Concert - Dreams Come True", starring Jewel (Dorothy), Jackson Browne (Scarecrow), Roger Daltrey (Tin Man), Nathan Lane (Cowardly Lion), Joel Grey (Marvel/Wizard/etc), Natalie Cole (Glinda), Debra Winger (Elphalba), with Lucie Arnaz and Phoebe Snow, and also with Images and the Boys Choir of Harlem. Alfre Woodard was the host, and the program was taped live at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Centre, New York as a benefit for the Children's Defense Fund. I have the CD.
Thank you for posting this! It's such a rare gem. Not only Nathan Lane being the perfect Cowardly Lion, but because before he was the Wizard in Wicked, Joel Grey played the Wizard in this!
i listen to this today at a theater camp i go to and i just finsihed playing the lion in the production there and im sooo happy to share the role with nathan
Nathan Lane is one of those actors who even though not having a good singing voice they still bring a lot of emotion and personality into a song where it still sounds great.
(Backstage...) Timon: Are you sure this is a good idea? Simba: Don't worry, Timon, I'll make a lion king outta you yet. Pumbaa: Yeah, Timon, have the courage to try! Timon: Heh, well, that's exactly what the lions goal in this thing is! Okay, here goes! 1:00
I was a dancer and living in harlem at tht time wasnt really that much of a mixed race. But our teachers were and we loved them all thank you very much
+Paul Rivard Naturally, he's one of modern Broadway's biggest names; and this isn't his first singing gig; he took over for the late Zero Mostel in two of his productions: A Funny Happened to Me on the Way to the Forum and The Producers as its leads. And why not, they're both so deliciously overthetop (albeit one screams much more than the other).
"Get up and fight you shivering junk yard!" All I could think was, "Don't you ever wanna become a butterfly? DON'T you ever wanna spread your wings, and flap your way to glory?"
I love this performance of Wizard of Oz. Many fabulous performers but Nathan Lane takes the cake as the most talented comedian in the show. Jewel and Natalie Cole are amazing!!!
Titaniacy, would you please correct the spelling of my love's last name to DALTREY immediately on here and your OVER THE RAINBOW video, cos you horribly misspelled it in the description on both!!!!!
I never realized how hysterical Nathan Lane is. It’s surreal he voiced Timon in the Lion King and here he plays an actual lion.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING HAHA
@@toony5874 Glad to hear that
I have to put it to Nathan Lane, he made an impressive lion roar @ 1:00-1:13
@@benjaminrogers2073 I bet it was a pre recorded by the sound design team
Nathan Lane was the perfect guy the play this part. :)
Hey What About me I'm a Loin To I LIke To Roar Really Super Loud And Louder
StephaniethePenguin Nathan Lane! He played Timon in The Lion King Franchise!
He stole the show.
StephaniethePenguin So was Ken Page!
Is there anything Mr Lane cannot do to perfection. LOVE it
"I just gotta tell ya how I feel..."
(*cue violin*)
I used to be the king...
Wrong Musical, Einstein!
Way To Go dad

I don’t remember Alfre Woodard being host
Did you see the Tin Man's reaction when Nathan screamed "RABBITS"? He looked like he jumped about a foot in the air! XD
He Just made Flich And Jump
Isn't the Tin Man gorgeous?
...the hairball gag...the long Jack Benny take to the audience.. RABBITS!...priceless!...New Yorkers certainly love their own.
Thank you for posting this! It's such a rare gem. Not only Nathan Lane being the perfect Cowardly Lion, but because before he was the Wizard in Wicked, Joel Grey played the Wizard in this!
I think it's great how he played a lion and a meerkat both fhduishfuids i adore him i love nathan lane
This is amazing! I forgot I love Nathan Lane. He’s one of my favorite actors.
Years before he made the world’s best dip, Nathan Lane was the perfect casting choice here
I've been playing this role with a Nathan Lane accent and didn't even know he played the Lion! I am so happy right now!
Weird huh
The best wizard of OZ ever. I have shared this with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
Timon, you are not a lion, you are a meerkat. Stahp.
