Love the idea of using a soft crumb in the bottom the bag to hook in to. I typically leave a longer tag end on the mesh to hook through but your way looks as effective and wastes less PVA. Going to tie a few of these up today to hopefully get on the bank mid week. Tight lines!!
Great video; simple, step by step explanation and really good close up camera angles so we can actually see what you are doing...so many instructional vids fail on this point and the guys hand is in the way when he is doing a close up...really frustrating. I use a very similar PVA setup but slip an Alka Seltzer tablet into the bag...not sure if it makes a huge difference but has got me the odd bite when the temps are really low.

Back in the 8o's i had a m8 who had access to a compacted powder machine, he used to produce 15mm boilies using just base mixes, we used to drill them and thread them onto hook links,would stay solid for about 5 mins, they worked a treat, no idea why it never caught on
Right, interesting, yeah, I can see that working. I doubt that without a binding agent they would transport well so that may be why it never caught on. Cheers, Matt.
Hi Lee, ah not an easy time of year. I’ve had a 12 night run of blanks here this winter lol. When it ain’t right, it ain’t right and there’s nothing to be done. Over the last couple of weeks, the conditions have improved down here and there are bites to be had but I know they’ve shut down again in the last 24 hrs. It’s all very on and off. Still wouldn't it be boring if we caught every time lol. It’s what keeps the fire burning! All the best, Matt.

Just watched your video on ova mesh, excellent video. I keep seeing videos on TH-cam, saying don't use pellets in bags if you there's alot of bream in the late.
Hi Lee, glad that you enjoyed the video. Yes, bream can be a problem on some waters and bream love pellets for sure! I would certainly not use pellets when river carping for example. The level of bream activity can also change during the year so don’t write pellets off completely as they can be a big edge early in the season. There’s only one way to find out and that’s to go fishing and see what happens 😊 Cheers, Matt.

Hi Rolf, ah well spotted! For this lead system I’ve combined a Nash shock bead with a Nash tungsten anti tangle sleeve (long). The shock bead is designed to be used the other way around but I realised that it’s a perfect short taper for a Fox run ring. The anti tangle tube supports the shock bead from the inside by filling the recess designed for the swivel. The extra long anti tangle sleeve improves castabability when using small PVA mesh bags. It’s a great little setup that I’ve been testing this winter. It works in a familiar fashion to my shock and run system but it's a bit more discrete and streamlined. Also you don’t have to butcher a lead clip. The only downside I’ve found is that you have to use 40lb lead free leader otherwise it’s impossible to thread the anti tangle sleeve over it. Hi Matt just one more question, sorry. I noticed you have gone back to a kicker and silicone on the shank with the size 8 twister, do you think this is better than the simple nylon rig you have shown us with the little hook bead kicking the hair out and holding down the knot. Thanks again Simon
I’m using this combination because it’s better suited to light 12lb mono. The mono hair rig works better with heavier mono. It’s to do with the size of the eye relative to the hooklink material. Both rigs work great, it just depends on what strength of hooklink material I need for where I’m fishing. Full video on this rig will be out next year 😊

