    Original hardware (cart/console/controller) -- front-loader.
    Single segment, with saves, resets, and power cycles.
    This run used the standard initial memory state. Cartridge SRAM was not cleared, however no initial state for the in-battle RNG was assumed by this route.

    I spent my entire summer between 4th and 5th grade playing this game with my best friend and our brothers using the Nintendo Power strategy guide... when we needed to stock up on heal potions we left an encyclopedia on a turbo controller and went swimming and ate lunch... This video on my 3rd monitor at work during an afternoon brought back that euphoria... Best summer ever... But the real point.... Nobody could have every beat this game without the strategy guide... not in a summer at least... Well done in 3 hours...

  • @Evidemment
    @Evidemment 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    So if you're looking at the pros/cons of using a Black Belt as primary damage later...
    Pros: You would be able to skip a lot of things you otherwise have to do. You'd no longer be forced to get a class change, as Black Belt is stronger than Master. This allows you to skip the whole Castle of Ordeals, as well as Bahamut. You'd also be able to skip grabbing Xcalbur, Masmune, and most armor. Black Belt's Absorb stat unarmored is his level, meaning until you grab him the Opal Bracelet he'll be fine naked. He gets his 5th and 6th attacks at level 21, meaning at that point with Fast he'll be attacking 12 times, and he crits more often than the Knight. The critical hit rate of the Ice Sword is 20, the Masmune is 40, the Black Belt's crit rate is twice his level -- as is his unarmed damage. That's another pro -- you're cutting out rng STR gain for your knight, because for BB it's a useless stat. Ultimately, your BB will outdamage a Knight even with Masmune. Finally, Black Belt gets more magic defense than Fighter, which makes status attacks and spells hit him less often. At level 21, a Fighter/Knight has 75 magic defense, which means a status attack hits him roughly 1/8 of the time. A BB is at 90 by then, and will be hit 1/20 of the time. Given a bug in how these status attacks are inflicted (it'll often roll 4-7 times instead of just once), this can be a big advantage against stunlock.
    Cons: Your BB won't always outdamage your Knight until around level 30-32. Flat numbers will often favor the Knight, but the higher crit rate should favor the Black Belt on most hits. Skipping the Castle of Ordeals saves time, but not much -- it's a short dungeon, and you get the Zeus glove, the Heal staff and the Gold bracelet. Skipping class change also blocks the Warp spell. Finally, there's an armor bug that occurs every time the BB levels up -- the game will forget he's wearing armor until you visit the armor screen. It means once you have the Opal/Gold bracelet on him, you'll have to menu once every time he levels.
    So ultimately, it's a calculation based on 1) the benefit of skipping Class Change vs the downside of missing Zeus, Heal staff and Warp spell, 2) the benefit of avoiding late-game stunlock, skipping certain chests and doing increased damage vs the downside of extra Agama battles to grind.

      Thought I read/experienced that you could not defeat Kraken until you had matured?

    • @feasel
      @feasel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ordeals/Class-change is not required to beat the game. But it's generally worth it in a speedrun, or even a regular playthrough, because it allows you to get better spells (particularly the WARP spell in this run), use better equipment, and it improves the stat growth of your characters (besides black belt).

    Hey found a glitch in Final Fantasy 1 for NES years ago.. anytime you take the SHIP into a harbor walk into the town.. go to the INN spend the night.. hold reset and turn power off.. turn the game back on now leave the INN.. leave the village get on your SHIP and after sailing a short distance.. a random encounter will flash the screen. In most roms or original carts of the game for the NES.. the random enemy will ALWAYS be "Kyzokus" (but on some carts it is a shark every time lol)which are similar to the pirates you fought in the town you got the SHIP! they are useful for raising GP in short amounts of time but not much else. Still a neat bug i wanted to share.

    Im 35, just played the game for the first time (i owned a SEGA Mastersystem), i played for 6 days & 4 hours a day to beat this game, and DESTROYED this game with ease.
    Went Fighter + Fighter + Red Mage + Black Mage.
    Protips:
    -You can grind gold & exp vs Orges around the 'Melmond' city area, and in the dwarf cave on the far left side of the dungeon map.
    -Use the Wizard's Heal Staff near the end of your battle to heal your party to save gold instead of using heal potions.
    -Cast 'Fast' at the START of your battles on each of your Fighter class heroes to do DOUBLE damage EACH strike!

      Experience is divided among your characters. The fewer characters the more XP they each get and the faster they level up. It also makes the combat go quicker with fewer characters. Also, I don't bring the mage back to life at the end of the game because he is so under-levelled that he'd die instantly anyway

    • @chaoskiller6084
      @chaoskiller6084 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically, the route is tested using savestates to minimise the amount of time in battles. Using a Potion before an encounter completely skips it (in 2 and 3, not sure about 1) as it resets the step counter.