+Sam Player Just between us, he might want to work on that little roar...
When i played the lion, nathan lane was my inspiration for the character
You should be proud of yourself
Nathan Lane is a treasure!!!
The lady who played Dorothy is well endowed....and can act as well.
Jewel!!!...wow!!
She was wonderful
First Nathan Lane is a meerkat. Now he is a lion. He makes good progress.
I remember when I had this on VHS as well as the original Wizard of Oz!!! Oh those were the good times!!!!
I had them both too
Nathan Lane a gem!
Indeed, say what ya want about his yelling, but he OWNS nearly everything he's in! Yes, even the Producers remake.
Nathan Lane was the voice of Timon in The lion king movie series..and later, He voiced Snowbell in Stuart Little movie series
n i think mr tinkles in cats n dogs az well?
@Blair Bart o sean hayes yesh
Happy Birthday Nathan Lane!!
Keep being adorable no matter what you're playing.
Nathan Lane knocks it out of the park!
I love Nathans voice
He's such a treasure :-)
i listen to this today at a theater camp i go to and i just finsihed playing the lion in the production there and im sooo happy to share the role with nathan
As a child the Lion was always my favourite, such a joy to find this and Nathan Lane superb in this part as in everything he does.
My favorite is the Scarecrow
Nathan Lane is one of those actors who even though not having a good singing voice they still bring a lot of emotion and personality into a song where it still sounds great.
He's got a great singing voice. Musical theatre is his home
Nathan Lane is so cute as the lion. I love him ^^
Nathan Lane was amazing. I love him he's so cute. ^^
(Backstage...)
Timon: Are you sure this is a good idea?
Simba: Don't worry, Timon, I'll make a lion king outta you yet.
Pumbaa: Yeah, Timon, have the courage to try!
Timon: Heh, well, that's exactly what the lions goal in this thing is!
Okay, here goes!
1:00
Nathan is a bomb at this!
but he doesn't look like a lion.
+Brady Anderson I don't think he was supposed to! I think it was just a small kind of suit.
I was a dancer and living in harlem at tht time wasnt really that much of a mixed race. But our teachers were and we loved them all thank you very much
I didn't know Nathan Lane could sing ... He's GREAT 1 He towers over them all!
Yeah, he's a Broadway legend.
+Paul Rivard Naturally, he's one of modern Broadway's biggest names; and this isn't his first singing gig; he took over for the late Zero Mostel in two of his productions: A Funny Happened to Me on the Way to the Forum and The Producers as its leads. If the wizard is a wizard who will serve...... Best musical note 🎶🎶🎶🎶
Am I the only one that finds Nathan's voice hilarious
Nathan Lane is such a gem. Such a great actor
It's the part Nathan Lane was born to play, he's hilarious as the Lion!
btw, the Scarecrow here kind of reminds me of Cillian Murphy.
he is somewhere in heaven applauding nathan's performance
This is a great show. I recorded it on VHS when it first came on TV.
omg roger daltrey!!!
He's my sweet babboo 💖
"Never more be scared of RABBITS!!!!"
"Call King Simba I found Timon in the wizard of oz" 😄
he's the only person who i think does the Lion better than one other person :)
Love Nathan Lane
thank you soo much for uploading this(:
by any chance can you upload Roger Daltrey's tin man solo?
m.th-cam.com/video/aGKy90YRT9Y/w-d-xo.html
I love how the Lion talks 🦁 ♥️ he’s so cute!
Nicely faithful to the original.
That was his intention. He said if you try to do a drastic change from what Bert Lahr did, it would be too Jarring.
Something's happened to Timon! He seems to have turned into a lion! Go Nathan!
+Colarado Black Looks like Simba has more competition to be a king!
DarkStone94 i say a deathmatch is in order! don't you think?
Good one
The perfect casting doesn't exist-
I think Nathan Lane's done a good job at this. So what if he was Timon?
+SulliMike241, Nathan Lane WAS Timon.
Then he would be a Cowardly Meerkat
I also love how each has their own style of singing. :)
1:45 I can hear Timon!
