That's exactly what I loved in the [Spooky Deer]s... they just want you to get out of their property.
And only harm you if they cannot make you go away.

If you're caught by the owlkin, they will examine you, then extinguish your lantern, effectively booting you out of their region.
If you do not have a lantern, they will snap your neck. With one hand. What a chad.
Note that this is if they caught you - but until then, they are watching you...try to get a better view... trying to flank you, since, you are flashing a lantern into their eyes, they can't make it out if you are friend or foe.
A player in another comment wrote that one owl actually stopped at a certain distance - while another flanked them.
This is compared to the Anglerfish, who are EXTREMELY territorial animals who will KILL ON SIGHT.

My favorite bit of this DLC was immediately after finding The Stranger and seeing that I couldn't translate the language (before finding the slide reels,) I went back to Hal at the Observatory and told them I found a new alien language, asked them if they could translate it, and they just said something along the lines of "Incredible! This DLC cemented Outer Wilds as my favorite game of all time, beating out Breath of the Wild. It's very different from the main game in both story and gameplay, but the way it connects back to the main narrative is so emotionally powerful that the game doesn't feel complete without it now. It's like a piece of the puzzle you never knew you were missing. Hang a copy of this game in the Louvre. Outer Wilds is the game of the year for all time.

    • @arparso
      @arparso 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Same for me. I do have some criticism with it (*cough* stealth mechanics / total darkness *cough*), but overall this DLC turned out so much better than it had any right to be. Most importantly, it perfectly captured that magical exploration atmosphere of your first base game playthrough while also fitting in really well into the grand narrative without feeling tacked on at all.

Apparently the devs had an issue where the Stranger's inhabitants were considered too friendly-looking in the paintings. So they had to spook 'em up a bit.

@@samhescott348 the entire game is a pretty much perfect metaphor for grieving and letting go. It's a big metaphor for giving up the fear of death, for embracing how short life is, for living life to the fullest.
The Strangers/Owlks/Pursuers refused to just let go. They sacrificed everything to get to the Eye. Then when they found it, they were so scared of the final step that they tried to live in denial, tried to hide the truth from everyone else. Their sacrifice, their attempt to save the universe, almost doomed the universe.

    • @geggiiis

Yeah, they effectively forced black crush, which is the way it should be for real darkness. The DLC is amazing. I, myself being a member of being a little bitch, hated trying the Homeworld. But I knew I had to tough it out.
The music like the previous game often uses the main theme in a remixed way. The echo remix sounds like sad reminiscing version of the main song. It makes you wonder and curious, to what it means. The mystery is amazing.
The story, without spoilers, has no retcons. It fits perfect in the universe, as if it was always there, we were just not told it. And it's important to the base game. The retelling without text and only visual, is amazing and very thematic to the aliens.
Gameplay is changed a lot, and mechanics of the main game aren't used in some cases. It's a bit linear, but that's to be understood. Plus, some important discovery parts are easy to stumble into because of the nature of the game. Like the base game, you can beat it in 20 minutes, you just don't know how to yet.

I seriously cannot wait to see what comes next from Mobius. They've really made a masterpiece with Outer Wilds. I'm torn because I want more Outer Wilds, but I don't know if that would ruin it. I want more space adventure games from them, but maybe not necessarily set in the same place? They are absolute masters of crafting an adventure where you learn to progress.

Its so timeless, i could be playing it 10 years from now and still enjoy it just as much. I do worry that a particular part of the charm might wear off if they made a series out of it, part of the beauty of Outer Wilds is that its just a simple self contained game, without all the fluff and battle passes that other games push

I played the base game a few months after it came out. I think about it about probably three times a week, three years later. I absolutely adore this game. I’m so sincerely convinced I won’t play a better game for another decade. I hold it so near and dear to my heart. I first played it at a very low time in my life. I’m not saying Outer Wilds made everything better, I’m saying it was there for me when no one wasn’t. It’s a shame this game won’t see the popularity and love it deserves until it’s considered a classic. Echoes of the Eye put that spark back in my heart that only Outer Wilds has been able to achieve. I wish I could shake everyone involved in its development and tell them thank you for both the base game and the DLC and let them know exactly how much both mean to me. You hit it on the head. This DLC is a masterpiece. Outer Wilds is a masterpiece. And that word should not be taking lightly. Both are truly works of art.

