This music gave me so much comfort when my dad died suddenly. I played it going through his empty house, looking for him. He wasn’t there and the feeling was desolate, but the music helped. 😢
Not that I am a skilled musician or an expert but I do love hearing people taking on Erik Satie on Gnosiennes and Gymnopedie. This is one of the finest examples on youtube, sounds way better than your Gymnopedie take for some reason. I wish I could listen to you live. Best of luck, you are a magician.
This hits different. A masterclass. Satie was getting back to life during this sequence. You could feel its mysterious and quirky presence in the room.
The sound is delightful, and de and the cinematic of the video is simple, deep, and the lighting dim enough to capture the viewer along with the music.
First time I've heard Satie played with any rubato, but this brings out a roughness and alien feeling to the already cold and distant Gnossiennes. Really well done.
Great sound for a Movie..I see a house in Indochina..I go nearer...I roam around it and see all the toys on a Porch, an open Door...and it is so easy to imagine images with this type of wondering , tentative music...
I immediately liked the colours, the lighting and the camera angles. It feels very intimate, but for me the Gnossiennes always sounded not very intimate, but rather introspective and also a bit distanced. But this setting makes them more "revealing". Also very comfy piano chair ^^ Thank you for uploading this very beautiful recording of Satie!
Very nice rendering of these pieces that Satie ironically enough wrote as background music and didn’t want people to listen to. And here we are scrolling YT to actively listen to pianists playing them. 😊
Foarte talentat, bravo!
I appreciated this, to watch your technique, balanced tempo, the slower the better, Satie was also about listening to the silences! One of only a few to put a live recording on TH-cam. Many thanks.
Erik Satie's Gnossiennes are some of the pieces that got me into classical music. I enjoyed your performance a lot. Also your paino has a really nice tone.
Me deleito felizmente apreciando seu distinto trabalho. Continue a compartilhar 🙏
Beautiful, I always rip apart youtube pianists for their rendition of famous pieces like a snob want a be intellectual. Its hard to beat some of these recordings especially if it was the first you heard and fell in love with times over. I never thought about playing Gnossenes like this and its just so resonant and brilliant. I hope to one day interpit a piece unique and superior to famous recordings like you just did. I never loved Gnossines until now. Have you ever heard "Pieces Froides"?
A wonderful performance Lazar. Thanks for sharing your music on TH-cam. I’m curious to know which Gnossienne the most difficult? For me no. 5 is a real challenge with all the changing chords, and crazy right hand, and key change in the middle! But it is beautiful. No 3 is fantastic. Well done. Long live Satie!
Satie's example guided a new generation of French composers away from post-Wagnerian impressionism towards a sparer, terser style. Among those influenced by him during his lifetime were Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, and Francis Poulenc, and he is seen as an influence on more recent composers such as John Cage and John Adams. His harmony is often characterised by unresolved chords, he sometimes dispensed with bar-lines, as in his Gnossiennes, and his melodies are generally simple and often reflect his love of old church music. He gave some of his later works absurd titles, such as Veritables Preludes flasques (pour un chien) ("True Flabby Preludes (for a Dog)", 1912), Croquis et agaceries d'un gros bonhomme en bois ("Sketches and Exasperations of a Big Wooden Man", 1913) and Sonatine bureaucratique ("Bureaucratic Sonatina", 1917). Most of his works are brief, and the majority are for solo piano. Exceptions include his "symphonic drama" Socrate (1919) and two late ballets Mercure and Relâche (1924). Satie never married, and his home for most of his adult life was a single small room, first in Montmartre and, from 1898 to his death, in Arcueil, a suburb of Paris. He adopted various images over the years, including a period in quasi-priestly dress, another in which he always wore identically coloured velvet suits, and is known for his last persona, in neat bourgeois costume, with bowler hat, wing collar, and umbrella. He was a lifelong heavy drinker, and died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 59. Source..Wikipedia
I really like your interpretation. Your choice of tempo and dynamics are those I prefer the most. However, what edition are you using? I hear a couple of things quite different from usual: a couple of slurs missing in no1 (which lead to repeating notes) and a whole passage missing in no4 ...
Hello! I use some 2006 edition from imslp. I checked the slurs and it looks like it is all played how its written... but about nr 4, you are right!! :)) crazy... not me, not the sound engineer noticed that... but as I said, was a late evening, and we did more of an experiment, it was not intended to be the best recording, maybe I will do another one though :) thanks for feedback!
@@MarcelLazar Hi! Thanks for answering! Yes, I had seen that edition (Les Edition Outremontaises ?). I rejected it immediately because they strangely added the bar lines! Something stranger than the Satie's decision of not using them ;-) (I think he - Pierre Gouin - used some editing software that required them, but, hey!) Actually, a first time (1 bar after "questionnez") the slur is missing, while the second time (1 bar after "postulez en vous-meme") it is there. You play them accordingly. But I think it is a (minor?) error of the editor. All the other editions I know have the slur in both places and, in all the interpretations I've heard, the F is never repeated after the appoggiatura. That's why I immediately got the difference. Just compare to the other editions you can find on IMSLP (Salabert, Peters) and other executions on TH-cam. With respect to the missing section in No4... it may happen :-) Even Reinbert de Leew missed a long passage in No4 in a late live recording (11:10 here th-cam.com/video/5bIeYqpn0Gk/w-d-xo.html). ;-) But one does not judge the interpretations from these things ! So sorry to hear about your dad, and sorry that you had to go through this pain. May God rest his soul.
No. 4 is simply not of this world. That was a joy to listen to

