    Oil pastels definitely have a huge learning curve when it comes to not making your work look like a muddy mess. After a bit of trial and error, you can get some amazing pieces due to how well they blend together and even make some interesting textures by scraping away at them. Hope you give them another try sometime after this traumatic experience 😅

    hi! i have almost no experience using oil pastels, but from what i know, try choosing a smoother paper to work on. you have to really layer and mix them to have a consistent final piece, so the texture in watercolour paper isn’t the best. the colours are really blendable(?) so the outlines can be worked out without a defined lineart, unlike brush pens or nankin. also, im sure you already know this but try watching artists that use oil pastels! all love to you, i love your content :>>

    Try a smoother paper and do exactly what you do in your usual style with the black oil pastel and then add color after just like normally the black lines will blend smooth and solid once you put the color next to them unlike the pencil and push harder for opacity and easier blending. And follow the shapes that you want with your strokes like painting. I think you would be very good at this in your style because you're so strong in depth using color like the little highlights and hair's you could scratch in at the end. You got it boss! 😊🖍

    a tip i learned from my art teacher with oil pastels, go over the details loosely first, dont be focused on filling in the space for the first pass. the base colour, then the darks and lights. once you've done that loose first pass, you can start going over it more precisely! go over with the base colour again, but press down harder and fill in the gaps, then the shading, highlights, and details. also, be sure to erase the sketch enough that you can still see it but wont smudge it :P
    oh also, better not to use your fingers to blend, let the pastels layer themselves into a blend

    Sketching with the color you will use for the outline (or mixing them if you want to) will help. Also, there are two types of pastels: hard and soft. The ones you used look like an in-between version, but soft ones are imo a pleasure to paint with. Not at all crayon-like. The effect you get is different from your style, it really blends a lot. Hope this helps!

    Personally, I have the most fun using oil pastels for abstract ideas. Trying to execute precision based art projects with pastels can’t help but be messy. It’s the same for soft pastels too. The workflow is intuitive for certain types of projects, but you have less control which affects neatness. I definitely prefer other mediums, especially for portraits or landscapes with intricate details.

    personally I recommend sennelier oil pastels, not for the boogie ass reason of using expensive art supplies but because u can rlly begin to feel the true nature of oil pastels. they r creamy and pasty, colors blend seamlessly with each other and you can use oil paint mediums with your oil pastels too, since they are technically a type of oil paint. u can use them on other surfaces such as gessoboard, or wood or even cold watercolor paper (for those who love water-based mediums). it's rlly a great medium, the cheaper brands just don't do the medium any justice.

    I personally really like using oil pastels I always buy some for kids because they don’t cost as much and they usually have a kind a plastic thing around them (idk how to describe it) so they don’t break so easily :)

    The oil pastel itself looked good. It's just that the proportion was off in the oil pastel one whereas the proportion in your watercolor paint one was fine. It's probably because you're more comfortable with watercolors but honestly your video just made me want to try oil pastels for professional drawings now. I rarely ever used oil pastels also, like you. Love the channel. Your work is perfect

    I took an oil painting class and the professor taught me that you can use linseed oil with oil pastels and the oil helps blend, smooth, and thin out the pastels.

    I use oil pastels fairly often, they're pretty easy to use, which is why art teachers usually recommend them to students from ages 5 to 11.
    The key is to mix the pastel by coloring with more force than by using your hands. Watercolor paper probably wasn't the best choice for using them haha since they're mainly used for creating a more or less flat layer on paper.

    I found oil pastels really fun. You can press hard to blend them or press lightly and use paper, q tips or other materials. My mind can't really process how your drawing went so wrong!

    Oil pastels are a different animal from all the other mediums. There are artists who do great portraits with them; ofcourse, the artists are aware that this medium has its own strength and weakness.

    I really sugest you to try soft pastels, soft pastels are more like chalks than crayons and have a technique pretty similar to the watercolors you use, I guess. Only that instead of using water you have to use your own hands, then you can blend the colors super easy making layers. Only thing, you have to use the right paper for soft pastels so the pigment can stick properly, otherwise you'll end up having to use A LOT of paint fixative.
    I'm using this technique for college, being taught by my mom, and I'm in love with it.

