- Caracal or Big Floppa is a wild cat that has a strong hunting instinct, that's why they are aggressive cats even though they have been trained as pets from a young age.
We may indeed be able to buy caracals as pets freely, but it depends on the policies of each country because actually, this is a cat that is quite rare in nature.

Still, the learning curve needed for me to accurately interpret their hissing is steeper than my organs and extremities could afford.
I prefer to keep my blood inside my body. I’m old fashioned that way.
Interesting. I wondered about that, because Luna (that glamorous black leopard who lives in Siberia?) hisses quite alot and it doesn't seem equivalent to hissing from a house cat. Her parents refer to it as grumbling, which really does seem to fit the situation. With house cats it's much more serious. Now I'll have to find some caracal videos so that I can decode this behavior better.

You put it perfectly. It's a status symbol. People get these cats for social media, and similar cats closely related to wild cats or wild cats themselves.
One of my pet cats, a more common variety of housecat, was rejected by several families because of a few slight imperfections caused by a fire. Otherwise healthy. They clearly wanted a 'perfect' cat for the instagrams. I am thankful because I was able to get this loving kitty but those people make me sick.
Not everyone tho. Many get them from zoos or wild as they are sick and cant go back. But its REALLY special cases and new owners are usually already professionals.

Caracal hissing isn't always a thing of aggression. While in this vid it definitely is in some of those vids with adults, Caracals can't meow or anything like that. They literally growl and hiss at EVERYTHING, even as a happy sound.

There's just not a chance that you can give a majestic cat like this enough space and activity that their wild cat instincts and needs calls for, making it unsafe for both spicy cat and owner. A large cat like this can cause so much more injury than your average house cat simply due to size and strength difference

That particular caracal (Pumba) is known to be highly aggressive even by caracal standards. There are videos on youtube of far less aggressive caracals

Yeaaa, I heard somewhere that caracals will usually communicate through hissing and other aggressive sounds/gestures, even if they like or trust you. I can't verify for myself, but it'd explain why they always hiss like that

Communication, yes, but it's an aggressive behavior for sure. Especially when they charge like that or handling food. We had A few litters and a stray. You learn quick what is aggression and play, defending territory.
When I swear at someone and threaten him it's still communication. Also, it was always an agressive warning in this video.

Ok quick lesson to anyone who wants to learn and doesn't just tries to be a contrarian for internet points.
Cats don't see humans as humans. They see as us cats. Cat biting or scratching human, isn't being aggressive or dangerous. It plays with human liek it plays with other cats, as there is no human for a cat, just big ass bald cat.
And Caracals DO communicate via hissing, same way Rotteweilers may end up communicating via growling. And no amount of comments will change those facts.

@@grit1679I saw that clip before, apparently that caracal had it’s claws removed. So a little safer than it looks. Removing the claws is very painful for the caracal though, since it’s like removing the top bone of our fingers.
