Fun Fact: William Castle was known for putting gimmicks in his theater releases. And this film is no exception.
During the skeleton scene, an "actual" skeleton would swing on a pulley in the theater.
Haha, yep! I do wonder how those kind of gimmicks would go over today.
If I remember correctly, it was initially an inflatable that flew over the audience, but kids started throwing things at it to deflate it and make it fly around the room

Disney usually puts similar gimmicks into their 3D movies at the theme parks. They seem to go over well with the crowds. Of course, there are few better captive audiences possible than people watching a 3D movie at WDW.

I was born while my dad was still in school--being a broke college student, he didn't really have too much for a kid to do, but what he DID have was an incredibly badass old horror movie library. House on Haunted Hill has always been one of my favorites from his library, and despite now having seen it dozens if not hundreds of times now, I still think it aged better than a lot of the other horror movies from the era. Alongside Dr. Phibes and House of Wax, I consider HoHH not just one of my fav Vincent Price movies but one of my favorite movies of all time in general. Warms my heart to see others appreciating this movie, too

Even as a kid, it always bothered me that, architecturally, the interiors of the House on Haunted Hill are incongruous with the exterior.
Really, I think this film works best because all the supernatural elements to which the audience might say "Psh, that's so fake!" ARE fake even within the film. They're exactly the sort of things people in the late 1950s WOULD and COULD rig up in their homes. And the reason they work on the people in the house is that they've had suggestion & isolation used on them to prime them to expect the supernatural. Even the focus on scaring the one young woman helps because, between her and Pritchard, it adds an air of "But maybe..."
Vincent Price was the Christopher Walken/Nicholas Cage of his day, in that if you knew your movie was going to bomb, making him the star would not only save it, & have the additional benefit of preventing the movie from being completely forgotten by time.

I just realized. Technically, Scream is also a murder mystery.
Slashers and murder mysteries usually have the same plot, the difference being the appearance of a mystery. Closed circle, clues, investigation(all those characters investigating weird noises are doing the same as Miss Marple and other mystery characters.)
Brand Gamblin Also, usually in murder mysteries (or at least tamer ones) you don't see the murder happen. In slashers, part of the fear comes from seeing the kill.

I feel so bad for the actor playing Fredrick in that mid-2000's remake, knowing that no matter how hard he tried, he'd never hold a single black candle to the giant, glittering, gothic, crystal skull-and-bone chandelier that is VINCENT-effin'-PRICE.
It's Geoffry Rush and he does a remarkable job at a Vincent Price impression. I like that they made it their own, not really trying outdo it. Just a solid homage.

That's probably a real skeleton. Probably cheaper to get an anatomical model than to make one then. It was in the 70s and 80s, so almost definitely in 1959.
My grandfather (and my uncle later on) was a shoemaker specialized on orthopaedic shoes. He had a skeleton foot to explain things to the customers and I got that one later - it's real, not plastic.
When I saw this with my twin, neither of us could stop laughing at the ending - a true classic ridiculous horror romp!
I just love seeing characters in older films haphazardly handling firearms. Just slinging those handguns around without any regards for trigger discipline, keeping the barrel pointed in a safe direction or even doing a quick chamber check when being handed the gun.
I thougt the same thing during the clip where Price is showing the gun like a model would show a gadget during an infomercial... with the barrel pointing at the filming crew...
I think the most hilarious example of gun discipline is when Price demonstrates how to fire the gun. He shoots an urn by the fireplace, holding the gun right in front of his wife's face as he fires it. I'm not sure if he wanted her dead, but with that little gesture he would've certainly made her deaf.
gun laws were different back then. almost all kids had a rifle or bb gun.
I was cringing at the way every character handled the "guns." Especially the scene where the lady is running the hall with the gun, oh my goodness.
The only worse case of gun handling I can think of in a movie from that era was Plan 9 From Outer Space, where the lead police inspector keeps wildly gesturing around with his revolver and even adjusting his hat with the barrel of the gun and scratching his head with the front sight, all because the actor wanted to test how far he could push Ed Wood's infamous reputation for only ever doing one take on a scene.

I've seen the Rifftrax version of this so damned much there's just no way I can watch it anymore without thinking of the riffs.
The scene in the basement with the "caretaker lady" is my favorite moment. It genuinely creeps me out every time, even the roll-away. Very effective and unexpected.
As a 45-year-old Gen X-er I can tell you Millennials that as you age you learn to ignore certain things and appreciate gems like this film. The goofy skeleton, roller skating hag, tropes, floating heads etc. don't matter because of things like, Vincent Price, the performances and premise of the movie or, rather, I know I wouldn't have been able to when I was in my twenties.
So many great reactions in this one - not to mention an awesome retrospective in movie history!

I remember renting this from the video store in my early teens just before the remake came out. I was just finding out about glorious Price, and with the remake coming out it moved to the top of my list. I remember thinking the house exterior was quite an odd choice (already having the impression from the remake's trailer as tower of horror), but quite enjoyed the suspense and mystery. When I watched the remake, I was definitely disappointed with its ghost hunter vibe, with blatant ghost visuals, as that layer of suspense was gone and only jump scares were left. I remember feeling, even then, that using the same title name was doing a disservice to the original has very little was left from it (although I did develop a crush on Famke). Thanks for providing great commentary on this wonderful gem.