@@RADDY1993 It’s easy to get lost in the maze mate. I spent some time there myself lol! The best change I ever made to my fishing was to stop changing bait and rigs every 5 minutes, it does you no good at all. Choose your bait for the season, choose a rig for the season and just go fishing. It makes it so much more simple and frees you up to concentrate on what really matters, which is when and where to fish. Best of luck, Matt.
Hi Chris, yes mate! Bloody brilliant stuff actually. Been testing it all winter and I’ve had 3 x 40s along with a number of other cracking carp. When I first saw the price I was a bit shocked as it’s only a 200g bag but it lasts ages actually if you use it sparingly. You don’t need much, just a small spoonful. I’ve been using it in combination with the Citruz pellet, bottom baits and plume juice. One bag of each has lasted me for months and I’ve still got some left. Do let me know how you get on. Since you now have a video on winter fishing I have a question for you that has been on my mind for quite some time. A carp angler named Vinny Pritchard made a video for DNA baits dating back March 2021. In this video he talks about using light leads (1 oz leads) on a lead clip for winter carp fishing. Does this really work? Or would be a 1 oz lead on a running rig more effective? I tried the 1 oz lead clip set up throughout this winter on one of my rods. To be fair I only had 10 carp in total, but not one on the 1 oz lead clip. Since I could not find anything on TH-cam, or even much on the internet, about using light leads for carp fishing I would be greatful for your opinion and your advice ! It’s an interesting question and definitely one I will be spending a bit more time on. Before we talk lead size let's chat about lead systems: Personally I always opt for a running lead system above all else, unless I have a very good reason for using a lead clip. This winter I’ve stuck to my 3oz running leads and it’s all gone according to plan (when the carp have played ball!). I do drop lead size when fishing at close range over soft silt but when I’m casting 10 wraps+ and need to hit a spot accurately I’m more dialled in with a 3oz lead. Wind has an effect of course. I use a lot of PVA mesh in the winter and I need the 3oz lead to keep the trap going where it should. I was chatting to a fishery manager friend of mine that was talking about light running leads and what he’s caught using them. I’d really like to do a video on lead size as it’s a great subject I think. I don’t have all the answers but it’s definitely worth exploring the boundaries and thinking outside the box. I’ve had 10 carp myself this winter and I’m happy. It’s a tricky time of year to conduct such an experiment because location and timing is everything so I’d take that with a pinch of salt. If you can get away with a 1oz lead then I’d definitely set it up as a running system. Enjoy and do let me know how it goes! Cheers, Matt.

Hi Dennis, ah well spotted! So that little device is called a bore tool (from Nash). It was originally designed for boring out popups to create very neat snowman presentations. It can also be used to help double bottom baits sit neatly together. This is just another way of using the tool. Any engineer will tell you that it’s actually a three fluted countersink mounted on a handle 🙄! With this tool, I've been able to put my countersink back where it should live in my tool box rather than my tackle box lol. Cheers, Matt.

Hitting a new unfished lake next week. About 6 acres and featureless. Carp up to the 30lb mark. Will be going with the solid PVA method. Anything u can recommend?
Hmm, well I’d say find some fish to cast too. Wang them out and sit on your hands. Do not 2nd guess yourself, don’t move the rigs. Just leave them and see what happens. You need to have the confidence for them to work their magic. If your hooks are sharp and rigs are good, and you cast them in the right place at the right time, you’ll catch. If not, then reevaluate and try again another day.
Haha, very well spotted!! ! I’m just testing some other hooks and rigs this winter to see how I get on. They are working well and the hook holds have been good. It’s fun to experiment and I like to try different things (and keep you guys on your toes 😅)
Hi Mark, good idea for a video, thanks! It’s a T2 that I’ve got. I’ve not quite had it a year yet. It’s a fabulous piece of kit for long season work. I set mine up in November and take it down in March so it gets some use lol. If you are in the market for a well built bivvy that will last for years and is as comfortable in the winter as it is the summer then the T1 or 2 is hard to beat IMO. I would suggest you get the HD groundsheet with it especially if you are setting up on gravel as I do. I also use a couple of the Nash Bivvy mats to reduce wear on the floor. The only niggle (and it is only that) is that in heavy rain the water does pool in the top. It does depend somewhat on the exact angle of the swim. Other than that it’s fantastic, highly recommended. Hi Steven, wow someone’s been paying attention! It’s just another combo I’ve been testing mate. It’s all done with Nash bits apart from the run ring which is Fox. The short sleeve is a Nash Shock bead. I’ve mounted it backwards to how it was intended to be used and this enables me to poke an extra long tungsten anti-tangle sleeve up the hole where the swivel normally sits. This creates a little shock and run setup without having to butcher a lead clip lol. They both work in exactly the same way. This one can only be used with lead free leader though. We haven’t made a video on it yet 😉 Cheers, Matt.

