Bose, INA, Czech Symphony Orchestra and Rahman | Shyam Benegal | Rahman Music Sheets - Episode 20

  • Shyam Benegal’s 2005 film ‘Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose - The Forgotten Hero’ depicts Netaji’s life from 1939 onwards - leaping across British India, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, finally ending with the exploits of the INA back in India. The film and its massive global cultural spectrum demanded a virtuoso like Rahman and he took it up like a ‘Maestro’.
For its background tracks, Rahman worked with Czech Film Orchestra at Prague.
To adopt many songs of Indian national Army (INA) he opted for Western Choir, Chennai & Mumbai Film Choir. These songs were beautifully integrated into the film’s narrative.
The music defied demands of the mainstream cinema. It might not have ruled the popularity charts but created a textbook template for multi-cultural storytelling that remains an example in itself.
Many believe, that with this film Rahman transformed from a music composer to a Maestro. In Shyam Benegal’s own words,”Rahman’s understanding of music is very sophisticated.”

It is one of the best album of ARR. I am actually surprised that neither the vocal tracks nor the theme songs are played in any of the live shows by ARR himself.

Then people will wonder where this is from. They are hardly popular. In shows like that the conveners of the show will have a say and they would want some popular numbers to be in.

Shyam Benegal ! Respect ! What a man ! This episode went off just like that and I almost forgot that each episode has COVER songs ! For Mr Benegal's experience and inputs, we did not need the songs ! Thanks for a great episode.

Nobody does music with a patriotic fervour than ARR. There’s an inherent piety, depth and divinity in them, giving a rousing and spiritual elevation…..
    This soundtrack is one such…..
Other stellar examples are ‘sarfaroshi ki tamanna’ (both aggressive and pensive) or the entire Legend of Bhagat Singh album, the unmatchable ’yeh jo des he tera (vocal and even more powerful shehnai version) and many others…
Mr Benegal’s scholarly view of the interplay between music and the art of storytelling is such a treat for movie muggles like us
Thank you again O2India, another feather in your cap…

First things first - I’m in love with this series and eagerly waiting for each new episode. That said, this episode left a lot to imagination. Bose and Zubeida are two most underrated gems which haven’t got their right due, at least with the masses.
I was expecting a bit more from the conversation with Shayam Benegal. Like, why Lata Mangeshkar didn’t sing Ekla Chalo or ‘Zikr’, one of the most beautiful compositions of ARR wasn’t properly filmed. The songs were used in bits and pieces in Shayam Benegal movies to move forward the narrative, like they do in West which was a novel things back in the day for desi movie goers and maybe that’s why the music didn’t capture the imagination of masses - or maybe something else. Don’t know. Anyways, best luck with the upcoming episodes.

Dear Mr. Anjum. We are delighted to have informed and enlightened viewers like you. You have the capacity to initiate an informed discussion. With due respect to your opinion, allow us to mention, if you check the entire filmography of Mr. Benegal there are very few songs that were lip- synked. So you are right that the songs were used to take the narrative forward. Mr. Benegal also confirmed that the film wasn't really released very well... We are sure that you are aware that there were protests in West Bengal regarding the projection of Mr. Bose especially his marriage. All these factors did impact the film and its music. Please stay with the series. Warm regards.

This series just gets better and better, every episode is a masterclass on its own.... Thank you for bringing it to us.... As for the use of Western orchestras, I've seen them enhancing the level of the music each time our composers go to them ... a Rahman, an Ilaiyaraaja or an Ajay Atul for Sairat.... All have a huge credit in raising the level of the audiences... To understand harmonies, rhythms, counterpoints...Kudos for what is already TH-cam history in the making....i wish we could have similar milestones for Ilaiyaraaja and RD Burman for starters....

I watched all the three episodes featuring Shyam Benegal in this series.
Rahman and Benegal have striking similarities. Both refused to walk on the beaten track and created paths of their own. Benegal challenged the status quo in film production and Rahman in music composition.
No wonder, Benegal, himself an iconoclast, chose Rahman to compose music for Zubaida breaking his long association with Vanraj Bhatia. Rahman did not disappoint him and did a wonderful job in Zubaida. The partnership flourished further -creatively, if not commercially- in Netaji: a Forgotten Hero. We look forward to their further creative collaborations.👍👍👍.

This is so far my favorite episode just because there were no cover songs in between. It is my humble request to the producers that they release the content without any featured covers, it certainly is not something the audience come here for. A small dose of information per week that too with covers in between makes the videos less engaging.

Dear Mam. Thank you very much for your appreciation. It means a lot. With due respect to your perspective about Cover Songs, allow us to mention that we use them to showcase how Mr. Rahman's music defies all physical & cultural boundaries. There are many viewers who like them also. To respect our viewers, we have tried to create a balance. We use covers in a manner that the narrative is not broken but just punctuated. Hope you will understand our point of view and stay with the series. We need great viewers like you. regards.

INA was a group that converted itself into an army spontaneously. And was not paid mercenaries unlike most organised armies today.
Also different, was INA took support of Hitler, and not the rather controversial "non violence" of the brahmin bania duo of Nehru and Gandhi. It also had a large muslim numbers, unlike the then "Indian" British army.
