Corona vs. Modelo vs. Dos Equis - Pro Brewer PICKS!

  • In this video, Nate, the CEO & Head Brewer of Tree House Brewery samples Mexican Lager, discusses their flavors, and picks a favorite!
Mexican Lager is enjoying strong growth in the United States and across the world and for good reason - these low-alcohol, modestly flavored, crisp lagers are easy to gravitate toward in any situation where you seek refreshment.
Modelo recently overtook Bud Light as the best selling light lager in America after a decades-long reign.
In this video, Michael concocted a blind tasting of popular Mexican Lagers with a few goals in mind:
    1) To gain a better understanding of the style
    2) To conceptualize our own effort within this amazing and crushable style.
    3) To see if Nate could guess which ones are which.
Crushable and classic lager, such as those featured in this video, are an ideal accompaniment to everyday moments in life.
A blind assessment carries tremendous value, as it removes biases and preconceived notions based on societal perceptions and years of marketing. It also helps us understand what we truly enjoy by considering the beers and attempting to reverse engineer them.
Featured here are Modelo, Dos Equis, Pacifico, Tecate, and Corona. It is very important to note that an objective, apples-to-apples taste of these beers would best be suited to knowing the storage history of the beers. Like any perishable, evolving product, they carry different characteristics at different points in their lifecycle. Each brand has qualities that make it well-suited to enjoy in warmer climates, and Tree House respects the work of those who craft these beers. It is different to assess a beer than it is to simply enjoy it, and we have enjoyed all of these beers at different times in our lives.
A Mexican-style lager is a crisp, light-to-medium-bodied beer that often showcases a mild malt character with a touch of sweetness and a low to moderate hop bitterness. Influenced by German brewing traditions, this lager is typically brewed with a combination of pale malted barley, adjunct grains like maize to lighten the body and flavor, and noble hops. Its clean, refreshing finish makes it particularly popular in warm climates and a favored choice for pairing with spicy cuisines.

Glad Nate mentioned the fact that there are inherent storage issues with these imported lagers. I did plenty of “field research” when I lived in Tucson, where MX lagers are cheap, fresh & abundant. For my tastes, Pacifico is my favorite when fresh (driest, most hop flavor), followed by Carta Blanca, Tecate, Dos XX, Mexicali, Modelo and Corona. Honorable mentions: Bohemia, Victoria…doesn’t qualify because Boh is more like a German pils and Victoria kind of a Vienna thing.

And after a few brewing sessions (around 10-15). We decided on these hops. We tried different recipes, all the way from urquell type to Pacifico clones ect. The hops we use are warrior, crystal, saaz. Nottingham yeast seems to like my recipe and skillset.

While a lot of people do not like Corona for its skunkiness, I believe personally that it is good if you PURPOSELY skunk it in the sun. It’s a sun beer after all. I found this belief when a couple summers ago my buddies and I hung out at my parents lake house. 8 bros piled into a Chevy Suburban with 96 total coronas in coolers and a zip in the glove box, flying down the interstate. We arrive, all sweaty and ready to go for a dip. All 8 of us simultaneously popping tops, we set our beers down on the patio table in direct sunlight and roll one up. After about 3-4 minutes of toking and passing, we all grab our lukewarm beers now and head to the dock, sipping on Chihuahua honey. A fresh, cold corona MAY not taste good, but leave it in the sun for a short bit and you have a smooth treat that’s actually palatable.

I didnt start drinking beer until June of 2024 (my birthday month) and I've been trying different beers, trying to find which one I like the most. Since I'm a bit overweight I prefer to stick to light beers but I will have a regular one on special occasions. So far the beers I've tried are...
-Guinness (whichever one is normally on tap at an Irish pub in NYC). I didnt like it at first but now I'm okay having it along with shepard's pie or bangers and mash.
-Corona Primier. Tried it at a ball game and didnt like it. I like my beer to have that refreshing crisp which this didn't have. It also didn't have enough flavor.
-Coors Light. My go to so far. My local supermarket sells the small can 2 for $4 and it has that refreshing crisp I look for. Flavor is not bad.
-Michelob Ultra. Had this at a diner once. Liked it enough to order a second bottle.
-Michelob Ultra Pure Gold. Got a six pack at the supermarket since it was the only way i could get it. Really, really enjoy this one and it has less than 100 calories which is great.
-Blue Moon. I like it but only once in a while.
-Blue Moon Light. I like this one more than regular Blue Moon.
-Brix City Gloria. When I visited New Jersey and went to a restaurant there I wanted to try one of their local beers and the server recommended this one. It's a Belgian blonde ale and it was crisp and delicious. Definitely my favorite beer I've had.
There are still a bunch of beers I want to try in an effort to find which one I'll enjoy the most but so far Coors Light and Michelob Ultra Pure Gold are the ones that have been consistently good for me. Samuel Adams is the next one I'm probably going to try although I really want to wait until I visit Boston and try it at a bar there.

I'd be interested to see how the review would change if you added a squeeze of lime. I get why you would want to judge them on their own merits but there is just something about adding a lime to MLs that unlocks so much to them. A local craft brewery in my area has an amazing dark ML that they make and while it is fantastic on it's own, adding that squeeze of lime just seems to unlock a whole other level to the beer.

What would be the difference betwen them and Ameerican lager? I think of true Mexican lager to be the darker beers. Kind of like a Vienna.

  • @RubberTree-73

I have certainly had all of these beers but usually have thought of them as cheap go-to party/get together beers. In my experience, the Mexican lagers at craft breweries usually blow these out of the water, I think for two reasons. One that you mentioned was a bit more hop character, especially highlighting a floral note from noble hops like you pointed out in the Dos Equis. But secondly, it also seems they always include a more notable amount of maize in the grist. It gives a really nice sweetness and almost a creaminess to the mouthfeel (or at least perceived creaminess) while still drinking so light and crisp. Just wanted to toss my 2 cents in about my experience with Mexican lagers in craft breweries. As far as my experience goes, this include many breweries in the states and some in Ensenada down in Baja.

I would agree, however when you have Pacifico close to where it's brewed it's way better. I don't think these beers travel well in general.

Know you love using unique ingredients and creating great content/story as well. A local brewery used Oaxacan green corn in their Mexican lager that turned out amazing. Tying that in with a trip to Oaxaca could be really interesting. Lots of beauty, culture and amazing food in that region of Mexico.

I have always been a XX fan, but I also love Modelo, Pacifico, and Tecate. Modelo Especial does occasionally have the Corona issue, those clear bottles just don't protect the brews well enough, but it's an occasional issue for Modelo vs a CONSTANT issue with Corona (which I only drink when it's free and my only option)!

You say: "Based on the way that it clings on the side of the glass I can tell you that it's probably a touch drier than the one that I just tried". Could you elaborate on that?

Dos equis is usually the cheapest and most widely available at mexican restaurants, love it. Ambar is fine too. Pacifico is clean and cool cans, corona is too sweet but love the skunky smell, and tecate is simply the best and cheapest. Last time i was in Mexico we would buy a box or two every day and just spend all day drinking it in the pool. Hard to tell if it was beer or pool water we were drinking but it was the cheapest by a few dollars. I made a good mexican lager with kveik yeast, 1 oz liberty and 1 oz motueka hops. Very clean and no lime needed. But in general I'd prefer to drink micheladas