@@stevenmiller3784 So I used to design and manufacture plastic injection moulded products. The cheaper the material, the sooner it goes off (especially when you are talking about soft plastics that are often used in fishing). Good quality plastics will last for many years of hard use. I’ve been using various Nash bits for years and I’ve always found them to be extremely durable. They cost what they cost because Nash uses good quality materials. I could set up a shock & run system using the same items I used in testing from 2 years ago and they would work perfectly.
The Nash fizzing stick mix that I used in this video has now been discontinued. The Nash Citruz range has been re-engineered from scratch and there will be a Citruz stick mix to match the new Citruz boilies hitting the shelves of the tackle shops soon.
@@leesurman2331 Actually mate, in this video, I was experimenting with a size 8 long shank twisters which have an in turned eye. This is why I had to add the small kicker to manage the line angle. There'll be a full video on this rig in the spring. Length is 6 to 9 inches, covers most situations.
Hi Stephen, I don’t use fluoro. This rig was made with Nash 12lb Zig-Flo which is a supple mono material. It comes on 100m spools and costs a lot less than fluoro. Good knot strength and easy to work with too. I really like it 😊
Hi Benjamin, I've been using the Ultegra 14000 XTCs on my Scopes. They're a big pit reel but very lightweight so it doesn't mess up the balance too much. Check out the new LR 6000 from Nash, I've just received one that I'm going to use on my 10ft X series for marker/spod. Haven't used it much yet but first impressions are very positive. The LR 6000s are a medium pit reel and 150gr lighter than the Ultegras. Cheers, Matt

Hi John, it all depends on how dry you can keep them really. If they are tightly wrapped in a good quality zip-loc bag they’d last quite a while I suspect. Damp air will weaken the PVA mesh and the pellets will absorb moisture and may start to go off. I mentioned a week based on what I’ve achieved with zero issues in my own fishing. Hope that helps. Since you now have a video on winter fishing I have a question for you that has been on my mind for quite some time. A carp angler named Vinny Pritchard made a video for DNA baits dating back March 2021. In this video he talks about using light leads (1 oz leads) on a lead clip for winter carp fishing. Does this really work? Or would be a 1 oz lead on a running rig more effective? I tried the 1 oz lead clip set up throughout this winter on one of my rods. To be fair I only had 10 carp in total, but not one on the 1 oz lead clip. Since I could not find anything on TH-cam, or even much on the internet, about using light leads for carp fishing I would be greatful for your opinion and your advice !

It’s an interesting question and definitely one I will be spending a bit more time on. Before we talk lead size let's chat about lead systems: Personally I always opt for a running lead system above all else, unless I have a very good reason for using a lead clip. This winter I’ve stuck to my 3oz running leads and it’s all gone according to plan (when the carp have played ball!). I do drop lead size when fishing at close range over soft silt but when I’m casting 10 wraps+ and need to hit a spot accurately I’m more dialled in with a 3oz lead. Wind has an effect of course. I use a lot of PVA mesh in the winter and I need the 3oz lead to keep the trap going where it should. I was chatting to a fishery manager friend of mine that was talking about light running leads and what he’s caught using them. I’d really like to do a video on lead size as it’s a great subject I think. I don’t have all the answers but it’s definitely worth exploring the boundaries and thinking outside the box. I’ve had 10 carp myself this winter and I’m happy. It’s a tricky time of year to conduct such an experiment because location and timing is everything so I’d take that with a pinch of salt. If you can get away with a 1oz lead then I’d definitely set it up as a running system. Enjoy and do let me know how it goes! Cheers, Matt.
Hi Mathew, fishing a water where everyone is heli spinner rig. Pouch of baits over the top. Makes sense as often just chucking it out or at shows (unknown bottom) thinking I’ll I’ve this a bash to try and do something different from the crowd
Okay cool 👍 Just remember that any rig is only as good as the hook point + the lead setup is just as important as the rig itself (free running is all you need!)

Hi Dennis, ah well spotted! So that little device is called a bore tool (from Nash). It was originally designed for boring out popups to create very neat snowman presentations. It can also be used to help double bottom baits sit neatly together. This is just another way of using the tool. Any engineer will tell you that it’s actually a three fluted countersink mounted on a handle 🙄! With this tool, I've been able to put my countersink back where it should live in my tool box rather than my tackle box lol. Cheers, Matt.

