I'm pretty much an 'out of the box' sort of builder. Been at it fifty years now (gulp!), although not continuously. My painting skills have come on in leaps and bounds thanks in no small measure to channels like yours. Back in the day it was enamels, now I use acrylics and even oils.......how times change. Which reminds me, when I was a teenager the only way you could modify your model was scratch building with card or rod; if you wanted, say a different nose for a two seater version of a single seat fighter, you had to carve and sand a balsa wood plug then use talcum powder mixed with dope to get an acceptable painting surface on the wood. And do a LOT of sanding! (No wonder I am out of the box). After market accessories, photo etch and resin, are a godsend and I use them now and again. I don't think it diminishes the hobby, it just adds to it's evolution. Not really into helicopters but the Apaches operated by the British Army trundle overhead fairly regularly on their way to and from a local training ground; evil looking and sort of unnatural but very impressive. It's awesome to see you back again friend. Was wondering when you'd return to TH-cam. The Apache turned out fantastic and I can't wait to get started on one myself. Fantastic work my friend!

Looks better than a pure straight blade on a model that is being displayed on the ground.

Hi Douglas, thanks so very much for your service! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and please always make having fun in your model builds the Number One goal, they don't always have to be the best (mine aren't 😉). The modern Tamiya kits are certainly some of the best fitting out there and that's always helpful in creating a pleasant experience, I agree.
I only returned to the hobby at the start of this year, having not touched a kit since the early 2000's. Things like 3D printed decals are a positive step IMO. There's satisfaction that comes from picking out all the moulded kit detail and hand painting switches and so on, but stuff like Quinta, Red Fox and Eduard's decals are just easier, quicker and (certainly for less talented modellers like me) look better. Superb TH-cam channel and content, fantastic builds - keep them coming 😁
You are not the best modeller out there. But you are the best for beginners. Everything you show can be done by even a beginner and pushes them up the a „oh wow level“. You dont do a week long chipping or anything else thats horrible time consuming. You show the things that lift the bar for any beginner significantly. Ans you show it well. Thanks for your calm narration style. Two thubs up for the model choice. Well done, you are back on track where you have been (aka your F-22 - which got me into modelling).
@@MaxAfterburner Dont get me wrong, especially not for „not being the best“. Your videos motivate more than those videos where the results are not even close in reach (a week long chipping…). Keep the style you have now. the one when you have been very authentic and highly knowledgeable (F16 for obvious reasons) or where you showed your style of modelling in detail (F22 camouflage pattern templates…).
I was just looking at your channel last night because I haven’t seen and new videos from you in a while, and this morning there you are with this one! Then to my surprise this is the exact same kit I am currently working on. Great job as always.
Hi Avion Air, what a great coincidence! I hope this one steers you clear from any unforeseen landmines, thanks so very much for your support and for watching! 😊
@@MaxAfterburner I just put the clear coat on it to start decals tomorrow. There were some very small delicate pieces but the fit overall was excellent. I have to say the is one of the best kit I have done yet.
To your question about after market cockpit details. I have used photo etched parts from Eduard as I did in my AH-64D. I have some 3D decals from Red Fox for future builds. The details are amazing, and I couldn’t get that much detail on my own. It does take away from the process, but saves time and results are great.
Love your videos! Do you thin Tamiya paint when brush painting? If so, what thinner and at what ratio? Same thinning question for airbrushing Tamiya? Do you usually just use a coat of Tamiya paint as a base instead of using primer? Great job on the AH-64D Apache Longbow.
Hi David, thanks for your questions. I do not thin my paint for hand brushing and I usually keep that to a minimum. For airbrushing, I run with about a 75%/80% paint to 25%/20% thinner. I also use the Tamiya paint as the base coat instead of applying a formal primer coat. For Project #30, I retired my old compressor to the role of a back-up unit and I'll be using a new set up. This change may cause me to re-evaluate my mixing ratios and adjust my airbrushing technique.
@@MaxAfterburner Thank you for answering my questions so quickly. Follow-up questions: What is your thinner of choice and at what approx pressure do you airbrush? Also, have you ever seen the need to use a flow improver and/or dry retarder medium, and if so, which products? Really appreciate your videos and advice.
Hi David, I use the Tamiya X-20A thinner for all my Tamiya paints that need to be diluted down. I don't have a gauge on my old compressor as it is a all-or-none pressure release. My guess is that it runs around 22 psi when the trigger is fully depressed. Finally, I've never used any additives such as an improver or retarder in any of my work thus far. 😉
@@MaxAfterburner Me again with another question. Have you ever used the Mr. Hobby Leveling Thinner with Tamiya paints? Just curious since you indicated you used the Tamiya X-20A thinner. It's my understanding that the leveling thinner is a mix of thinner and a little retarder. Thanks.
Glad you're back. On cockpit details I think photo etch is over rated. Most modern kits have outstanding detail and it's satisfying to make a good cockpit OOB. The only thing I like are photo etch seatbelts, especially for Tamiya kits instead of their cartoon decals for seatbelts. The game changer will be these new 3D detail sets, they look outstanding.
Great to see a new build Max, fantastic job as always! Love the idea of using different colours for the pre-shading, haven't seen that before and it turned out great. As for the cockpit detail sets...they look great but they're costly and I think it's good for us as modelers to learn how to do the fine detail stuff ourselves. But as I'm a useless lazy sod I'd probably buy them anyway! Shame there's not many good ones in 1:72...
Hi Seppington DeStamina , thanks! I'm always trying things out that come to mind. I may use the multi-color pre-shading again if it's called for in another build. 🤔
