Amtgard was started at the university in El Paso Texas around 82 or so. It started off a single shot event called Attila the Huns birthday party. I dont remember the guys name, its been 2 decades since I heard it last, but he went nuts and wandered off to become a drifter. Sir Ivar Nefarious and Sir Aramithris where both there and Ivar was my knight. There was a write up drifting around back in the early 90's with a well written history of Amtgard. If you can dig up Aramithirs or Ivars email I am sure they would be happy to tell you about it.
Peter Le Grue was the guy. It was said that he was familiar with Dagohir and SCA rules. So the weapons are from Dagohir for the most part. The titles and knighthoods were from the SCA. He basically charged each week to play the game. It became popular and the early players (Tawnee, Nashomi, Heimdale) pushed him out because of the whole grift thing. Then others like Aramithris and Ivar helped grow the game with new rulebooks, and branching out across the country and the world. I've been here in El Paso since 85-86.