Hitting a new unfished lake next week. About 6 acres and featureless. Carp up to the 30lb mark. Will be going with the solid PVA method. Anything u can recommend?
Hmm, well I’d say find some fish to cast too. Wang them out and sit on your hands. Do not 2nd guess yourself, don’t move the rigs. Just leave them and see what happens. You need to have the confidence for them to work their magic. If your hooks are sharp and rigs are good, and you cast them in the right place at the right time, you’ll catch. If not, then reevaluate and try again another day.

Haha, very well spotted!! ! I’m just testing some other hooks and rigs this winter to see how I get on. They are working well and the hook holds have been good. It’s fun to experiment and I like to try different things (and keep you guys on your toes 😅)

Hi Mark, good idea for a video, thanks! It’s a T2 that I’ve got. I’ve not quite had it a year yet. It’s a fabulous piece of kit for long season work. I set mine up in November and take it down in March so it gets some use lol. If you are in the market for a well built bivvy that will last for years and is as comfortable in the winter as it is the summer then the T1 or 2 is hard to beat IMO. I would suggest you get the HD groundsheet with it especially if you are setting up on gravel as I do. I also use a couple of the Nash Bivvy mats to reduce wear on the floor. The only niggle (and it is only that) is that in heavy rain the water does pool in the top. It does depend somewhat on the exact angle of the swim. Other than that it’s fantastic, highly recommended. Can I ask what you are using to keep the run ring in place , it’s no longer the Nash lead clip that’s been cut down ?
Hi Steven, wow someone’s been paying attention! It’s just another combo I’ve been testing mate. It’s all done with Nash bits apart from the run ring which is Fox. The short sleeve is a Nash Shock bead. I’ve mounted it backwards to how it was intended to be used and this enables me to poke an extra long tungsten anti-tangle sleeve up the hole where the swivel normally sits. This creates a little shock and run setup without having to butcher a lead clip lol. They both work in exactly the same way. This one can only be used with lead free leader though. We haven’t made a video on it yet 😉 Cheers, Matt.

I’m currently using the clip as your previous clip shows, so far so good
The only problem for me is the front of the clip extends a little bit too far forward

@@stevenmiller3784 So I used to design and manufacture plastic injection moulded products. The cheaper the material, the sooner it goes off (especially when you are talking about soft plastics that are often used in fishing). Good quality plastics will last for many years of hard use. I’ve been using various Nash bits for years and I’ve always found them to be extremely durable. They cost what they cost because Nash uses good quality materials. I could set up a shock & run system using the same items I used in testing from 2 years ago and they would work perfectly.
Is the fizzing stik mix purchase-able or can it made, please.
The Nash fizzing stick mix that I used in this video has now been discontinued. The Nash Citruz range has been re-engineered from scratch and there will be a Citruz stick mix to match the new Citruz boilies hitting the shelves of the tackle shops soon.
Matt, what is the box you use when making the sticks? Is it Nash?

@@leesurman2331 Actually mate, in this video, I was experimenting with a size 8 long shank twisters which have an in turned eye. This is why I had to add the small kicker to manage the line angle. There'll be a full video on this rig in the spring. Length is 6 to 9 inches, covers most situations.

Hi Stephen, I don’t use fluoro. This rig was made with Nash 12lb Zig-Flo which is a supple mono material. It comes on 100m spools and costs a lot less than fluoro. Good knot strength and easy to work with too. I really like it 😊

Hi Benjamin, I've been using the Ultegra 14000 XTCs on my Scopes. They're a big pit reel but very lightweight so it doesn't mess up the balance too much. Check out the new LR 6000 from Nash, I've just received one that I'm going to use on my 10ft X series for marker/spod. Haven't used it much yet but first impressions are very positive. The LR 6000s are a medium pit reel and 150gr lighter than the Ultegras. Cheers, Matt

why do they only last a week or so?
Hi John, it all depends on how dry you can keep them really. If they are tightly wrapped in a good quality zip-loc bag they’d last quite a while I suspect. Damp air will weaken the PVA mesh and the pellets will absorb moisture and may start to go off. I mentioned a week based on what I’ve achieved with zero issues in my own fishing. Hope that helps.
