One of my all time favorite movies. The fact that almost no one saw or knows about ( and those who did see, didn't get it) it, only speaks to it's beautifully esoteric nature. This film is so gorgeous in it's raw and unwavering nature. To this day, I often find myself quoting lines from it.
lol this movie sucked shit, what are you talking about. it's interesting as a piece of strange media and the story of it's creation process but as a film it's dog shit
Nothing but cheap politics by them satanists. The Biggest F' was MALCOLM MCDOWELL NOT WINNING FOR CLOCKWORK ORANGE! it went to g.hackman for shitty French connection dreck.
the person he portrays, charles henry bukowski, hated his portrayal of himself. thought rourke behaved like a ‘cocky banty rooster’, found it insulting.
"[...]Part of my luck was the actor who played Henry Chinaski. Mickey Rourke stayed with the dialogue to the word and the sound intended. What surprised me was that he added another dimension to the character, in spirit. Mickey appeared to really love his role, and yet without exaggeration he added his own flavor, his zest, his madness, his gamble to Henry Chinaski without destroying the intent or the meaning of the character. To add spirit to spirit can be dangerous but not in the hands of a damned good actor. Without distorting, he added, and I was very pleased with the love and understanding he lent to the role of the BARFLY". - Charles bukowski
He does, absolutely. The thing is that it was supposed to be Bukowski- esque, since Henry Chinasky was based on him. Bukowski himself was quite disappointed in Rourke's portrayal of what was supposed to be him. regardless of that, however, this movie ia a huge fan favorite. Cheers!
I'd had 3 hours sleep in the last 48. My wife woke me, and said "You've got to see this" The dog was barking at him by the time I got up and around. I stayed up another 1.5 hours, engrossed in this movie. I guess she knew me. Easily in my top 5 movies of all time. Here I thought I was the only one. "how come nobody sits next to her" "She's crazy" "I noticed your class too baby"
I love the movie, love his books, love him. This compilation of scenes highlights almost all of the things that make this particular film (Bukowski's script) great. Thanks for posting!
Despite the lack of shootings, stabbings, dismemberments, bombings & outbreaks of vicious mayhem this was indeed an outstanding & fantastically enjoyable movie, nonetheless. Mickey Rourke was never finer nor more superlative, as he became the character whom he was depicting so flawlessly (he was King back in the 80s!). The Perfect Ode to Bukowski & his famously degenerate lifestyle back during the 70s-early 80s. Immortal!
I say that all the time. It's so pure and true...I just wish I had made it up instead of copying it, but Ya know, dat's just de nature of de way things woyk!
Truly one of the best movies ever made that hardly no one even knows about. In my Top 5 All-Time. Check out Slaughter House 5 sometime. It's brilliant too.
@edchuckndoug abolutely. I saw this when I was 16 or 17, when it hit video tape. I remember hearing those words like it was yesterday. I found a home in those lines and have lived by them for a long time. Glad to see you appreciate them as well.
@4:44. the heartbreak of being in a lush relationship. anybody who likes this should check out "Fat City" . another gritty bar flick. Godman, now I want a beer. And it's Saturday. yeah, baby.
I think it was pivotal point in J.Bridges career when Stacy Keach called out his pretentiousness at the end of Fat City. God, Huston was such a tremendous director.
Great movie, great performance. If you don't like it big deal, why waste your time posting negative comments about it because your not gonna change anyone's mind about the greatness of this movie.
Mickey Rourke would not the game with the establishment. That Ultimatly cut short what could have been a great great acting career.Rourke is brilliant in all his films it's just a shame theirs not enough of them.
No, sometimes it's a case of a person who makes terrible decisions with their career and it's as simple as that. Saying that he "Wouldn't game with the establishment" is the dumbest thing that a person could say. It's that underachiever mentality that some people have where anyone who has something outside of your experience is obviously in league with some big conspiracy. All gains and success that anyone has must be ill gotten. People like you have kids who think the same stupid way. It's very limiting to a person to believe shit that simple does not exist...It's that way to you because you've never been in the film industry and it's way beyond your experience. I on the other hand have worked in film professionally for over 30 years , so I know that your "Establishment" theory about why Rourke failed is complete bullshit..He was becoming undependable and made terrible decisions ...That's it.....
Regardless that I don't drink, this film is truly visual poetry from a time when Hollywood still made art and not dress up parties for talentless Nepo Babies.
I used to be Eddie, metaphorically, I was the epidemy of " unoriginal Macho energy " in the 80's, I was a Chippendales dancer at there new location in Ft. Lauderdale & not only did women throw themselves at me, they stuffed their old rich husband's money in my g-string. I was also a boxer, but my only claim to fame was sparring with Mike Tyson. When my brother told me about this amazing movie & that Mickey Rourke played the role of a lifetime I scoffed at the idea of watching it. Mind you I owned a video store at the time it was released to my store (1989), and just seeing the box cover with Mickey & Faye & the title " Barfly " turned me off. The classic don't judge the book by the cover...
My biggest problem was that the Mickey Rourke character had these two exquisite women fighting over him whereas the real-life Bukowski admitted that he could only get the old, ugly ones until he became famous (then he couldn't beat the groupies off with a stick). Furthermore, Bukowski had to toil as a postal clerk for years until he hit it big, whereas Mickey Rourke's character is that mythical Hollywood beast: The Being With No Obvious Means of Support.
the screenplay, written by Charles Bukowski himself, is only semi-autobiographical, it's not meant to be historically accurate, it's a work of cinematic fiction more or less
Great movie. I just love Bukowski. His opinion of Rourke was a little contradictory. In his book Hollywood he said he liked the performance but thought Rourke was kind of a spoiled Hollywood kid. Later on, he said he didn't like his performance so much. I, for one, thought Rourke did a brilliant job.
Classic. I have no idea why people are slamming at you personally for uploading this film. Even if you don't dig the movie, it was written by Bukowski himself and serves as an adjunct to his other works. Works which have him ranked among the greatest writers in American history. Bukowski is the greatest poet of the age. Seeing the film, which Bukowski himself thought didn't quite represent him the way he intended, is still instructive and worthwhile and offers insight into his poet's mind.
"Do you hate people?" "No but I seem to feel much better when they're not around." My fav line.
Some people dont go crazy what truly horrible lives they must live
while he's taking to someone
Same here.
He originally wrote it about cops, but it makes sense here too.
That's a W.C. Fields line. The entire movie is Mickey Rourke doing a bad W.C. Fields. Still entertaining though
One of my all time favorite movies. The fact that almost no one saw or knows about ( and those who did see, didn't get it) it, only speaks to it's beautifully esoteric nature. This film is so gorgeous in it's raw and unwavering nature. To this day, I often find myself quoting lines from it.
The movie is based on the real life story of Charles Bukowski....a drunken literary genius.
@@mark1952able if it’s his favorite movie I’m sure he knows that
Also pope of greenwich village from Rourke was good
Same here... "Fuck you TWICE a night" is me favorite.
lol this movie sucked shit, what are you talking about. it's interesting as a piece of strange media and the story of it's creation process but as a film it's dog shit
This movie needs to be available for purchase. One of my favorites