At round 5:00, you discuss the new full-colour cockpit instrument panels available from Eduard and Kinta Studio simplifying assembly, and raising the issue of the better modellers just using their skills; you ask our input. First, of course, would be free choice depending upon the builder's preference. Some may like them. Others might want the flexibility of making their own decisions as to colour, etc. I am somewhere in the middle. I like illuminating a well-detailed cockpit instrument panel. I could do this with Eduard's PE sets of years past, though they lacked the little coloured lights. These new iterations, however, as gorgeous as they look, lack transparent instruments. Not even the modern digital panels, which would be ideal for just such a treatment, can glow as I would have them. This is remediable: substitute the transparent portions with clear plastic. It might be simpler to make the part clear, then add to this the detailing. Speaking of cockpits and the aftermarket, several of us prefer to build our aircraft models in-flight. This requires 1) a comparably accurate pilot/aviator, or full air crew, as appropriate, 2) closed landing gear bay doors; 3) rotating propeller(s), rotor(s), etc., for those aircraft that have it/them; 4) an unobtrusive support (not a stand that looks like a 100- metre-long telegraph pole jutting down from a graceful, metal bird).
The aftermarket cockpit panels are getting more and more amazing. It may become impossible for the best in the hobbyist community to outdo them. For me, the display stands step down the realism because of their visibility to the overall look, but I understand why the "in-flight" option is desirable. 😎
@@MaxAfterburner , thanks for your reply. In re the stand, we agree: I expressly call for "an unobtrusive support". I have an idea of how one can produce this, borrowing from the concept, process, and apparatus in motion picture production called the Chapman crane.
Hola Max, exelente trabajo como siempre, tengo el mismo modelo aun sin montar, ya me inspire para montarlo al igual que tu, gracias por compartir tu trabajo
Glad to see you back, and with a whirly-bird no less! Have you been well? Your voice sounds a little hoarse in the video. I'm just getting over Covid myself. I have not yet begun to procrastinate on my builds! Peace and love.
Hi TJ, great to hear from you! Actually, I'm well, but the narration aspect continues to be a struggle for me on the videos. Between videos and even takes with no setting changes, there is always variation in the outcomes of my voice. I tend to speak in a higher pitch too when I'm talking into a microphone which I'm trying to tame, so that may be why I sound more hoarse. Hope your health improves quickly and stay safe! 😊
Great to see you back at the desk again. I particularly like your introduction, outlining tools, paints etc. On the 3D cockpit "decals", simply stunning. However, these easy add on details must be taken into account in the contest environment so as to not penalise the modeller who goes to the trouble of "hand detailing" as there are some simply stunning cockpit detailers out there.
It’s that music is subjective…if I may suggest, Flory Models, Greg’s Models, Doogs models, & Nigels Modelling Bench, which was recently was served with a copy write notice for using music. I am more interested in the “How” you got that certain effect, what did you use? Take it for what its worth, obviously your followers don’t mind the music, seems more work for you?
Hi Robert, I feel that my videos are more for entertainment than tutorials as those you mentioned and others are much better modelers than me. I look at my YT analytics and most viewers skip through 70% of the video just to see the finished product anyway. 😲
The yellow strip lights are referred to as slime lights. They are used under NVGs. They are also not that bright of a yellow. More of a dull yellow green.
Love watching your paint work. Wish you would do an instruction video on acrylic paint. I always used Model Master enamel and have just started using Tamiya Acrylic. So many questions :)
Hey Richard, there's probably a great number of videos out there I'm sure by more experienced airbrush painters. Those might be more instructive than my amateur methods. 🤔🤭
I just this for my son not knowing it was a kit, it will take over a week to have thin cement delivered and they are out of stock at Walmart. Can i use super glue? Loctite epoxy?
@@MaxAfterburner ahh i see ok thankyou! I used to build these with my dad and brother, its a pleasant surprise. I watched most the video but I was at work... How long would you say the entire project takes? How many minutes do you clamp the pieces together? Thankyou
If I'm not procrastinating, one these would take ~40 hours from start to finish. A couple of hours minimum of clamping usually, but I tend to clamp and set aside for a day or more because I'm in no rush.
Had been built the 1/72 Hasegawa AH-64D a year ago. A fun build and hoping to build another helicopter model (a UH-1H or an S-70i) if the needed after-market decals are available so, what's the next build? Are there any polls again for new builds in the near future?
Hi Bryan, I was in the process of firewalling my throttle of effort by working on 6 different videos simultaneously. However, YT hit my channel with a permanent warning in early June (they refuse explanation, leaving me to guess) -- effectively throwing a turkey buzzard down my intake and causing a compressor stall and flameout. I'm in a dead-stick condition and I have been unable to re-light my engine. I had a number of projects lined up, but I'm having a difficult time moving with some purpose forward because of their attack on this channel. I will say that my next model project is 30% completed and involves a U.S. Navy aircraft best known for its carrier-based operations. 🤞 I would look to my Rumble channel to see it released on a more timely basis.
@@MaxAfterburner "A US Navy aircraft best known for its carrier-based operations". Lemme guess, it's either the following: 1. E-2C or D Hawkeye 2. S-3 Viking 3. RF-8 Crusader 4. F-14A
@@MaxAfterburner 😁😁😁. Unlikely the F-14A since you have already the F-14D and a "new" 1/48 F-14A from Tamiya is still not out. It's unlikely the RF-8 since you have the A-7 already. So it's either the Hawkeye or the Viking for your next build
Hi Jesse, I run my dilutions at a higher paint to thinner ratio than most modelers for airbrushing. My paint is 70-80% to 30-20% thinner. Other modelers may go 60-40%.
Good to know my kit that had 1.5 mm shift in fuselage details between the halfs was an isolated issue and maybe i can come back to this kit just buying a new one. I don't know why but the one i was putting together had warped bottom panels, shifted details, undermolded details in front of the cockpit and overall the quality control was very poor

