They were pitched as "the next Beatles", but I never saw it. 03:50 - A band that was also badly taken advantage of was Badfinger - now that was a real sad story.
@@gerrym.9354 The Rollers' hit songs did not have the complexity of the Beatles early hits IMHO. The excitement was there though. Their album "Elevator" would probably be their "Rubber Soul" except that it is a bit hit and miss. Having said that, I can still listen to their good tracks like Eagles Fly to this day, and at very high volume lol.
I don't know how much you see this as tutorial when you show how to play the songs. But it will be nice if you could write the cords in the description, maybe some diagrams of the extended cord shapes you are using.
Actually, I vaguely remember this band. The next "Beatles" HA! I hardly remember them and it's not a deep memory! They were more like 'bubble gum rock". This bands name is poor and music had nothing for me at that time.. If you had not illuminated aspects about who they are and how they performed I would not have heard it. But with that name, that sound, well I would have never looked. So now that I have I realize I did not miss anything. Go back to the roller ball arena- great team name!
The rollers provided so many happy memories for me as a teenager so its sad that they had so many personal issues later on. RIP to alan, les and ian. Thanks for your critique of them. They provided so many happy memories for so many people and deserved peace later in their lives.
Boy I hope this year isn't a continuation of 2020. We lost so many musical and acting contemporaries. Now this was a shock. The Bay City Rollers were a one of those happy high school memories. Rest easy,Les.⚘
I knew you would do this, I love the respect you give to great artists. This means so much to me as I loved the band so much and Les was my favourite. I was so upset when I heard the news yesterday. May he rest in peace.🌹
Beautiful, intelligent tribute to a band that gave so much and got very little. I was a huge BCR fan as a girl. Les was my fave and it is shocking he has died at 65 - when I was a fan he seemed so much older to me - it is just a 5 year gap. We were all very young. Great song, thank you for taking the time again to highlight the positive and remind many of the negative - they were exploited and I am sure that issue contributed to a shorter life for Leslie Richard McKeown.
Hearing about Les McKeown passing just broke my heart. I had a few their albums. I remember watching their TV show. Ty for sharing and giving us some info on these guys. R.I.P Les McKeown you'll always be an Angel to me. Fly high with the Angels.
Thanks Fil for another great analysis. I remember The Bay City Rollers back in the 70's when graduating from high school. The girls were crazy about them reminding me the way girls reacted to The Beatles. We are losing many musicians from my generation. Thanks for keeping the old groups alive.
I wasn’t even a teen when I first fell in love with their music. I always have them on my playlist. Thank you Fil for this great analysis. RIP Les and thank you for everything.
Your analysis video of the Bay City Rollers’ performance provided a heartfelt tribute to their late lead singer Les McKeown. I appreciate your thorough analysis of the band’s performance in every way. I also have to thank you for helping keep the memories of the great musicians in your analysis videos.
I was a teen totally in love with the Bay City Rollers, hearing of Les' passing broke my heart. But i think what hurt more was to hear how these guys were taken advantage of, in so many ways RIP Les, Alan & Ian...BCR love❤❤❤
Thank you for the time & energy it took to condense so much into fifteen minutes. Now that the pandemic may be waning in the US, I'm unsubscribing from many channels. I'm keeping those podcasters who value themselves, their material and their audience. You really set the standard.
I clicked this video so fast. I've always mentioned Crewe/Gaudio in the same breath as Lennon/McCartney and Brian Wilson. I've been in the music industry all my life but all my sensibilities were shaped by The Beatles (of course), Beach Boys, and Four Seasons. I still have the 45 rpm record of Bye Bye Baby. I sure wish more people appreciated their songcraft. Thank you for the great analysis.
thank you Fil, it's a sad day for BCR fans, I was at Les' (and band) last concert here in Toronto before they had to go back home due to Covid . We were waiting on him to rearrange the rest of the tour when possible. A lot of people the world over love him (he had his haters too lol) and he will be sorely missed. Godspeed Leslie Richard McKeown
That's it!!! Eric is classically trained in stringed instruments. I have a live concert where he played a classical song and he's very good. I stopped everything I was doing and stood there being wholly impressed and this was taped during the BCR years. I think I mentioned that I met Les twice and Alan once and Woody once. ALL DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES. Les was quite the entertainer and was meant to be on stage as a front man. Extremely charismatic and so much fun. Alan was so shy and Woody was very shy, but liked to joke. Les was so out going and very approachable and loved people. He loved a challenge and loved to talk about music and what was going on with technology. He had a lovely voice too. If you listen to Nobby Clark, the singer previous to Les, he was good, but he just didn't fit. Les fit like a piece of the puzzle. It was magic. Thank you for going over the chords with us that Eric played and the song and Les singing and the Longmuirs and tribute to Les (and Alan silently). Very nice.

I have to admit that when I clicked on your other videos about the BCR, I was not expecting such an upbeat and favourable view. Thank you so much for your unbiased review!
I was lucky enough to share a stage with a very young BCR in Edinburgh, not once but twice. On both occasions the other band was the East West Blues Band, with the stunning Ian Bairnson on guitar. It was in a club called Oasis on The Bridges in Edinburgh. Ian went on to be house guitar for the Alan Parsons Project and joined up with Davy Paton to form the excellent Pilot. He also played the Wuthering Heights solo and sessioned for everybody!! The BCR weren’t great players then, but their vocal harmonies were exceptional. Lord Fil of Henley, well done: I can guarantee from personal experience that they could genuinely play - and sing!😊
I was well into graduate school when this bunch came out. We put them in the same category as the DiFranco family. Today, 'sunshine pop' from back then, or 'bubblegum pop' if you will, has finally come into respect.
Back in 79 when Les "left" the band they reinvented themselves with a new lead singer from south Africa named Duncan Faure. Calling themselves The Rollers and releasing 3 albums, Elevator, Voxx, Ricochet. The music was more rock sounding. Could you possibly analyse some songs from these albums. Love your videos.