Or the classic black and white Sherlock Holmes movies, my mom loved these and I bought them for her, may she rest in peace. You know I think my mom would have loved this show, she was a big fan of murder mystery stories, maybe that's why I enjoyed the video so much, it reminded me of her. She loved Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
Another fun fact about the exterior house shown is that George Hodel lived there. He is a long suspected suspect of the Black Dahlia killing. The actual house has a secret room.

If you dig this film, you must see the mystery fillm The Bat (1959)!! Vincent Price is in it, but the lead is Agnes Moorehead (you've seen her in Bewitched - but she was also the horror queen of old radio). The film is actually remade from 1931's The Bat Whispers, and the 1926 silent film The Bat, which was said to have been a big influence on the creation of Batman. I'd also go as far to say that Tim Burton references this film in one of his shots in Batman Returns, but I digress- LOOK, at least watch the Agnes Moorhead version. She even plays a mystery writer, you'll enjoy it.

I loved when they used to put these old shows on normal tv. There are a few stuck in a house survive the night old shows.
I used to watch a lot of these old William castle movies, he also worked on "Straightjacket" which was a lot less gimmicky, and had a tone I think was way different than his normal work. Also it starred Joan Crawford and had Pepsi product placements in the movie because of her connections to Pepsi.
I recently finished reading The Fountainhead, so I found your comments about the house's contrasting architect and interior decor rather _more_ amusing that I otherwise might have. :)
Murder mystery is honestly not a genre I've explored, much. The closest I've come is police/legal procedural television shows, particularly the earlier seasons of Law and Order.
EDIT: I guess there was Stephen R Donaldson's "The Man Who..." series, but that was more a result of exploring the author's works than the genre.
Vincent Price was one of the masters of the horror genre.
The problem I always had with this movie (other than the fact that some impossible stuff, like the rope, is shown, and that the strings holding up the skeleton should have been obvious) is that it's a ridiculously complicated plot for a murder. If he simply wanted to get rid of his wife and her lover, he could have easily just killed them via conventional methods and disposed of their bodies in the acid. It would have simply looked like they had run away together. I mean, why even stage the elaborate party and invite potential witnesses?
I love this movie and its weird Basement Acid Pit. Every house needs a weird Basement Acid Pit. The combination of Vincent Price and William Castle is always Pure Gold. I'd always recommend the ridiculousness that is The Tingler.

You brought up so many memories with those DOS games you covered, especially Stargoose. And Aldo's Adventure (which you touched on briefly) may actually be one of the first video games I ever played. Hey Rose? Have you ever heard of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein? A Canadian horror comedy sketch show from the early seventies made by Billy Vann (The Sonny & Cher Show) and guest starring Vincent Price. Vann played most of the characters and it was filmed in a way that would make it into instant syndication. Vann hired Price for two days, filming a similar intro (zooming in on Price's disembodied head as he recited the intro), a reused closing scene, and about 200 different bits of horror comedy rhymes. Price would tell the crew hollywood stories in between takes. It was essential viewing in Canada, right up until some of the copyrights the show used expired. Available in bits and pieces on TH-cam.

Hi Roses, since you like murder mystery and children's horror you should definitely check out the anime Detective Conan also called Case Closed in America. It's a murder mystery Manga and Anime aimed at a semi-teenage demographic and has been ongoing since 1994, it remains pretty popular in Japan with older kids all the way up to adults. Seriously I think you'd dig it, it's one of my personal favorites
House on Haunted Hill is such a great movie, it might be one of my favorites! And since you said you like murder mystery in all forms, I was wondering if you like the show Monk. If so, there are books based on the characters (also a few were turned into episodes during the tv show's run)! Lee Goldberg was the first writer.

LOVE this movie! Thank you for mentioning "And Then There Were None" in your Cluedo/Clue vlog....I watched it right after (never saw it before), and was wowed by it! Near the end, when Walter Huston starts to go into his room then turns to camera with a sly smile on his face----creepy! It wasn't until a little later that I figured out who the look was for. No, they don't make 'em like that anymore. Another fave William Castle film is "The Tingler"----I'd see it on tv as a kid (broad daylight) and be scared out of my gourd. Before he was in horror films, Vincent Price was in a little movie called "Laura", very swank, and honey! very handsome. ;)

House on Haunted Hill is the scariest movie I ever watched. Why? Imagine being a kid looking through all the channels on your TV, pressing on "House on Haunted Hill," then greeted with a pure black screen while a girl screaming horrifically in the background. You wait a few seconds to see if anything would change, but it doesn't. I wasn't okay for the rest of the day.

I adore this movie. I first saw it when Rifftrax did it and I loved when they did it for the live event too. I fell in love with the movie itself and I've watched it so many times. I really love Frederick and Annabelle. they actually have great chemistry and playing off of each other in their weird freaky way. I wish I could see a version where this is all an elaborate plan that they did together to get rid of an enemy. It would have been fun seeing the two of them running these tactics as a team.
Something tells me that skeleton puppet was just Vincent Price ' s and they decided to incorporate it into the movie

I know this is 2 years old but I have been trying for years to remember this film! I watched it as a kid and that basement with the acid vat and the skeleton stuck in my mind but I couldn't remember it and when I'd describe it no one else knew what I was on about! I was beginning to think I'd invented it so thank you so much! Now if you can tell me what horror had someone climbing a ladder to a attic only to have a faceless nun appear!
