For old times sake, I would enjoy one of your refurbishment, restoration, repair, renew projects on a sad, sorry piece of furniture that is begging for your special touch, attention to detail, concise explanations! 💜💜💜
One piece of advice: When you try to do use the router on such a thin piece, clamp another piece flush with the first piece to increase the surface area your router rests on. It's much safer and your cut will be cleaner because the router will be more stable.
A great video once again. One tip I would give is to order an extra fence for the router from their spare parts list, then you can use both fences at the same time, one on either side of the work piece. I know this works on a lot of routers however it is worth checking first that the rods are long enough and if there are holes on both sides of the router base.
Them yellow shorts again! Gonna have to have a word with Ria about them getting “lost” when she does the washing!! Nice job on the gates though, looking forward to seeing them hung. Stay safe x
Nice one, thanks for sharing the nifty design cutting the braces into the centre rail. Much as I'm enjoying my foray into woodwork, I'm not yet very good at conceptualising joinery, so I find explanations like that really helpful... On another note, I see the battery in your drill lat 12'07" looks suspiciously similar to the dimensions of Parkside's 12V, so I wonder... On another another note, shelled out £140 inc. VAT & delivery for 20 decking boards 140 x 28 x 2400 mm from Wickes (I know, I know) last week. Cheers.
😁 Thanks Keith. Another great video. I've just received a massive haul of deck boards for a couple of projects so this was a well timed video 😁. Thanks again... wait a minute... where is Mickey ??? 🤣🤣
Nice job! I once tried DIY, I hit my thumb with a hammer, stood in a paint tray, and nearly cut my fingers off with a jigsaw. That was all in a few hours, and that was when I realised it wasn't for me.
The gates look very nice in the finished photo Keith, great use of the reclaimed decking. The diagonal braces let into the wood look impressive as well as being stronger. Tony
Great little video mr and too see you use reclaimed timbers a lot of work stripping down but l think it’s worth it good too see you use the router l love my Milwaukee m18 router but I must admit I have not used the spiral bits l must look into them take care 👍👏👏
Great video again kieth. Been after some gate inspiration as it were for wee while. They look good. Can't wait see the fit and the other upcoming projects 👍🏴
I ruined a screwdriver I'd had for yeras taking out rusty screws that had been in some fence wood I was salvaging - using a pair of pliers or a vice grip is a good idea. Good video.
Great video.I really like how you are able to build something new out of recycling old timber. The gates are looking really good and the way you think things thru like the bracing of the larger gates as the timber was not long enough is excellent.Look forward to episode 2.Thanks for the link to the wood preserver i deffo need some.As for favours to the wife i think you should clean the oven and do the washing up for a week.lol 👍
Great video Keith and lots of useful info on the design. Always good to see wood being reclaimed and reused. The links are really useful - too shame there wasn't a link to those shorts.