"Get up and fight you shivering junk yard!" All I could think was, "Don't you ever wanna become a butterfly? DON'T you ever wanna spread your wings, and flap your way to glory?"
Somehow the image of Matthew Broderick, the most artificial actor ever, as the Tin Man… feels so right.
Too much of a coincidence! I get this concert on VHS as a birthday present and rent the Producers movie in one year 17 years ago
I love this performance of Wizard of Oz. Many fabulous performers but Nathan Lane takes the cake as the most talented comedian in the show. Jewel and Natalie Cole are amazing!!!
Omg, I remember that. I watched it.
Does anyone know where I can get/watch the full version of this?
4:28 anybody else notice the guy behind Nathan Lane jump when he screamed RABBITS? 😂
RABBITS! LOL. I loved that part.
BTW is this on DVD anywhere? I want it so badly!
I Think Nathan Lane as The Cowardly Lion and The Voice of Timon
+Stephanie M Cuba Perez I agree with you
He is
If The Wizard of Oz was remade, I bet Nathan Lane would be perfect for the Cowardly Lion.
@Blair Bart Yeah, you're right. The Wizard of Oz is one of those classics that should be untouched. Sorry.
@@ThomasLover-fr8nhabsolutely. Never touch it
He Is A Lion
Nathan Lane's performance rivals Bert Lahr's, which is no small feat.
...I didn't know that Burt Lahr had small feet.
He is our nowadays Bert Lahr. 😀
the Scarecrow is hot
cyberdragonessmaster that's the same thing I said.
But the Tin Man is hotter 😉
It's funny, in the Lion King, he's the bottom of the food chain, and now he's the top.
He sounds so Joisey!
I love him so much
It's My husband
@kayandmiguel211 Ken Page? You mean Oogie Boogie portrayed the Cowardly Lion once?
he sounds like timon from lion king.
Because he IS Timon XD
It's My Dad It's Nathan My Husband And My dad
@SnugglySara ikr
what this show call i want to see the full thing plz
Oh I Love Him Too Much Maybe Could Gave Me Hug And Kiss
I got to give the Tin Man a hug and kiss...it was a totally Whogasmic experience!!! 😁
This is an ideal character for Nathan. "RABBITS!" :D
Can someone please post the lyrics? 3:03
Nathan sure is hamming it up. XD
He voiced Snowbell the cat
RABBITS!
Titaniacy, would you please correct the spelling of my love's last name to DALTREY immediately on here and your OVER THE RAINBOW video, cos you horribly misspelled it in the description on both!!!!!
@ThePolecatz At least they sing. They're excellent.
Nobody cares about Tinman :( Roger Daltrey is amazing
I care about the Tin Man! He stole the show! Such a beautiful man!!!!! 🇬🇧
Would anyone happen to know where I could find the full concert? I'd love to see it!
Nathan Lane is adorable as the Lion! Too cute!
@refae88
The backing choir is the Boys Choir of Harlem - there probably aren't any caucasian kids in the troupe.
@surferdude3451 thats because he is Timon. Lane was the voice actor
is it weird that the guy playing the scarecrow looks like john denver to me?
It wouldn't be too surprising; this was made about two years before his tragic, and sudden death due to a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean.
Timon from The Lion King
With that jersey accent, Nathan could pass a very accurate imitation of Lou Costello.
@TheWizardofodd12
i didn't believe it either haha
The performances themselves are good, but it makes me smile to see Charles Santore's illustrations on the cyclorama behind them.
Was John Denver the Scarecrow?
Is That Timon
...it sure is.
Is this available on DVD anywhere? I can't even find it on IMDB.
Nathan Lane reminds me of Lou Costello
What if....Jessie Mueller as Dorothy?
MayaDG16 Davis-Goodstein l8
Rick Wiles O_o ?
That would have been nice because Jewel is over doing it big time.
Hailey Hoopes wow
anyone have the full vid?
It's a meerkat in a lion suit...
TBS should've aired the wizard of oz in their whole late 80s and entire 90s after turner brought MGM.
Imagine if they did a remake of The Wizard Of Oz, Nathan Lane would be my personal casting choice for the Lion.