Like the elevator shortcut in the hangar, or the artifact glitch. Multiple times I considered leaving my artifact behind so I could sneak around without holding down the conceal button, but every time I thought "but what if I *need* the artifact". One of my favorite parts was having the 3 secret areas pointed out to me, which in turn revealed 3 secrets that were always there, but i simply had not looked. I love that technically if i had looked around hard enough i would have found all of them on my own. In a way it does a lot to show how lazy a lot of puzzles in other games are, giving you a problem to solve to get a code to a door is easy. On the other hand, giving insights into small details and small difficult to notice things is amazing. For instance, on the dark mansion, i had a vague understanding that something was going on with the candles across the ravine, but figured i had just not figured something out yet

But the thing is that i discovered the artifact glitch and the dying in the fire mechanic by accident wayy before I was supposed to do so. This has caused me to skip literally 75% of the stealth in the game and I didnt explore a lot of stuff because I just didn't need to. I literally didn't know they existed until I watched others play it.
But when I tried to light my artifact by standing in the campfire (im smart ik) and accidentally dying, and just laughing it off, and the second i look back i just see myself standing with the torch lit and the corpses missing, getting that level of shock of not having a clue wtf is going on was just on another level. These moments really make up for the unintended route I've taken, but I would have loved to experience the intense stealth moments.

Mobius opened my eyes about what Adventure and Exploration means. And for that I will thank them forever. Both the game and the DLC are my favorite games. In terms of emotions, the first game is all about exploring a star system and discovering what’s happening with all the excitement and amazement involved (and, to me, a bit of sadness). The DLC is more about mystery and yes, a bit of horror, but as you said, the « correct horror ». Without spoiling, what scared me the most about the DLC wasn’t the aliens, but it was « what’s going on with them. » The slide reels are amazingly well made, from the story telling, the changing missing on the burned slides, the changing missing when you start to understand what’s up with them, or even another kind of atmosphere for late reels, but I won’t spoil them as well.
I was so surprised the DLC would be « that long » and that good. I hope Mobius will release more games like that because it definitely is my favorite genre.

The trailer for the DLC was also pretty good. I was really intrigued by it, but it didn't reveal anything specific, and it did it in a way that wasn't misleading at all.
I think the visual (Stranger) vs written (Nomai) narrative aim to do different things. Maybe it's just cause I know the story already, but I feel like the visual storytelling gives you a more outside perspective, especially because it sometimes seems creepy, so you have this aversion to the people on the pictures (not to mention that they're constantly getting rid of you later). In case of the Nomai writings you're meant to associate with the Nomai and empathize with them, since in the end you're kinda working with them, even if they're not alive anymore. I do agree that the visual storytelling is next level, but when you first play Outer Wilds the text-based storytelling still feel amazing. I'm really glad they didn't go with visual the first time, so the DLC could have this awesome effect as well.
I also like how they made an awesome, cinamatic discovery of the Stranger, and the first entrance was bindblowing, but then you can just do it the quick way.
Weird thing is that I felt like the discoveries of Echoes of the Eye were much better than the original, but I played the original every second I could until I finished it, regardless :D
Also I just expected the DLC to be a good continuation of the original, but it surpassed it just as much, as the original surpassed most other exploration games when it came out.
Even though I think it's slightly too difficult. I'm kinda scared of horror games, and I'm kinda decent and puzzles, so people who have trouble at either of those could find the game a bit too hard.
Luckily Outer Wilds has a pretty good fanbase, so you can find a lot or minimum-spoiler hints that will nudge you in the right direction.
It's really hard to find a game that had such a strong effect on me lately. It's the kind of story that even after 1 week of finishing it, I just can't stop thinking about it.

Flying into the Stranger was terrifying the first time i did it, I was so confused because i lost track of it the first couple of times trying to reach it before it went past the sun so that when i reached it I was genuinely frightened.

I'm not sure the slide shows are better than text bits for a story in general. I don't think slide shows could convey the love of discovery and exploration of the Nomai as well as text. On the other hand, it is much better than text to convey the emotions of Stranger's inhabitants.