At least!
Effing right!!!

@gregorygraham4117 that's sad.
This almost 10 minute clip has more acting and talent than most movies I've seen in many years
i even remember there names .
Right on

Mickey Rourke is one and only !!!
Id say that man has a way with words....
It's wierd he said he the performance was exaggerated years later
The one who rubbishes those who claim to be expert in the morning before I have to pick up the keys from the house..
This is an Oscar worthy performance I'm saying...U don't see Mickey Rourke he becomes the character
love watching a scabby drunk walk around from scene to scene like he's got a hot lump of shit crammed in between his ass cheeks
Barfly and The Wrestler, in my opinion was Mickey's best movies...
Rumblefish.
Also Pope of Greenwich village
Diner too! Don't forget!!
Yes it were
Love this Movie - Real Life. Mickey should've gotten an Academy Award for this.
Brilliant movie. First saw it back in 1988. Loved it then and still love it.
this film is never brought up by mickey yet its one of his finest performances
Mickey Rourke was fantastic in this. This and Johnny Handsome are among my favorite Rourke performances.
Mickey really nails this Character such great acting.
Cheers!
Foreal
Yes he sure does a great job. So does Dunaway.
One of my favorite Mickey Rourke flicks.
+Sluggz McGee Its a toss up for me this and Pope of Greenwich Village
Sluggz McGee Mickey should've gotten an Academy Award nomination for this splendid work.
He played the role brilliantly!
One of my favorite movies of all time.
Mickey rourke had a couple of fantastic roles
Great film! I saw it years ago. 🍺
excellent movie, no one could have portrayed bukowski better. thanks for the upload, brother!
Remembering Big Ed's Bar Culver City where a lot of this was filmed. Long since gone to urban renewal.
So many great one liners in this unique and groundbreaking movie. Absolutely amazing.
I loved this movie when I seen it in late 80s or early 90s.
scene 3:55 to 4:30. is absolutely brilliant. "This is a world where everybody's got do something...
Great scene, and I relate big time.
Love tut his movie and yes everyone I know has never seen this movie. This movie is fantastic
I lost track of how many times I’ve seen this movie.
Just wanted to give a shout out to ALL the supporting cast of the bars patrons, so gritty and real, such an incredible movie! 🙌👌👏👏
Jack Nance, Lynch's best man, R.I.P.

