It may roll a bit more around the corners, but the ride is noticeably more forgiving and it feels like you glide over bumps : )

      Hi Noah, I’m currently looking at a 2011 (61) 118d for £5k. It’s at 108k miles but has had a new timing chain installed. Have you heard anything about these at higher mileage?

      @@jami8895 My 61 plate 116d is at 120k now, and I’ve had no issues with the chain yet. I think generally if it hasn’t been done yet then I wouldn’t worry until you start hearing noises. Once you start hearing chain related noises, that’s probably when it’s on its way out. Would be interesting to hear if Noah has had his done yet.

    I got one of these some months ago and totally loving it. Definitely was worth it buying a well equipped one. It has the 8-speed automatic gearbox, harman kardon sound system, xenon lights with LED daytime driving lights, sport seats with lumbar support, front and rear parking sensors and it even has the park assist option that makes it parallel park by itself! The trim level is sport line so not an M-sport unfortunately. But all the equipment really make it worth every penny so I would definitely recommend buying a well specced one. Mine has also done 125k miles and the engine is running smooth as butter. No rattles or anything. This engine (N47T) has the "upgraded" timing chain compared to the older model N47. On this engine the timing chain seems to have problems only if it has not been looked after. Check the maintenance history properly before buying :)

      If I’m brutally honest, I don’t think it’s worth it and it won’t sound great. There’s a F20/F21 owners group on Facebook and a few people have done it on there, so maybe join that and watch some of those videos. But the 2.0 diesels don’t sound very nice to begin with, making it louder will make it worse, but that’s just my opinion : )

    • @NathanMannin
      @NathanMannin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Jonathan! Thanks! My biggest concern when buying this particular generation 1 series with the N47 engine, is how much mileage it’s done and if the timing chain has been changed. The N47 engine is commonly known for the timing chain to snap, and is recommended to be changed after 100Kish miles. Obviously it’s pot luck whether you’ll buy a lemon, or a strong one. My 116d had the original chain at 126K miles and there was no rattle, so I took the risk and never changed it. So when you go to view one, listen out for a chain rattle on start up, and if it has high mileage (100K plus for example) be sure to ask if the chain has been replaced, it’s an expensive fix if it snaps. Other than that, my ownership was literally trouble free and was an excellent work wagon, just the regular service items I had to do.

  • @renatomorais8136
    @renatomorais8136 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 13:20 you said that's a 2.0l diesel engine? Isn't the 116d a 1.6 BMW/PSA diesel engine? Asking because now I'm a bit confused. I've been driving the other half's 116d and it's so much more my alley than my current car that I'm actually considering a straight trade for one of those.

    • @NathanMannin
      @NathanMannin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From 2011 to 2015 the 116d had the N47 2.0l 4 cylinder engine, the same engine found in a 118d and 120d, the 116d is just a detuned version of the 120d, you can do a simple tune to get the same power as the 120d. I think 2015 onwards they replaced the 2.0l 4 cylinder N47 engine to the 1.5l 3 cylinder B37 engine. I hope that helps!