I always pronounced Timber Hearth using the actual pronunciation of the word "hearth", so it rhymes with Garth. You know, like the expression "hearth and home."
But when I was watching Bricky's playthrough, I noticed the achievement "Flat Hearther".. which suggests it should rhyme with "Earth."
So now I just don't know!

20 minutes? İ can easily finish this game in 5 to 7 min. Just sleep wake at min 6 go take warp core and dive into dark bremble. Jobs done.

Bricky. I've been hitting myself in the head with a nat to give myself amnesia so I can play the game again. I've done this 4 times now and I have sevier and permanent brain damage. 10/10 plan would reccomend. Worth it

The radio tower is actually a part of the base game, it just doesn’t do anything 😂

When I first played Outer Wilds, it quickly cemented itself as my favorite game, being the first and so far only game to make me sob at the end. I didn't think it could get better. I was wrong.

There were enemies in that section he showed when he discussed them? I just blew out the candles to open the doors, went down the elevator and made sure to avoid the alarms. I heard the enemies, but I could only hear them above me and they never came down the elevators. I didn’t know you could blow out all the candles in the house to free them.

I would like to add a comment regarding not bying the dlc because of fear factor. You can reduced the amount of direct encounter with the AI to almost zero ! And I'm not talking about "reduced frights", wich only makes the owls slower, I mean they are tricks that you can learn in the dlc to avoid the scary moments

One of the two things that terrified me the most was that damn giant ass wave of water. I’ve always had an irrational fear of tsunamis even though they’re super rare so seeing that wave just swipe up those houses gives me chills

Bricky, you're the reason I picked up the base game after watching the first few minutes of your other video. Bricky. I can not thank you enough.

It’s crazy how we all thought that after completing the game a first time, it would be less impactful the second time.
But then after Echoes of the eye, I don’t know you, but I cried. AND I DIDN’T CRY THE FIRST TIME.
This second time I was remembering the time between the first time, and this second time, and I was like “yeah, this is my favorite game of all time”.

When I first entered the stranger I somehow missed the outer hangar so I flew around and completely missed the raft drop reveal, but entering from the other side was just as amazing

I shoulda listened, I wish I had listened. But even after starting the game off with an idea of what was going on, the game is just so spectacularly made and the story is so engrossing that it still managed to awe me. And the story...man it hits hard. I've 100% the game 3 times now and it's become one of my favorite games of all time. Thank you for talking about this game Mr. Brick

The trailer has set our mind to expect something dark and spooky then we see how beautiful the new place is with our jaw on the floor.
Then we see the first picture of them and "oohhh, oookay....".
Then we discover the dream world and "oooohhh, wait! nooo......."
Then we get our first encounter with them and "noooooo! okay trailer you won!"

I bought the Archeologist Edition of Outer Wilds for my first playthrough of the game, and I'm so glad I did. From how the DLC adds to the ending, I would've never been able to forgive myself if I had first experienced the game without the presence of The Strangers.

When I bought the dlc I played through the entire base game again because they said it'd be best if you had a completed log before that, and only near the very end did I find the dlc.
I started the playthrough on the older version of the game without the new exhibit in the museum because my PS4 took ages to download the dlc and the new version, and since I didn't return to the observatory I didn't see that.
Anyway, after only having Dark Bramble and a tiny bit of the Hourglass Twins and Brittle Hollow left to explor I noticed a red glowing thing in the distance. Couldn't actually find it though. A little later I saw a weird tjing on the mal, locked on and promptly kicked the satellite into the depths of space sparking like it was gonna explode any second.
    Didnhave a map anymore either.
So the dlc do be kinda hard to find if you aren't super observant.
Loved the new puzzles though, only needed help from the internet once because the game kept on crashing when I tried to open a door with my scout and I thought there was another way. There wasn't but I figured the info out without that door open and now they fixed the issue I think.

Outer WIlds was one of the best gaming experiences i've ever had on my almost 20 years of gaming. Underrated game, crazy underrated. God damn just watching this video gave me the feels, maybe cause i'm way too affraid of space and sht. But what a feel and a what a time this game gave me. I hope to one day i get to play this DLC and stream it.