This is a great movie. I saw it in the theater and loved it. I just wish it was available on DVD in the US.
It's available on Ebay.
“Yeah but that counts too.”
Used that line a few times when people come at me with the luck argument.
Thanks for sharing this here & allowing comments too. So grateful i am clean & sober.
If i wasn't a Rourke fan I would never have heard of Bukowski. I owe him big for that.
never heard of this movie until the tattoo artist who did my charles bukowski quote told me about it. so excited to watch it
Well did you watch it ??
I love the movie, love his books, love him. This compilation of scenes highlights almost all of the things that make this particular film (Bukowski's script) great. Thanks for posting!
One of my and my friends and family's favorite movies of all time!
Fantastic movie. Brutally honest!
Cheers to Barfly! 🍻

There was a stabbing in this clip! Didja miss it?
They looked so good then before plastic surgery

I found this movie for free on an app and it was mind blowing. Just a fantastic film !
Truly one of the best movies ever made that hardly no one even knows about. In my Top 5 All-Time. Check out Slaughter House 5 sometime. It's brilliant too.
And the legend Albert King "Born Under a Bad Sign" playing in the background.
I noticed that too
@@RavnerRavner Such a great choice.
One of my all-time favorites.
I love this movie!
one of my favourite movies ever !! love gritty, true to life films...you can almost smell the booze on Henrys breath
Barfly had some world-class dialogue.
"Was he dead?"
"I don't think so, he was smoking a cigarette."
One of my favorite movies, none of my friends understand why.

Been a long while for this one. Bought the VHS after a couple work buddies of mine sent me in the direction.
I want to watch this, but it’s not available anywhere in the US now. 😣
Mickey Rourke is my favorite actor , by far.
Great movie, great performance. If you don't like it big deal, why waste your time posting negative comments about it because your not gonna change anyone's mind about the greatness of this movie.
Loved this movie. I watched it in LA
It'll be sad if i drink a 12 pack while watching this and chain smoking

Cut short? Did you miss him starring in Sin City, The Wrestler, Iron Man 2, The Expendables? His career didn't die in the 80s.
great movie
Great video . . . thanks for the upload!!!
Only seen once back in the 80s
Good movies back then
Also one of my fav all time movies!
Drinks for all my friends

87’ Faye is hardly exquisite without context. Especially in this role
Great Movie !!
3:55 he says it all. Almost Buddhist.
One of my favorite Rourke and Dunaway roles. Too bad Rourke clashed with the director.
Bukowski said that Rourke looked too scruffy and too much like a bum.
Why can't I see the BARFLY movie
One of Mickey's best roles
rourke was amazing in the day.
Great movie !
Did this ever even make it to DVD? One of my favorite films and I can find it anywhere
the carpet cleaner routine get's um every time
He's got the Bukowski delivery down pretty good in this.
Mickey admired James Dean...it shows in his acting style
Good stuff
"Why are you so fucked up?" - Possibly the best line in any movie.
I thought of a great line for a comeback " you mean drunk or my disposition ? "
Wasn't that in Rumblefish, too?
As fucked up as he seems, he's really talking about something so real and deep. And that's how it happens so much.
Love this movie!
Good Flick !
love this movie.
Aahh, the memories.
Mickey Rourke's constant Snagglepuss imitation is the highlight of this film, and , perhaps, its only saving grace.
Great movie. I just love Bukowski. His opinion of Rourke was a little contradictory. In his book Hollywood he said he liked the performance but thought Rourke was kind of a spoiled Hollywood kid.

Frank Stallone.
The brother that nobody wanted.
Holy shit!!!!!!!! It's ON...123movies!!!!!!
I had been beaten up, broken nose, night in the hospital, hiding from children, saw double for 3 days, when I saw this movie.
Great great movie!!

This fim changed my entire word view.
it certainly is a great film I wish there were a couple more like it with M
No Barfly 2, now that's criminal.
I don't know about that. Very rarely is the sequel even close to the original.
Brillianr!!!
Totally Mickey!
Henry didn't like it because Mickey nailed it