Loved their music, still play it when I want to put on some happy music. They were better than people give them credit for. I was lucky that I got to see them three times; once when they came to Chicago, then twice at our state fair. I was pleasantly surprised by how tight the shows were. Forty plus years have passed and I vividly remember their set for the "It's a Game" tour. Backlit was a black & white chess board that extended onto the stage, with life size chess pieces. It was visually striking. Simplistic compared to today's concerts, but memorable. I wish people would give their music a chance, they have a solid catalog filled with fun songs.
I've only just come across this. We saw Les McKeown in concert a few years ago. It was a great show. Les was very engaging and a great singer. He was so full of life, it's sad to hear of his passing.
I really loved them. I was one of those screaming girls in the crowd many times. It's funny I never thought about how good the composition on many of their songs were. You did a very nice tribute to Les.
Nice video - I was 14 when BCR had this hit - I wasn't a "teeny bopper" in my musical tastes but I do remember this group's huge impact - Phil Coulter wrote or co-wrote another of their hits "Shang -a-Lang" which I think made more of an impact on me - rest in peace Les - your place, and that of your fellow band members in music history, is secure - money - or the lack of monetary reward (as sadly happened here) - cannot erase the very happy memories millions have of BCR.
Great reaction. rip Les you will be sadly missed and in the hearts many people for years to come. This song was first done buy franki Valley and the four seasons
Been a fan for about 3years. Love what you're doing. But I wanted to say I absolutely love that you've been pulling out the 6 string so much more. Rock on Fil.
There whole smiling upbeat persona wonderful. I seriously never know Les had demons bless him. I was so sad to hear he was gone. He snd the others were a huge part of my teenage years I absolutely was crazy for them. Thanks 🙏 for doing this love your stuff wings of Pegasus
Love the bay city rollers my favorites are Eric faulkner he take my breath and heart away with his blue eyes ,Les McKeown and Ian Mitchell ❤❤still listen to them today
Even after all these years Les's voice in the chorus still breaks my heart, taking me right back to my first ever crush, a girl called Kim. I must've been 6 or 7 lol
Just had a look at the Mike Mansfield production of BCR at Eden Studios 1976. A rather improbable cover of the Beach Boys Dont Worry Baby complete with two pairs of steel drums, pulled off with great harmonies and enough variation to be original without compromising the song in anyway, not many other groups could do the Beach Boys well (maybe the 4 seasons which would be interesting ) plus some other less hits with the guys on different instruments, with a mix of rock , bubblegum and the rock ballard all in half hour program
Please do an analysis of Saturday Night! The lead guitar introduction is amazing! There is also a video with Les playing the drums and he did a superb job!

Because they could hardly okay instruments . Only Les could sing.
The Rollers are criminally underrated, I was lucky enough to find one of their albums (first issue I believe) in good condition. Love the Rollers.

Hi Mark! A fun video and a sad occasion.
It is called tartan.

Great memories but really enjoying Eric’s new song writing and folk Celtic music.
Along with Primal Scream and Gerry Rafferty....the most important Scottish musical exports. The Rollers deserve more credit than they get.
I would add Gallagher & Lyle to that list. Wonderful songs and performers.

Thx for taking the time to do this. You're such a great musician yourself. Sty safe.
Thanks!
The Bay City Rollers were magical. I like your analysis of Bye Bye Baby. Thank you, Fil.
Thx for doing this! Much appreciated!
I had a crush on a girl and she loved the Bay City Rollers. I became a fan of them too. We were in 6th grade.
Loved this video. Great harmonies and those 70s outfits were totally groovy!
Wow, I didn’t realize that Les McKeown had died. Thanks for the video.
Keep up at the back there
You are so great at explaining, you must be teaching as well. I love the sound of the guitar, it is my favourite instrument. 🍁🇨🇦
Thanks!
I was a Roller girl, my mum sewed many plaid outfits for me…my favourite, like in love at 14 favourite, was Les. RIP. 😭
Great band! Sweet music and performance is always welcome.
Rest In Peace Les we won't let the wonderful music die
Even after all these years Les's voice in the chorus still breaks my heart, taking me right back to my first ever crush, a girl called Kim. I must've been 6 or 7 lol
And they say there was never any good music in the 70's. Rollers, Aerosmith, Kiss, Bee Gees. So so many.
Very nice analysis Fil. I liked the Bay City Rollers and its a shame to hear how they were cheated by their own record label. RIP Les.
Rest in Peace Les McKewan. Thanks for the memories. You were great.
Oh man, hadn’t heard about Les’s passing. Thank you for yet another great video. Took me back to my pre-teen years.
Les was my baby back in the day!! Rip Les❤
Thank you so much for this video. I remember them through Junior High and High school. Just bought TheIr Best of CD from Tower Records.
Thank you
Please do an analysis of Saturday Night! The lead guitar introduction is amazing! There is also a video with Les playing the drums and he did a superb job!
RIP Les thanks for the memories
