La Defense (new business district of Paris) is far enough from the Eiffel Tower. The perspective of the shot just made it look closer. You dont see it, if you are in the "old" Paris. ... ... I forgot: even La Defense is an attraction today because its not built like in the US. 😉

I think that we have an unexplicably close relationship with our old architecture. Even inside the country, every region loves their local castle and people are proud of it. I live near a fairytale-like castle that I can see from my window, it's the treasure of our valley and the local people keep visiting it very often. After 30+ years, I can't get enough of it, just walking around it every now and then or seeing it in the distance. It never stops amazing us. Some people are there every weekend. In 1950 the castle caught fire and people in the region ran away from work to look at it, crying and desperate, it was considered a huge tragedy. It took only one year to repair it thanks to the pressure of the people. The castle was already standing in the year 1111, so it is almost thousand years old and loved across the time and generations. It's crazy to think that your ancestors in year 1111 could see it too. People come and go, but the castle stays there. And the same goes for every region of Slovakia and their local architecture.

Im from the Netherlands and one ot the problems we have here with skyscraper is that they are just to expensive. The ground in and around rhe bigger cities are not strong enough to hold a skyscraper so you have to build not only up but also really deep down

You guys should check out the Architecture we have here in Manchester England. We’re not afraid of mixing old and new. Everything from black and white mediaeval buildings and Roman ruins to Incredible new buildings like The Imperial War Museum North which breaks all the architectural rules known or John Rylands Library which is like being in Hogwarts

The sky scrapers in London some how blend really well with the old architecture that runs between...clever designs and planning is everything...here On the Isle of Wight, buildings are not allowed to be built over a certain height as the island is predominantly allocated as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and so nothing must dominate the landscape...this applies to many other areas of the UK too....😊✌🇬🇧

Wasn't the skyscraper in London which was build like a lense? I think it reflected the sun so much, you could literrally cook on top of the parked cars there. I think they had to "dim" the windows because the whole street was cooking

The two skyscrapers named "vertical woods" are in Milan. A good example of how to build high rise with a different take. However, I wouldn't build skyscrapers in Rome or Florence city centers.

The reason for the "simplicity" of modern architecture lies in the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s, in which the main emphasis was on practicality. And that fit architecturally very, very well with American capitalism. By the way, as well as to Soviet post-Stalinism. Today, fortunately, people are once again beginning to build according to human needs.

  • @Geheimkuenstler

I think the video cut short a bit on the reason. The cities in the EU have to keep a line of sight from specific points where you could see the historic landmarks. Take Paris e.g. In the video you could see the skyscrapers on the other side of the Seinne. They are build there, because there weren't any defined "viewing points for the historic landmarks like the Eiffeltower. This limited the height of new buildings for the sightline in the older parts. The whole financial skyscraper district is called "La defense" (the defense).
There is only one skyscraper in the old part of Paris, which, according to everyone who has seen this thing gives you the best view of Paris, because you can't see the skyscraper.
It was build in the 70s (I think) and is ugly as f.... (look it up on Google Maps and you know what I mean).
Other reason cities don't build skyscrapers. Berlin is literrally build atop of a swamp. Heavier buildings would just sink in time.

    • @patricialewis1464
      @patricialewis1464 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. I was going to mention that. The skyscraper area of London ((Canary Wharf) is magnificent but doesn’t interfere with the historic centre or block any views.

If you built a skyscraper in the shape of a rifle - think nearly everyone in the world would think it was in the USA - that's your culture 🤣
Because - building it in the shape of a Big Mac would take up a real huge amount of land to be also labelled as a skyscraper 🤪

Having pearls like "La Grand Place" here in Brussels depicting 5 or so old styles of building is just such a jewel to still have around.(Gothic, Neo-Liberal, etc.)
I'm not a fan of preserving EVERYTHING but at the same time to get rid of all of it is equally offensive to me.
The only good potential about skycrapers to me is saving space and maybe through that lowering housing and renting prices. This is a positive.
But at the same time the wealthy owns a lot of buildings and will never allow them to be used do lower housing prices anyway.

There have been many experiments to emulate old styles on new buildings. The results are mostly underwhelming, and some really nasty looking constructions came from it. Trying to be something you aren't (e.g. trying to be a building from the 17th century, when in fact, you are a building from the 21th century), creates impractical, high maintenance buildings, basically a disneyfication of construction. It's something, that could be fun for a day, but nothing to endure for the rest of your life.

Skyscrapers are not a bad thing as such, but most of us around the world don't want to live near them.
I think Europe has the right attitude when it comes to skyscrapers, they build them in designated areas that are usually away from where people live and tend to be business centric, they also tend to be more unique with their designs compared to what we see in North America and Asia which tend to be bland and souless as the video puts it.
In truth, there's not really many of us around the world that wants to live near them, they look ugly, especially in North America and Asia, they also block out a lot of the sun and scenery, which kinda makes those areas feel a lot more compact.
We should also remember that skyscrapers in the early days were seen as a power symbol, something that the US wanted to prove to the world that it's a rising power and something Asia is doing now, it's something Europe never had to prove because it's had a long history of being a major power, it probably also explained why Europe is by far the number one spot when it comes to holiday tourist around the world, it's a safe region that has a mixture of old and new whereas a lot of the world are going mostly new, if you were someone going on holiday, you can easierlly see the appeal of Europe over the rest of the world.

The USA is not an Island it's a continent, Why build sky scrapers for when you have so much land to build on? if you we're an island i would get it that you need to build sky scrapers. Like Japan for example. But America has a lot of land to build on and acomodate living space for a bigger population. Sky scrappers is to show off. Besides Sky scrappers are most likely to fall durring an earthquake or tornado. It dosen't make sense. But yeah :D

Its not that europeans is more concerned about our history.. its rather, there is more history to preserv!
There is other topics to understand and that is property prices, one cant build a small building in New York city and make it profitable!
And to Sweden.. oh so you want to build a skyskraper in our city.. nice, but you altso need to build roads, schools, shoping center, a subway, a library, kindergarten.. everything that those living there needs!
Or you build your tower where the comunity anyway wanted to build and expand.. now the price for your lot have gone up a lot.. its in a development area!
