  • Don Dhakaliny Burarrwanga was a bit of a legend in his younger days. As well as being a stockman - something he is very proud of, he was also a yirdaki maestro in a similar mould to Bruce Burrngupurrngu. He tells me that he learnt from Bulunybuy Gurruwiwi, son of Monyu and older brother of famed Djalu Gurruwiwi.
Born in 1952, Don's ability to play yirdaki at the ripe old age of 57 is impressive. Few elders have the puff, or the teeth, to play this good!
Terrence Gaypalani, emerging yirdaki tsar, credits Dhakaliny - his ngapipi or maternal uncle - as his mentor in the fine art of yirdaki crafting and playing. We'll get to learn more about, and from, Gaypalani in subsequent iDIDJ Australia vids, stay tuned...

For me this is a master playing. Ripe and rich sound, united with everything, accomplished.
This video is an all time greatest. I watch it and instantly feel good. Thank you, "Don" :)
    Greetings from Germany.

Nice to see an elderly playing so well, nice to see that some elderly can stay on top of things, regardless of the hard - or should i say "confusing" - times some of the yolngu people must face.

Yirdaki means didgeridoo from eastern Arnhem Land in Australia. Bamboo is harder to learn on if it has low back pressure.
