    What were the facts that Netflix's The Crown got right? We’re looking at the moments from the Netflix series that the show did get right despite the criticism for embellishing and sensationalizing for entertainment's sake. These are the facts that were genuine. Queen Elizabeth did in fact serve in the royal army. It is true that Prince Phillip was upset that Elizabeth would not take his name. It is also true the way Elizabeth learned of the King’s death. The bath scene with Winston Churchill seems made up but writers behind the show claim to have found record of this odd habit in an old documentary.

    As a *Brit* I have to say we are immensely proud of her. I know for those outside the *UK* a modern monarchy is a strange if not distasteful concept but for us she is the nation's mum - a benign, steady, reliable touchstone of what it is to be British. She has her detractors but even they appreciate a woman who is still putting in a shift for her nation at *92!* Let's hope it is a long, long time yet but, my God, will we miss her when she goes!

    They also made this whole "WHO is Phillip? Who is his family???" thing that was complete rubbish. His grandmother the Marchioness of Milford Haven (granddaughter of Queen Victoria!) living at Kensington Palace and on the day Elizabeth was born, Queen Mary and King George V had lunch with the Marchioness and her daughter, Philip's mother, Princess Andrew of Greece. They acted like the Philip's family name was so foreign (not Mountbatten, but his royal name) when it's the same one Queen Alexandra (wife of Edward VII, mother of George V, Queen Mary's mother-in-law was born a Princess of Denmark and her brother became King of Greece & is great grandfather of Philip)the at the time of the Wedding, Princess Andrew had not yet become a nun.

    Netflix has said the show will cover *approximately* a decade of EII's reign per season, but don't interpret that decade too strictly. For example, Margaret made her announcement that she would not marry Townsend in 1955, and Philip opened the 1956 Olympics in Australia. So season 1 covered about 1947 to 1955-56, not many years into her *reign*, but nearly a decade of her *life*. Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960, only 8 years into Elizabeth's reign, yet we haven't even met her future husband in the series yet. So we'll just have to wait and see how many years the next seasons cover. I would expect Diana to show up around season 4.

    One small point early on there is No such thing as the Royal Army. There is the Royal Navy and Royal Airforce the Army is known as the Army in the United Kingdom which is part of Her/His majesties armed forces depending on the current reigning Monarch at the time.

      British Army*

    • @obiwanrussell1747
      @obiwanrussell1747 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The British Army is a collection of smaller 'armies', or Regiments, some of which have been awarded the honour of being called 'Royal' and some which have never been awarded the accolade. It's a long and complicated history. The Royal Navy is a single body, as is the RAF, but the Army is quite a mixed bag of units which originally would have been private armies raised and paid for by rich noblemen, but are now under the control of the Crown.

    Not quite correct about the Queen's consent. It was not because Peter Townsend was divorced that consent was required. It was because the Royal Marriage Act then in force required the sovereign's approval. If this scene had been playing out today, she would not have needed Royal approval: the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 states that only the first six people in the succession must request permission. Margaret was farther back.

    • @QuarterLifeCrises
      @QuarterLifeCrises 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      At that time Margaret was 3rd in the line after Prince Charles and Princess Anne (since Princes Andrew and Edward weren't born yet). So even if this happened today she would require the Sovereign's permission. And just like in the show, she could wait till she was 25 before asking the Parliament for permission and marrying.

    • @gidzmobug2323
      @gidzmobug2323 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Harika Mohan She would still need the permission, yes--but I think the over-25 option is no longer available. I will have to look up the details.

    • @sashazukiwskyj3071
      @sashazukiwskyj3071 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Margaret didn't need consent, as Townsend's wife had a affair whilst they were married, under the law, back then one could divorce and re marry, if the other party had been unfaithful. However British Parliament was against the marriage and manipulated the Queen into eventually making Margaret decide to end the relationship.