Ok. So I'm gonna have to go back and watch this again. Really nice build. Love the use of the decking boards. Which has inspired something else for me.. I cannot find anyone local to make gates. Live in a council house and there were no gates on the driveway. I looked for years and couldn't find anyone. I don't have the money to get someone to do it now but I'd still like some. Ours would be way smaller than the ones you made. Just for a driveway. Yeah definitely churning ideas with those decking boards now. Defo have to go watch again and pay proper attention. Thank you so much. Have you ever made a screen door? That's a project I want to tackle soon. Really soon with this great weather and two kittens who are only getting vaccinated next week! I'm melting!
Pinapple shorts! :D But no, I actually have a serious question/discussion point. Perhaps an idea for the podcast. When you say that using salvaged materials made for a substantial saving, I guess you haven´t factored in your time spent salvaging/preparing the materials. If you were to "pay yourself" a decent hourly rate for it. Would it still be a substantial saving? I find that kind of hard to belive, even with timber prices as they are now. Of course some types of material are easier to salvage than others. And don´t get me wrong, I all for the environmental aspect for using salvaged materials. Cheers and thanks for a great video.
Hi Keith Just out of curiosity, I was wondering which wood filler you used to fill the holes. Also, if you had to cut the old gates in half to get them to your workshop, how are you going to get them back to your auntie. Great little project and the gates turned out really good.👍
Great questions. The filler was just a test mixed one, it said exterior and interior on the tub but realistically I'm not sure how well it will hold up, it'll be interesting to find out. It's somewhat protected by the stain so maybe it'll do ok. Luckily my auntie's neighbour was able to pick up the gates, which saved a lot of hassle, couldn't have got them on my roof rack, so hiring a van was going to be the plan but now sorted
Depending on nothing getting in the way if you drop the broad at 2:00 flush to the workbench your have loads more reference surface and you can run your router fence against your vice jaws.
Another great video mate, ive been dreaming up some small gates for part of my garden, and this video has definitely come in handy. Will have to rewatch it closer to our summer here though haha! Cheers
I'm building gates next week, 2 driveway and 1 side gate, can't say im looking forward to it. But will be half lap joints, are the other gates you made holding up okay?
Good job thanks for sharing....... Now the devil in me was waiting for you to say "after finishing the gates I had to cut them in half to deliver them back to my auntie" 😂😂 Oh by the way, thank you Keith for recommending Ben's channel Hew and Awe.
Nice project so far. Looking forward to seeing how you go about hanging these gates. I've hung two large gates on two occasions and I have a 'trick' of my own for doing it :) Mind you, it was just two gates, not three . . . . . . . :)

Yeah miss those videos
Dressing table and two wardrobes still on my to do list and in storage waiting ...

Great use of masking tape to illustrate cut locations and direction (5:30). Very effective way to illustrate what you’re explaining.
Cheers
Doin a good job Keith all the best with it, have a nice day Mate !!!.
Cheers Brian
Yay the yellow boxers are back!😆. Great video Keith thanks, your explanations are always easily understood.
Loved every second , a Great tutorial

Great job with salvaged wood.

love a good salvage! 👌🤓
Delighted the yellow shorts got a run out. Not seen them for a while
Personally i Use rachet strap to replace long clamps works well.

Pretty nice work, Keith! The gates look fantastic! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you
Nice bit of repurposing again there mate. Good to see you trying to get on with the router. Keep at it. 😉👌
Thank you mate!

Great job. Love this type of video 👍🏼
i made a huge misrake with "expansion gap" on the claddingf on my shed. it never expanded it shrunk.
Nice project, Keith! I made a small shed once using tongue and groove boards, didn't line up as neatly as your boards, haha!
Thank you

Really good, I've used decking timber on some fencing, doesn't look too bad and much cheaper.
Love you video....wondered what camera and editing software you use. Thanks
Thanks. See here for info th-cam.com/video/cOHJaCbmP3Q/w-d-xo.html
Onya Keefy 🎉
Someone been watching Gid 🤣
Would half lap joints work with gates that are not so large... Say around 2M opening. Or even dowels?
th-cam.com/video/mXRYLFJey7Y/w-d-xo.html I used them here..
I'm building gates next week, 2 driveway and 1 side gate, can't say im looking forward to it. But will be half lap joints, are the other gates you made holding up okay?
Yeah half lap gates holding up just fine 👍

Haha!!! Thank you
👍👍👍
I thought you bought a Domino? Did you decide to sell it?
Not enough depth of cut for this size of gates unfortunately, unless you have the big domino
Routers cannot use them for love nor money
Nice project so far. Looking forward to seeing how you go about hanging these gates. I've hung two large gates on two occasions and I have a 'trick' of my own for doing it :) Mind you, it was just two gates, not three . . . . . . . :)
Cheers
Routing the m&t? Should have got your domino out, would have been much quicker and easier.
Not enough depth of cut for gates this big, hence using the router
Who read it as "Bill Gates" and sighed?
Noooo! Not the wood preservative!!! Don’t do it Keith!!!!! Nooooooooooooooooo……….
🤣 more money down the drain
