In 1963 visiting this site an old man walked around in uniform and claimed it was his dads and he was 2 when the civil war ended. He claimed his dad fought in the civil war and his dad's great GrandFather in the American revolution. He claimed his Great Grandfather held His Dad as a Baby and his dad held him. He shook all of our hands and told us it was a direct connection to the civil war and the American revolution and to never forget it as it was 1 touch and 2 touches from our total history.

Beautifully filmed, as always. I love the image you begin with, those birds on the wing.
The old wood floors really make you feel “grounded”. They, for me, forge an instant connection to those who lived there in those times.

When I was a kid my dad would take us to historical sites. He said we needed to learn something during the summer. Now as an adult I truly appreciate it. My dad grew up in PA so we went there a few times. Thanks for your videos it brings back memories.

Can’t even imagine how cool it must be to live in a place like that. Obviously a great sense of stewardship from the owners. Love the artifacts being displayed from the property. You are a one man tourism department for Gettysburg, which is great. Not sure about anyone else, but just based on your series of videos, I’ll definitely be making a return trip.

There are many excellent B&B's around Gettysburg. And if your inclined to drive a little, further south to Harper's Ferry.
Even a few historic period farms you can rent the entire out property. It sounds expensive, but for a child friendly option, it's actually a steal.

    Hey JD
I found your videos during your Mt Vernon trip but when I saw you were doing a Gettysburg series I was super excited. I’m not a local but a near local. I can remember my aunt taking me for summer picnics at devils den. I’ve done the same for my younger brother and sisters and my niece and nephew, more geared toward the history than the scenery.
When I saw the title for your vid I thought you got the chance to stay at the Leicester House for the night but this is soo much better. Long story short, my husband scheduled for us to have our baby shower here last year. Unfortunately, COVID shut everything down right before. The ladies that run this BnB were so wonderful and gracious under the circumstances and I’m so glad to see the home they’ve worked so hard to preserve still running. I can’t wait to reschedule my visit there, hopefully next summer.
Thank you so much for making this series. There have been so many tidbits that I didn’t even know including the Spangler farm. I’ve never been in the barn and your vid was truly amazing.
One of the lesser known facts of Gettysburg is that Lydia Leicester turned her bad luck into good fortune after the war by letting the dead horses on her property decompose to bone so she could sell those bones for glue. She was so prosperous she was able to build an addition onto her house. In the 1880’s before her death, she sold her parcel to the people collecting land for preservation and moved the addition she had built into town, where she lived til she died a few years later.
Thank you so much for all you amazing videos!

I think the battle was the best thing to happen to Gettysburg. If it had never happened, it would be just another small town in the USA and a lot of buildings from that time frame torn down. They have chosen to try and preserve as much as is possible instead of trying to forget the past like other places.
There is a battlefield near me. Thing is only a splinter of the field actually remains, the rest being built on. The "preserved part" was gone over by archaeologists who found no physical evidence anything even happened on that part. This was all done with period maps and description of the battle and military reports.
I am SO looking forward to returning to Gettysburg. Going to cost a mint but will be worth every cent.
Thanks JD for a spectacular series so far and with more to come I'm sure..

Your Gettysburg series keeps getting better. With all of these historic BNB's you have stayed in, have you ever experienced anything supernatural?...or otherwise couldn't explain? I keep seeing and hearing about videos of ghosts on various Gettysburg battlefields. ..and really not just Gettysburg but other historic places as well. Ford's Theater in D.C. gave me the creeps when I visited there.

My wife and I spent the night in the bedroom General Longstreet used during the Battle of Antietam. It was in 1991 at the Piper Farm house (when it was a B \and B at the time) in the middle of the battlefield near the sunken lane. We were the only guests that night and as I recall there were 3 bedrooms available. The owners did not live there but sent a maid service in the morning to set up breakfast and coffee. They did not tarry but left quickly. We were supposed to stay 2 nights, but the house was so creepy and had a heavy, forlorn feel about it, we elected to leave after one night. It was hard to describe...but one thing that happened is we awoke to the buzzing sound of THOUSANDS of flies gathering on the bathroom screen window in the morning.

I am so loving the videos on Gettysburg, although the story on it has been so well written, and retold you prove there is always something knew to learn. JD, the two outer doors served other purposes, one as you mentioned was the formal entrance, the second was often the entrance where the farmers would enter wearing their work clothes and the associated smells of those clothes. Some farms later added a shanty where the Carmen would change his clothes at days end prior to entering the house, but for lunch they still used the second entrance. I had never heard of finding items like that at the bottom of the well, I did however experience finding items like that when we eliminated the outhouse.