    In Philippines, oil pastels are the medium every student use for poster making. Even until now! Like, there's no exception and me, even though I drew, I also have an incompatibility with oil pastels, so I never tried joining on every poster making contest. I just admire my schoolmates' art using that medium.

    As someone who started their art career with oil pastels, I would say you are NOT supposed to blend them with your fingers , rather use some tissues or cotton cloth (that's not dyed).
    If you want to blend the colours I would suggest don't layer too many of them in one place. If you HAVE to layer the colours, don't blend them.
    This is all based on my knowledge of oil pastels and experience with them. Make sure to have fun playing around with them. Love from India.

    tips (i’m not the best at oil pastels): Normally when you use oil pastels it’s easier to sketch with said oil pastel so it doesn’t smudge. also, do press hard! it helps get the colour down

    It’s kinda like watercolors where you work light to dark, as well as blending with other colors, you can use a pallete knife to scrape any unwanted color off too. Maybe a landscape would be an easier start?

    In my experience pastels is used for larger sketch because its hard to focus on small details using it and you have to color it really hard in order for it to stick. Blending it is way smoother than crayon, but if you want it way smoother use "oil" pastels.
    Smudging technique is cool and all, but I think pastels should be pressed hard for you to see the vibrant look, and your hand should be in pain once you're done.

    I felt the same about oil pastels before I found that you can use linseed oil with a Qtip or brush for blending. It works similar to a thick watercolor pencil & you can use odorless turpentine with a Qtip to make corrections. I love working with all kinds of media especially oil painting & watercolor & ink. Before I came across your videos I never thought to use color pencils on watercolor along with ink. You inspire me daily! I love your art, my faves are your Umbrella 🌂 Academy & Long hair art books. 🎨

      what do you think about craypass and pentel oil pastels? thanks!

    • @cIvy726
      @cIvy726 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@kimcarig714 I think oil pastels are very individual taste. Each person has to decide if they want a buttery pastel, or a more dry pastel, etc.. I really like all the Mungyo pastels in part because they are not terribly expensive so I'm not afraid to use them boldly--I'm not saving them for a brilliant moment that may never come-- yet they behave like a quality pastel.

    • @kimcarig714

      @@cIvy726 I see. I haven't try the mungyo oil pastel but I have the mungyo soft pastel and it's great also.
      Do you also like smooth texture like vellum board for your oil pastels?

    • @cIvy726
      @cIvy726 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@kimcarig714 I think I should say, after saying Lindsay liked Pentel well enough, that BlackBeans, a very good pastel artist, does not, and both mentioned smell. So, there's that. Everyone seems to like Mungyo. I have had the Mungyo Gallery (artist grade) oil pastels, and the regular soft pastels for many years. I'm always happy with them. I have just ordered Mungyo oil pastels (blue box, student grade) but the reviews on TH-cam show a pastel that simply doesn't blend well. Mungyo Gallery blends beautifully, so I would recommend that over the blue box, but the student grade is very inexpensive, more waxy and limited in terms of blending and layering. The student grade has a lot of texture, so if you like that they are great. Also, apparently, they work well on black paper. Mungyo gallery is soft, blendable, layerable, gorgeous... but more expensive.

    • @cIvy726
      @cIvy726 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@kimcarig714 I had to come back to say that I do NOT recommend the Mungyo Student grade pastels (blue box) BUT I do recommend Mungyo Gallery oil pastels. Pastels that do not blend will make you believe you do not like working with pastels, and the student pastels don't blend well. Pastels that are soft, blend, layer nicely etc., like Mungyo GALLERY, will give you a much better sense of whether or not this is a medium for you. You might also consider looking at reviews for the new Mont Marte pastels. They are new, I think, and an Australian company. They are quite inexpensive - comparable to the Mungyo student pastels in price - but are getting really good reviews in terms of softness and blendability. I think they are probably worth a gamble. Look at the reviews and see what you think. Ok, I'm done now! ;0)