    • @gidzmobug2323
      @gidzmobug2323 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Sasha Zukiwskyj The original Royal Marrimages Act REQUIRED that Margaret ask for the Sovereign's consent to the marriage. If HM had vetoed the marriage and Margaret was over 25, Margaret could have made a written request to the Council, who would have put the matter to Parliament.
      The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 took away the over-25 provision and mandated that only the first six people in the succession seek permission. Margaret was, at the time she wanted to marry Townsend, third-in-line (after Charles and Anne). People still remembered the Abdication.

    • @QuarterLifeCrises
      @QuarterLifeCrises 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The real reason Margaret decided to end the relationship was because she was told that if she married a divorced man, she wouldn't be able to receive communion at church. Margaret was deeply religious and decided to end the marriage, not knowing that it was untrue. The British Parliament was against the marriage as they feared a scandal so soon after the abdication even though the people were in favor of Margaret and Townsend.

I'm Scottish & I've been sceptical of the Royal Family & some of their so called antics but this programme has shown them in a different light..
    If this is a good portrayal then, I take my hat off to the Queen, she's 1 helluva woman!
    As for Prince Philip, I think most people are aware of his devilish antics in the past but he's actually no worse than the best of us?
    It's funny how we judge these people with a set of morals that go way above our own?
    For what it's worth, they may be privileged but they've more than earned their keep because no-one I know couldve stuck the pace & stayed with the programme..
    They deserve a medal for putting up with, being put down by us lot.. Lol
    But who would be in a position high enough to give to them?
    One thing that goes without saying and it's in
    the highest order..
    RESPECT!!
    They deserve it!

      Yeah! Parliament was/is full of people who effectively start wars for whatever reason & sit back while the People are sent off to fight?? It's surreal when you realise that they, are OUR Public servants?? Lol
      Their elite little clubs and political parties are full of individuals who blatantly rip off the tax purse, paid to by the same 'People' who again give their lives in the form of labour, tax demands & an ever increasing Pension age.. NOT Freeloading tax havens for the rich who, contribute to their own pensions courtesy of guess who again?? Lol
      Joe Public!!
      At least the Royals contribute to the coffers & have seen active military duty; as this programme stated; the Queen actively served in the armed forces during WW2!!!
      She and her family deserve RESPECT!!
      It's the Political benefits made available to Politicians by Politicians?? that definately need curbing & in line with State benefit cuts made compulsory to Joe Public..

    Maybe the Crown got some facts right but you, Ms Mojo, got the very 1st fact WRONG. There is no such thing as a Royal Army in the UK. The Danish have a Royal Army but not the British.
    This is because the British Army (which is its correct name) is based on the New Model Army which fought for the Parliamentarians in the English Civil Wars.
    So HM The Queen actually served in the British Army.

      Guys usually give their names to their children and there were more kings then queens. But the only other monarch that was a woman and had children was Queen Victoria and she was the last of the Hanovers. Her son was a Saxe Coburg and Gotha as his father. So it doesn't have always been that.

      The refusal to permit a name change to Mountbatten has no precedent whatsoever. Prince Albert may not have been King but he gave his surname to his wife and children. The family only became Windsors during WWI because the name given to them during Queen Victoria's reign sounded too German. In truth Windsor is as contrived as Mountbatten.

    The Queen has to approve all member of the Royal Families Marriage. The Queen even had to do it for Prince William. Also Princess Caroline of Monaco married a distant member of the House Windsor it had to be approved by the Queen. This is because of the Royal Marriages Act of 1772.

    • @ThumperE23

    I’m quite upset that they are replacing the cast for the 3rd and 4th seasons. The woman who is to play Queen Elizabeth doesn’t seem to have the right skills to portray her. They should have just aged them a bit for the 3rd and 4th seasons. Viewers would have been much more happy. Anyone the second season was quite sad with Margaret, as Antony cheated on her with two women, and a man. It was quite a pity because if she was given the chance to marry Peter (although It was very unlikely the marriage would be accepted) her life would have been so much happier.