  • @russelllovett4272
    @russelllovett4272 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For leveling up - the BEST place to do this is the square in front of the FLOATER in the ICE CAVE vs the EYE. 3225 exp and 90% of the time he casts spells that are nullified by the RIBBON. Save time here, friend. 👍😊

    • @feasel
      @feasel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Since the Eye can insta-kill any party member with less than 300 HP that's a risky spot to grind. In practice that spot works a lot better when you start the grind a little bit higher than this party would be at that time, since losing a party member during the grind means end of run. But it can be done if you are willing to take that risk. There's also the matter of that spot burning through the step counter (unlike the Agama spot which has a pair of free squares side by side), so it would be a bit harder to get favorable random encounters in the ice cave, which (with this route at least) just barely has enough steps to get through it while avoiding the really bad random monsters. An Eye grind could be routed in, though, at some risk.

    So I was looking for a way to make Lich go easier, short of Level 8, and the only thing I found was that you should pick up the FIRE spell at some point. Lich resists ICE, so having FIRE gives Cal something to do after his two FIR2 charges. Course, if Cal survives ICE2 your success rate is higher anyway, but in the event Ace or Bil dies to ICE2 or they just get shitty rolls, and Cal is alive, using FIRE over ICE helps your odds.

    • @feasel
      @feasel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      considered that, but the advantage of FIRE is so marginal that it's not worth the time spent buying it at L1 black mage shop. In a good run this fight shouldn't last past the FIR2s anyway.

    Is the naming of the characters counted toward the run time?

    • @feasel

      Saving the game and resetting in the overworld lets you skip encounters if you do it at the right time. Houses refill more health than Cabins, as well as refilling your magic.

      That's a Tool-Assisted Speedrun. It is not being played by a human. TASes are a different competitive category than human-played speedruns like this one. TheAxeMan's TAS is quite amazing though, and was one of the things that inspired me to run this game.

    Yo the saving before battle thing doesn't make sense to me. So either you've memorized about a 200+ step sequence throughout the game or there's a rhythm that you follow. If it's 200+ steps just to avoid fighting, that would put the other sequences of the game to a total of probably like 500 or so. This doesn't make sense just purely on memory grounds. That would be like having around 15 games of chess memorized, move-by-move.

    • @feasel
      @feasel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The encounters are on a 256 step sequence, and the sequence varies slightly depending on whether youre in land, boat, or dungeon. The sequence repeats over and over, several dozen times throughout the run. If you always walk the same path it's not hard to memorize There's only a couple hundred fights in the run so it's not hard to memorize what square they occur on, and you can take notes if it helps (though after a few attempts you don't really need the notes). That covers "where". The "what" is different. Which monsters you get in each encounter is controlled by a completely independent mechanism, which also has 256 possibilities to it. For that it took a very long time to figure out how to get the easiest or fastest (or most lucrative, depending on the objective) monster-set for each of the fights. And then you have to figure out which map region or which floor you want to be on in order for that fight to occur, how many extra steps you want to take in order to line up the monster cycle with your route, and how many fights you need to skip by using saving/resetting. But all that work happens ahead of time. Once you know what your plan is, it's just a matter of memorizing where to take the extra steps and which encounters to skip with the tent.

    So long story shortened a bit, anyone remember K-Mart??
    It was 1990, around October or so, my school rezoned on me, and I had to go to a new school, and of course, it sucked.
    I was walking through K-Mart, with my head hung low, and saw Dragon Warrior, Crystalis, and this sitting on a red lazy Susan plastic rack.
    I almost reached the line with Crystalis in my hand, when I saw the 40$ Nintendo Power Final Fantasy strategy guide.
    Sixty five dollars for the game, thirty five dollars for the guide to go with it.
    Eleven year old me cursing out the swamp cave in Sanscript, 'cause I was possessed by the ancient spirits of evil to get that f*,*#%^ Crown.
    And then got royally rubbed out by "A$$ Toast" Astos. Rage quit and never came back until almost 1992, one year later.

      four white mages

    • @Nooblivious
      @Nooblivious 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The standard load out is a whitemage a black mage, a red mage and a physical attacker. I recommend fighter, because it does more damage, but monk and thief work too. White mages are arguably essential for a standard run because of a spell only they can learn, and at the very end of the game "full-life". Revives your party member, and gives them full health.

    • @Nooblivious

  • @gregbright1358

    why isn't Cal a Red mage? More durable and would provide slightly more damage at the start of the run. He can learn all the same spells in addition to exit.

    • @feasel
      @feasel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Black mage gets the WARP spell (and most spells) at an earlier level than Red mage. That's what makes the Black mage faster for a speedrun. Red mage's physical damage is not so great; certainly not enough to offset the cost of grinding the extra levels needed to get the spells you want. For anyone who is NOT trying to get world record, though, I definitely recommend Red Mage.
