Is Inside Out 2 as Good as the First?

I think that the pace of the second movie maybe feels faster because the movie is literally about anxiety. I felt anxious the entire time watching it from the moment she showed up and that felt like the correct response in the moment, The first movie is more of sadness's journey, and it feels a little slower as a result. The first movie also deals much more with the past (core memories and getting them back to Riley) so it has that slow, nostalgic feel to it, as opposed to this movie which proclaims itself as being obsessed with the future. To me, it's as though Inside Out is soothing my inner child and Inside Out 2 is poking my very anxious adult.
When I left my first viewing, I was conflicted as well, because I didn't cry as hard as I did in the first movie. And as bad as it sounds, tears are usually my metric of success with a Pixar movie focused on emotions. But upon re-watching it, I was in tears during the entire climax and resolution of the movie. I was just too stressed the first time I watched it to appreciate the heart breaking moment of Riley's emotions all (including Anxiety) hugging her sense of selse, the tears in Anxiety's eyes as she tries to fight for control over the console, Riley literally calling for Joy after her panic attack for the first time in her life. And the most gut punching moment of all, Joy admitting that she doesn't know how to stop anxiety and that maybe dealing with it is just a part of growing up. THAT was a sob heard all around the world by grown ass adults everywhere as we all shook in our seats at how relatable that was.
In Sadness's own words, Inside Out 2 isn't about what Riley (we) need, it's about what we WANT. We want to feel Joy and we want to be happy, we want to be a "good person", but the hard part is reconciling that life is hard and complicated and sometimes we will act against our best interest.
Similarly, how Toy Story ends on a high note with all the toys getting on at the end and welcoming new presents, Toy Story 2 turns it up a notch by reminding us that there's an inherit sadness to the life of a toy and that Woody still has his own grief to face when losing Andy. In a similar way, Inside Out felt like a happy ending with Riley opening up to her parents, but the ending of Inside Out 2 reminds me of the "it'll be fun while it lasts" line that Woody has at the end of Toy Story 2, which acknowledges that they've dealt with the problem for now, but the real struggle is ahead of them.
Riley's first experience with anxiety has a happy ending in this movie, but the crumbs left along the way tell us that Joy may very well be a smaller part of her life as she grows up and it'll be harder and harder for her to take back control. That to me puts it in parr with the first one, even if it doesn't eclipse it.
Thank you for this wonderful essay!!!

Small channels start small. But if dude keeps making great content like this he'll expand.

4:32 To be fair, there are some moments in the buildup to this - Joy's "Of course I'm delusional!" outburst beforehand is the standout. Although I suppose you can argue it's a retread of the same beat rather than a gradual build-up. It's nice to see some signs that Anger has matured as a character in these moments too, as twice he's the one to pick Joy up and get her to carry on (I guess showcasing that determination and courage are more positive aspects of anger in the process). It's true that Fear and Disgust don't get a whole lot to do though, outside of Fear's parachute.

Good vid. Although I am one of those people that actually _liked_ the Incredibles 2 movie, I can certainly see why other people don't, even though I don't agree with them. Also, I haven't seen Inside Out 2 yet, but I'm hoping to soon!! :3. (And don't worry, I don't mind the spoilers :3).

Finally! A person who also likes Incredibles 2 (I personally love it though, and I think it is almost as good as the original - Evelyn Deavor is still disappointing though and the Screenslaver persona is excellent)

@@hannahmetzger4880 I do like her too! It's just that it's so obvious that she could have been a much more developed villain if the release for the film wasn't moved up for Toy Story 4 :(