Hi paulwalpole6103, interesting subjects to work on for a change of pace, but not particularly popular viewership-wise. I hope you have great fun with whatever you choose 👍😊
Greeblie (Greeble?) nirvana - I have found interesting combinations can be had using your scavenging capabilities, decorative skills, and a modicum of luck plus a pile of scrap computer circuit boards and you have some hyperrealistic, not accurate but awesome looking cockpits. Little diode ridden chunks can be removed with a Dremel for tight work but for demolition I like aircraft tin snips, cuts the boards close. IC Chips when cut by side cutters leave behind the solder joints to act as switches around the IC Chip LCD or CRT monitors. Anyway pretty much everybody has a PC or old laptop lying around they'd love to give you for free or $5.00. Don't forget in the CD's, HD's And DVD's are small low power motors and on some of the DVD's there are micro stepper motors attached to the trays. Power supplies harvest small, medium and large capacitors for use as barrels and the like - but please read about discharging capacitors or you're in for a shockingly painful night - even if they've been unplugged for months .

Hi Iron Spike, that's my thoughts on my model presentations. However, when I read it from someone else, it sounds horrible 😂
😉
Your work is awesome.
Unbelievable model , done so right .
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cool video .
Hi Mike, I most appreciate your statements! Glad you've been entertained! 😊
What a nice surprise to wake up to!
Hi Charlie, glad it started your day off right! 😄
awsome work as always keeep them coming
Hi Gilbert, thanks, I appreciate the encouragement! 😊
Max keep up the good work! Enjoy your videos! Greetings from Holland
Hi Nick, thanks much for your nice message from far away! 🌷
I love your videos and cannot wait to watch whenever a new one is posted! keep them coming, you're the best model channel on TH-cam!
Hi Christian, thanks much for the high praise! 😄
To your question about after market cockpit details. I have used photo etched parts from Eduard as I did in my AH-64D. I have some 3D decals from Red Fox for future builds. The details are amazing, and I couldn’t get that much detail on my own. It does take away from the process, but saves time and results are great.
Hi Avion, yes, there's no doubt that these 3D cockpit decal sets are gorgeous!
Fuck yeah mate this was awesome to watch, hope you have a beautiful week
Hi Macree, thanks, have good one 😉
amazing work
Hi Jason, much appreciated, thanks for stopping by 😇
Love your videos!
Thanks.

