  • In the manuscript of the "Trois morceaux en forme de poire" for four-hand piano (1903), Satie added this marginal note: « Manière de Commencement : Gnossienne extraite du "Fils des Étoiles". Fut composée en 1891. »
    The seventh Gnossienne was indeed composed in 1891, included in the first act of "Le Fils des Étoiles" the same year, and then reused in the beginning of "Trois morceaux en forme de poire" in 1903.

    I'll always remember this piece as sound as if you are walking through a cool dark forest of dying trees, but slowly realize all the trees are legs of a giant insect.

      Turns out, as people are saying only the three first gnossiennes were titled as such by satie and the ones up to 6 had no title. This is a legitimate gnossienne apparently and probably the fourth ig if we dont count the others

      @@aunox5657 4-6 really sound like leitmotifs to 1-3 so it makes sense that they were given the name Gnossienne even if it wasn't Satie himself

    Il y a chez Erik Satie un je ne sais quoi qui invite au repos et à la rêverie, loin du bruit et de la fureur. Musique d'utilité publique dans un monde troublé comme le nôtre...

    Dear friend, thank you so much for this piece. Because i really love gnossienne n°7 and this is the best version in my opinion. And i love Satie's works. I'm really glad. Thanks from Turkey.

      Same, I always have fun playing it. Sometimes I had the last chord from the "Trois morceaux en forme de poire" version.

      @@godfrieds2078 I have never stumbled upon a 2-hand version of the "Trois morceaux en forme de poire", maybe has it been transcribed and is selling on some music e-shop, I haven't checked really, worth a try to look on such websites.

    After playing the first 3, this one is my next challenge.
    I have to say the very first line is quite exotic : the chords seem quite unnatural and chaotic. But then, it turns very calm, and you feel the real spirit of the gnossiennes :)

      Best gnossienne for me, and best part of the Trois Morceaux en Forme de Poire.

      I'm mostly a jazz player homestly, and the first four bars truly felt like home! such a beautiful piece

      @@oddsockfreya Agreed, imagine if he had developped pieces in this style. Years later, he would play some Jelly Roll Morton to his friends.
      "In 1918, a jazz band performed in France, at the Casino de Paris (Cocteau talks about it in Le Coq et l'arlequin). However, as early as 1916, Satie was playing Jelly Roll Morton for his friends. The conductor Ernest Ansermet (who would lead Parade), the same year, had brought back jazz records from New Orleans, which Satie had no doubt heard, but the first recordings by Morton (who claimed to be the inventor of jazz) date from 1923. However , Morton had come to Paris in 1914, and Satie had been able to hear him on that occasion. He would later note in a notebook, among all sorts of quips and strange reflections, this sentence which seems to me to be one of the most fair on the beautiful:
      'Jazz tells us about its pain - & "we don't care"... That's why it's beautiful, real...' "

    Satie riutilizza i suoi temi in diverse opere, è come fosse un work in progress, alla maniera di Ives, e in parte lo aveva già fatto Liszt.

    Aren't the first chords before 0:17 part of the other part of the entire piece where this gnossienne was placed?

      @eriksatieofficiel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes they are, but it seems like Satie wanted to use them as in an intro to the gnossienne.
