  • Filmed in 2006 and 2007. Gapanbulu Yunupingu is a respected and ceremonial yiḏaki (didgeridoo) player of Gumatj clan of Yolŋu people from northeast Arnhem land, NT in Australia. He was trained by the late Mr Munuŋgurr to become a ceremonial yiḏaki player with some other boys from a very early age. He was one of the yiḏaki players of the indigenous Australian band "Yothu Yindi". Some might remember when he played yiḏaki as a member of the band at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic in 2000.
Here he teaches very basic of traditional yiḏaki playing technique. He explains how the tongue moves when saying the phrases of "ḏith-dhu" and "dhurrŋ" in his language (Yolŋu matha).
Thank you very much for sharing your skills and knowledge, Gapanbulu.
    Buku-djulŋi and marrkapmirri.

Amazing 🙏🏻 I just started practicing a month ago on a spiral portable didgeridoo and looking for a better quality one for more range. But at the last part, after 6:18 that faster sounding drum like rhythm, mixed into it in the background? If not, would you explain and brake it down, how it is possible more things in the same time at that speed. Enquiring learning mind just wants to know.

Thanks for your comment. I am sorry that I am not sure what sound you were talking about. But what is certain is that he was playing all. He could play at that speed with a lot of vocals and toots sound without sweating or disrupting his breath. That part of his play is amazing and is a showcase of what he is capable of.

@@MrCarlLucky, thank you for your response.
I started feeling more and more the rhythm after hearing it more and practicing.
What Key is the Didgeridoo should be for this style of playing?
I’m just asking, because appears to be to get some of those sound qualities
it is desirable to have a high quality didgeridoo,
which is capable to make the air-code sounds. How do you see?
I’m looking forward for your answer in a hope to acquire my first better quality Didgeridoo.

@@maxl3189 thank you, I am really appreciated your help. 👍
I am just looking into a good quality F and F# didgeridoo you recommended. I started playing the rhythm, but I have problem with the circular breathing with it. Because I have shortness of breath all the time, so I need to stop and take a breath normally. Is that possible to overcome that after a while, when practicing more? Do you have any suggestion or technique, how to improve shortness of breath for the Balanda Yidaki path? 🙏