Great job!!! I loved.
Big hug.

Thanks Luiz Augusto da Silva Junior! 😃
Great job!
Hi Lance T. , thanks for watching and for your continued viewership! 😇
Huzzah, good to see a new one, Max ^-^
Hi Foab Moab, thanks for your continuous support! 😄
@@MaxAfterburner Sure thing ^-^/
Awesome video, much appreciated
Hi Nathan, I'm very glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Haven't built mine yet. Great build although I prefer a much lighter shade.
Hi Mauro, the look can change much between the video and the still camera on my paint job for this Apache helicopter -- for some reason 🚁🤔
great work!!
Hi РЖУНИМАГУ!!1! Thank you and cheers! 😃
Nice work,very good paint job.🤩
Hi Larry, thanks! The exterior look seems to change so much depending on the lighting that it appears to be a different model at times. 🤔
Two of these AH-64 Longbow Apache's flew over and I could hear them for miles in the Distance
Hi Craig, thanks, I sure appreciate your thoughts on this. I hope more will chime in to give us all a better sampling 🙂
Great work as always.
You guys could have seen this almost two months ago on Rumble... just sayin'.
Hi allanpeters, thanks, and yup! 😊
Yeah most of them are all decal cockpits and I hate them
Nice, almost as splotchy as the real thing. I hear they make a decal for those odd Army canopy frame lines.
Another quality video
Much appreciated, thanks for the kind comment! 😃
Another superb build up, a little too green on the final colour for me though 😉
Thank you! Cheers! 😉
Hola Luis, Muchas gracias. Espero que esto ayude! 😃
Seguro que si
Hi Clyde, excellent point on the handcrafted vs. the ready-to-use in a contest environment. Thanks for your kind comments on my videos! 😃
Great video!
Hi Devil Dog Dot Games, thank you so very much! Semper fi! 😃
More of a dull yellow green.
yup
Watching here friend
😄
Welcome back!
Thanks Ian N., great to hear from you again! 😃
Hi Joe, you can use super glue, but it won't be as clean and neat as the thin cement.
By first flight do you mean the first time someone threw that kit out of a window? I built it...not a beginner build.
It's tough at times 🤔
Welcome back
Hi Shlomper! 😉
Had been built the 1/72 Hasegawa AH-64D a year ago. A fun build and hoping to build another helicopter model (a UH-1H or an S-70i) if the needed after-market decals are available
so, what's the next build?
Lemme guess, it's either the following:
1. E-2C or D Hawkeye
2. S-3 Viking
3. RF-8 Crusader
4. F-14A
Bryan - That's why I don't like giving you clues! One of those is correct! 😆
Stop it! 😉
How do you thin the paint for air brushing
Hi Jesse, I run my dilutions at a higher paint to thinner ratio than most modelers for airbrushing. My paint is 70-80% to 30-20% thinner. Other modelers may go 60-40%.
Good job 👏
Hi 1 Dragon, thank you! Cheers! 😃
Hey michakrupowicz8901, sorry to hear you got a bad production unit. A "normal" Apache kit should not be such a disappointment. 🤔
Is this kit still available to buy
Hi jordanpadua6331, most likely. Just shop around online or check with your local hobby store.
Nice work!! But I bet I can out blooper you lol. Those tiny pieces are a pain especially when I’m tired my hand will shake makes everything ten times harder 😂 makes for a very long blooper reel.
Hi Ponz, yep, the smaller the pieces, the greater the drop-and-chase! I have another ship build coming up soon somewhere in the next three project videos. Plenty of blooper potential with the PE alone 😅

how tall is your model built?

Hi Fábio, maybe one day 😉
Ha…I’m also working on this kit. I started it last week and am just finishing the cockpit.
Hi Brian, it's amazing how many have commented that they're working on the same model! I hope a few items mentioned in the video might help you out 😃
Love the video i`ve liked and subbed. Feel free too talk and share your wisdom right the way through the video; and just leave the music out. Thanks James
I want one. Not done a helicopter yet but it will be between this and a Huey.
Hi Rick, thanks for the tip! I don't think I've ever heard of this method before. 🤔
"I am the greatest!"
