How to Fix Packet Loss when it is your ISPs Fault

  • For anyone else having packet loss, and you were able to confirm it wasn't a problem with your computer or equipment, below are the steps I recommend taking:
    1. When you call your ISP to complain, make sure you say something along the lines of: I work from home and I am having severe packet loss which is hindering my job performance. This should make them schedule a Resident Tech to come out and diagnose the problem ASAP.
    2. When the Resident Tech comes out, make sure to talk to them and be very elaborate on everything you know, because most likely the agent you talked to on the phone didn't give them all the info. Make sure to reiterate as much as necessary that the packet loss is not with your equipment.
    3. Now this is a big step: Make sure that they run the packet loss test that they run on the neighborhood box for at least 10 - 15 mins. The previous Resident Techs that came out only ran the test for a minute or so and said they didn't see packet loss. The Resident Tech that confirmed the packet loss ran the test for over 10 mins, and said he didn't see the packet loss till after 5 mins running the test, and that the packet loss he saw was the highest he has ever seen (5.8% Loss). The test this Resident Tech ran was called a DOCSIS test, so if you want to sound super smart make sure you clarify to your tech that that is the test you want them to run for packet loss. If the packet loss isn't with your equipment then they should see the issue after doing this test. If they still are not seeing the issue, ask them to see the results of the packet loss test, and make sure they ran the test with at least 10,000 packet sent:

    If you confirm they ran the test for at least that long and they still are not seeing packet loss, then you should probably let that Resident Tech leave, and live to fight another day. Double check to make sure the packet loss isn't your equipment again (also, you can watch the youtube video I linked below to troubleshoot packet loss), and if you are still sure it isn't your equipment then wait a week or so and try getting another Resident Tech to come out and run the test again -- maybe they just came out at a time your internet didn't have packet loss.
    If you get a resident tech to confirm your packet loss and they still aren't scheduling a node split then report your ISP to the FCC:

    Hope this helps some other people out! It took me 8 years to get past the Resident Tech stage!

    I actually fixed my packet loss thanks to this video, I showed evidence to the tech of packet loss and I was lucky enough that he really cared about it, he went to my neighborhood box and told me that he moved me from an old connector that was having issues to a new one and told me to reset the modem, after that no more packet loss, $100 dollars deserved.

    I’m actually so thankful you made this video. I play video games a lot and I take them very competitively, as I like to be the best at every game I play which includes playing tournaments and trying to win money. Any I joined the AirForce earlier this year and I’m now stationed and live on a small base in Texas. They unfortunately only offer one ISP here called Suddenlink communications and they are TERRIBLE. I get all the same issues you were having and more! From packet loss to ping spikes and just flat out cutting out constantly. Anyway just like you I’ve tried everything on my end from VPN’s to paying almost $1000 on a new router and modem to getting new cables and also having many technicians and making many trouble shooting phone calls and nothing is working. It has helped some but not nearly enough. Anyway I have yet like my 5th technician in 3 months come out tomorrow and I will definitely be using the advice and steps you have provided in this video. Just sucks that I’m in this position and I have no other options because I’m in the military.

    Been dealing with the SAME EXACT issue for 2 years now with Cox. I am in an apartment complex which doesn't help but I've had multiple techs, multiple modems, complaints, etc. They always say, "there's no sign of packet loss on our end." But it literally happens every day when I'm gaming. Crazy thing is, there will be certain periods with ZERO problems. I once had a full 2 months of ZERO packet loss. Now it's back again and I just don't get it.

You gotta push these guys. I feel like it’s almost like they conserve the best connection but if your paying you have to get what your paying for. So call them and complain until it’s resolved.     I've been dealing with this same issue for close to 7 years. Paying for 150 mbps down/8 up, and getting 3.5 mbps down/4.5 up, 10-100% packet loss, via Suddenlink. Filed a complaint with the FCC two days ago. Hopefully I get the same results as you. Thanks for making the video.

    Update. Once I jumped through all of Cox communications hoops. They are giving me an 80% discount until their node split in July ANNNND this is back paid through the day I started the ticket. Which is about 6 months ago. Reason it’s taking so long is construction permits in my city. Which is understandable during rona BS. I can’t tell how thankful I am. you are directly the reason I’ll be paying an 80% discount on my internet plan well into the end of this year. Bruh. They REALLLY don’t like the FCC complaint comments. You could probably just skip through all of it and threaten them with it immediately if you’re ok with being a complete arsehole to the customer reps lol. But they don’t deserve it. The company does.

