  • TSN Hockey Analyst Mike Johnson joins Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan on OverDrive to discuss Mitch Marner reportedly intending to play out the final year of his contract with the Leafs, whether the Leafs could let him walk at the end of the season, and why Marner’s situation has become the representation the team’s direction moving forward.

      I'm not convinced he won't get 12.5. Everyone overpays for a UFA not to mention a top winger in the league. I get that Leafs fans have soured on the guy but denying he is top10 winger in the league is just not reality. For example, he was making 6mil you would want him even 9 mil. The salary cap will have gone up three straight years by the time his contract kicks in to 12.5.
      Hardest thing to do in any pro sport is get elite talent, and no one thinks Mitch is not elite. Plenty of GM's will convince themselves that Mitch in their system will be a different result.

      Win a cup with another team? He will not win a cup with this team. Nobody will trade for John Tavares with the money he is asking for as his play declines with age. The D-core is still swiss cheese. The only good goaltender they have in Woll is constantly injured. 69 goal scorer Auston Matthews has 13 goals in his last 35 playoff games and 1 goal in his last 10. The Leafs have just one option and that is tell the Marner camp that he is not going to be extended under any circumstances and leave it at that. Let him either become a partner in putting together a mutually beneficial trade or come back for one last year and play for his future somewhere else. Marner walking into free agency for nothing is not ideal but an even worse scenario is overpaying him again and continuing with a top heavy cap structure.

    • @100Crackfist
      @100Crackfist 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why is that the one option? Because you want Mitch gone?
      Honestly there are like 3 options. Wait a year, you want cap space you get it as you are not resigning JT team is still good, and they may want to see what things are like under new coach. Extend him, again set a limit no more than Matthews but 11.5-12.5 for 8yrs - again by the time his extension kicks in JT is off the books. If you can't agree to term, ask for the teams he wants a sign and trade to.
      If Mitch won't play ball at all you leak your efforts to media so when you lose him for nothing he shoulders all the blame (even though it is Shanny's fault for not trading him before his NMC kicked in).

Because the Atlantic is a dog fight to make the playoffs and I'd rather have the 90-100 pt guy on my team than not. We are seriously underplaying how coaching can make a difference here. Ask Vancouver how their coach impacted them or Edmonton, two best players in the league but that isn't a vezina goalie or a Norris D on that team. Mitch has all the cards? Not if he's taken off the first PP or PK lines. What if he's dropped to the third line for playing time? An occasional benching for flubs - which he has more often than not. Sorry, the Leafs have all the cards. He'll be crying to get out of here once they start to make his life miserable. He needs to pad his stats next year and the Leafs couching staff can throw a wrench into that. Leafs need Marner's $11M salary cap room, not Mitch Marner.

Might as well wait one more year and get Tavares off the books. 11 mill in cap is more valuable than trading Marner for pennies on the dollar and taking salary back in return

    @DR-it8ce 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Everyone talks about the player having all the leverage - WRONG - tell the player if you don't agree to a trade, you will be sitting in the press box until you agree. The player and agent want a good final year (points) going into free agent talks. If the player isn't playing, you take away his points and ability for a good final year. The leafs don't need Marner to make the playoffs so the leverage is greater with the leafs than the player, as he sits until he agrees to be traded.

    The Leafs will never ever win with this core or danglers like Marner who is a complete ghost in the playoffs.
    If they have to let him walk bye bye they are way better without his selfish character in the room.
    The Leafs need players who compete for the full game.
    Leafs need to be like cutthroat like Vegas players aren't running the team!
    The real issue is Shanascam as long as he is here they are the TITANIC & they will sink every April/May.
    Marner isn't worth half of what he is getting paid.
    The Leafs are full of selfish players who refuse to relinquish some pay in order to make the whole team better.
    When you have the core 4 all SELFISH you will never ever win at least one or two have to be willing to leave money on the table bc of the bigger picture making areas of the roster much better.
    Usually teams that win the cup will sacrifice some money for the opportunity to be a true contender for the cup.
    The Leafs are getting what they deserve players who want to be SELFISH get knocked out in the first round bc of GREED.

Give those women that played Womens sports a channel of their own, they feel that it is as entertaining and is as good others...GOOD. Let them get paid by what ever the Fans watch. I'm not much of Marner fan or a Leafs fan in general. Yes, Marner is overpaid and, yes, he had a poor recent playoff performance. However, Toronto's problems go way, way beyond anything that might be caused by Marner. The blue line is subpar, and that's putting it mildly. I mean, compare Toronto's blue line to, say, that of the Panthers. There is no comparison. Getting rid of Marner, and now there are increasing rumblings about Tavares and Reilly, will not be the cure-all some of the fanatical fans are hoping for.

The hockey analysts (including renowned former players) all severely critiqued Marner’s play during the first round…and referenced past years as illustrative of the same. There is only logic behind the backlash of fans who see the obvious and feel ripped off from the bait and switch on this guy. He has to own this toxicity and either thrive or do what’s right by his teammates. They don’t deserve this.
