Loose Toilet Seat Solution ~ Rick's Tips

  • Greetings! This week I wanted to tackle a problem that I think many of us have faced. A loose toilet seat. This is irritating and bothersome to say the least and no matter how many times you seem to tighten those plastic screws you just cant' get it to be a permanent fix. Even worse, if you you accidentally strip the plastic screws and have to go in search of them at the hardware store! No matter what happens they will be out of the size you need. Murphy's law applies to all of us!
    So I have thought about doing this as a solution for a while now and today is the day to share. My answer is the non-slip rubber that is used to back rugs, or anything you don't want slipping. It is also marketed as drawer liner, tool box liner, shelf liner, you name it! You can find it at most big box stores for a very unreasonable price so my advice to you is to look for it at places like the dollar store, family dollar, dollar general or in our case Noreen was fortunate enough to source this at TJMAXX for an amazing price for a great big roll.
    We cut this into squares that fit just under the bolt for on both on top and on the bottom side of the seat. Make sure that you put a piece under the seat on the top and on top of the bolt on the bottom so that there is a piece of non-stick between the bolt and the toilet on the bottom, underneath. We also cut a small hole in the center of each piece to accommodate the screw.
    This seemed to tighten things up nicely and with any luck I won''t have to come back next month and do the same thing again.
    I hope this helps give you an idea of how you can fix this if you have this same problem for yourself!

    I had the cheapest of soft close toilet seats that never moved. I replaced it with a more expensive one that wouldn't stop sliding... until your hack. Brilliant, thank you.

    Everybody else suggested I had to go out and buy a 4 dollar part. Not a bad deal altogether, but this let me fix the issue without having to run into town, into the bowls of the store, stand in line, fight traffic all the way home for what should be a five minute fix. I have this stuff every time I move into a new place - Heck even if I didnt have a spare roll I could borrow a corner from a shelf I've already laid down. Excellent advice, Thank you!!

    I use this same grip material for so many things around the house, but never would have thought to use it on the toilet seat. Thanks, now I know how to solve another problem using this material. I cut circles to fit under pottery so I don't scratch my tables, I cut sizes to fit the remote to the TV so it doesn't slide off, circles cut to fit in the clear lids from the chip container for perfect coasters, and now, thanks to you, another good use added to the list. Have a blessed day.

    hey rick! thanks for the great tip! i grew up with this NOT being an issue (not sure what the difference is between the mounting of toilet seats years ago and now). it was only in the past 20 or so years that toilet seats got loose on a regular basis. i tried a number of things and so far, the only thing that seemed to work was to use metal hardware with lock washers. the only problem is that i was concerned that the metal could crack the porcelain, so i returned to the plastic/nylon hardware. i found the thick, rubber washers, but that only spread out the distance in time when i had to re-tighten the hardware. even then, the seat always felt a little "iffy" like it really wasn't solidly secured to the toilet. with this set up, my "re-tightening" went from once every other month to once every 4 or 5 months. keeping the thick, rubber washers and adding in your "tip" (just last night) made the seat feel incredibly solid (much like what i grew up with when this was not an issue). of course, only time will tell, but i've got a good feeling that i am done "fixing" the toilet seat!! THANKS AGAIN!!! -- oh, and i also appreciate the extra tip of where to get the non-slip rubber material for cheap!!

    My toilets (both) have slotted porcelain holes for the bolts. I'm thinking about using silicone on the seat mounts and also to fill in the empty spaces on the sides of the bolts. Tighten slightly by hand then let the glue cure/set completely.

The first seat had smaller, thicker stoppers under the seat and I would slide to the end of the stopper and "fall in." I bought a DIFFERENT BRAND SEAT WITH LONGER, THINNER STOPPERS THAT EXTENDED THE FULL WIDTH OF THE SEAT AND HAD NO PROBLEM!!!!

    • @rickstipdiy
      @rickstipdiy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although I didn't say it in the video you can see where I used a screwdriver to tighten the bolt against the nut. This is the easiest way to it. Tighten the nut below as much as you can with your fingers and then while holding the nut with your fingers finish tightening with a screwdriver from above.