Thanks!! You know, just a small change in the mood of the pianist can change also the sound :)
😢😢😢
This transported me out of my body to another realm.
Satie does that to you.
I just discovered Satie's music. I'm impressed.
This hits different. A masterclass. Satie was getting back to life during this sequence. You could feel its mysterious and quirky presence in the room.
I really like the way you break the tempos up between phrases. It adds emotion to the music
Just beautiful, a perfect composition... not just the soothing piece of Satie, but the dim light, the piano, the person playing. Thank you
I love listening to this. The face twitch in Gnossienne 4 was cute.
I can't express how much relaxation I feel whenever I see your channel, thank you so much ❤
Lovely…just lovely❤ I’m in my early 70’s and back at piano lessons again. I’m currently studying #3 at the moment! Thank you for the inspiration
The entire piece was so relaxing. It was always like I was expecting someone to shout saying dinner is ready. Zz
Merveilleuse musique merveilleuse interprétation bravo l'artiste merci😊
Satie just changed everything...so many great ones who came after him were influenced by him. Lovely performance and fine videography!
Danke mein Freund.

You and this piano just sound like a miracle.
Perfect tempo and beautiful expression. Thank you for this lovely gift.

Incredible Playing … the mastery of Satie in the hands of Mr Marcel 👏🏻👍
I wish you would play je te veux by the same composer

This is a beautiful performance!

Very impressive! 👏🏼
Like a giant cosy hug to the listeners! 🤗 Thank you for such an atmospheric performance! 🫧
Heerlijke uitvoering. Inspirerend doorvoeld. Meesterstuk - meesterlijke uitvoerder.
First time I've heard Satie played with any rubato, but this brings out a roughness and alien feeling to the already cold and distant Gnossiennes. Really well done.
I love so much all in this video - the perfect clear sound, picture, your movements.
Amazing…thank you SO much for sharing ❤
Herzlichstes Dankeschön!
What a lovely performance!

Merci

Yes, the "normal" piano chair was making a lot of noise, so I chose the comfy silent one 😁
I’ve never seen a piano chair with a back! Is that allowed? 👀 😄 🎶
Fantastic music 🎹🎶
Indeed! :)

Hermosa interpretación. Greetings from Chile...

Very good Played, a great Video and Sound
I love how the playing looks like a guy using 2 fingers to type. Subtle, matter of fact, very efficient and precise.
Gracias!
Amazing just amazing
Wonderful playing, sir! The sound is so good.
Great work

Wow
Your timing of this piece is great. I’ve heard versions where it’s too fast or slow. Messes it up for me. Nice job
Agreed, Marcel gets it perfectly.
Very beautifully played, did you know there is a 7th Gnossienne?