    I never had this Packet Loss in my Life I had 2 Modems in the Passed it all were good then all of a sudden I changed if to a Arris SB8200 Modem it started dropping Connections once then don't know what happened after this

    bro how long does it take for a node split? I called the Executive Escalations number from their reply on my FCC report and they said they don’t have one planned for my area but i’ve been getting constant jitter spikes and packet loss throughout the day, sometimes my upload tanks.

      Go to Xbox network, test network speed & statistics. It should show you the packet loss.

    You guys could break that neighborhood box in the middle of the night that way everyone calls because the internet is down. They would have to replace the box with a New box thus eliminating packet loss. You guys are very fucking welcome. This method is much faster than calling and getting the run around that everything is fine.

    Yeah he's got a point I had problems with my internet off and on for a long time and it took me to complain to the FCC for them to come out and do something so complain to him make them document everything and show them you do a packet of a pain test and show them that you have packet loss show it to them have them documented and then you go to the FCC if they continue not to fix the problem you make a complaint to them on your your internet provider and they will make them go and fix it only way to do it buddy

    We would have good Internet in America if there weren’t laws restricting where ISPs can provide service. The big cable companies have a stranglehold on the market. I can’t think of any other market where so few companies have total control and agree not to compete.

      The longer an ethernet cable is, the more likely it is to have problems. Before going through all of this hassle, just try getting a shorter ethernet cable.

    I just bought the new Xbox series x and never had packet loss with the Xbox x I just had. I run the diagnostic test and it shows 0% packet loss but when I play apex it has the 3 red boxes indicating packet loss. I’m confused, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

      It took the FFC 18 days to respond to my original email. This is what I said in my email to the FCC:
      I have had Packet loss on my internet line ever since I started service with Cox about a year ago. They have never fixed this issue, even after following all the instructions they gave me (change modem to Cox modem; had multiple technicians come out and verify connection was fine).

    Im currently on year 4, spectrum business internet for 200 a month... just now figuring this all out. Got tech her legit today 3 hours ago, was here for 40 mins, confirmed packet loss, and ping jitter. 20 mins later a truck was outside my house working on. Line. Kept loosing internet, now i see they working their way down the street. Randomly still loosing internet. Tech said everything should be perfect and fixed, usually after 74 hours max. I am praying they are fixing the issue as they go down the line. Cause as of now. Fucking hell!!!

    I have decent connection 940Mbps download & 25 upload my in game ping usually 14-16ms but Boy fornite so unplayable for me even with a low ping I never get packet loss

      It shouldn't cost anything. Your ISP should do it for free once they confirm your connection needs it. Getting them to confirm your connection needs a node split is the hard part though which my video explains.

      no, internet is on a shared line, that line is connected to a tap/node that splits that internet connection with your whole neighborhood, so splitting nodes would increase upstream bandwidth by removing stress off the original

      Basically, instead of having 30 houses on a single internet line all competing for the same bandwidth, you add in another line. This means 15 houses on each line, instead of 30. In theory, this makes internet better for everyone.

    Cox is awful. I have been stuck with them for 20 years, and I have major internet problems 2-3 times every year that takes multiple tech visits before they actually fix the problem each time. Even when you come at them with reliable info on packet loss and confirm that all of your equipment is working properly, they drag their feet. You really have to pester the hell out of them before they finally do their job. They price gouge the hell out of you too. I am paying over $350 a month for a phone line, cable TV with only 1 or 2 premium channels, and 150 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds for my internet. And yet their service is absolute shit. It's insane. The monopolies in this country need to die.

    im a minor and I'm getting 1 to 4 packet loss, its not the wire because I tried multiple, it might be the router but the router used to be good, I didn't get packet loss for months. its a nightmare now and idk what to do because im a minor I make no money and my dad wont let anyone come out because he might be charged so I'm just fucked hopefully it will fix itself but I doubt it because I live in a neighborhood full of old people not gamers

      I had the same attitude when I first noticed internet problems when first moving here. I thought they would eventually fix it on their own without me complaining, but they didn't do anything for 8 years.
