  • Does studying past divisions in the church of Christ enable us to foresee the next division? Maybe.
Would a study of the causes in past divisions help create future reconciliations? Possibly.
Steve Wolfgang has not only studied the histories of divisions surrounding men like Daniel Sommer and Foy Wallace, but has worked at reconciliation in his own time with men like Reuel Lemmons, Rubel Shelly, and Alan Highers.
Unlike many preachers, Wolfgang also has a history of stellar local-work.

Steve has a lot of back stories. This is what makes him one of the best historians of the 21st century. He is open to honest dialogue, disagreement, and study. Whether in a lecture hall or in a small classroom Steve does not desire to impress anyone-simply to be honest with the subject at hand. I often wanted to know his opinion on Bible questions and his straightforward answer was, “A good place to start is ‘what does the Text say?’” I appreciated him as a teacher, elder and preacher.

I have no problem worshipping with a one cup congregation. Just this summer my wife and i attended a congregation in Iowa that was of that persuation and were treated very warmly.

1:02 “The mainstream churches of Christ… exhibit a lot of denominational characteristics” is depressingly true. IMO, preaching in churches of Christ has largely become that of a hospice chaplain. In most locations in America, the “patient” or congregation is not going to get better. The body has been in gradual decline too long. What’s largely being done by preachers now is simply keeping the members comfortable in their indifference, “medicating” them with varying doses of liberalism. The endgame seems to me to be inevitable. Nevertheless, I greatly appreciate the time and effort put forth in this thought-provoking interview.

Accurate but sad thoughts. The sermons and Bible studies are mostly pablum. Our ignorance of the OT is beyond belief (and the Tanakh is the key to understanding the NT.)
Any attempt at deep study is met with stiff resistance.

2:21:58 - "Foy Wallace and Homer Hailey were able to go in and out of Institutional and Non-Institutional meetings."
It is appearing that Caleb is able to go in and out of all circles and be well received.
Great interviews with Shelly, Highers, and now Wolfgang. God bless this work.

As I said to Steve in the interview 1:01:32 - "I'm not a member of their party."
While the people inside the circles are my brothers, I don't wish to be in ANY circles.
Freedom is in Christ's body, but bondage is found in the circles.

Polishing the Pulpit is a political scene for "ministries" to see and be seen, and display their wares.
It's a buddyhood more than it is a brotherhood.

Here is one of many problems that could be stated... The "NI" and "PI" churches have most of the same problems. Both have human institutions (Florida College, Guardian of Truth Foundation, etc.). The ONLY difference is how they are funded and even in that they are not that far off. The Scriptures are the standard and through such we know every good work (II Timothy 3:14-17). The Lord or the Apostles NEVER taught some institution should be started among "brethren" regardless of how such would be funded. Modern day so-called "churches of Christ" are mostly 95% or more just denominations. If most congregations of coC's tried to put a clear Scripture next to what they practice, they couldn't. The Lord's church was not started in a movement "Restoration" or otherwise. Foy Wallace, Ed Harrell, or any other's mentioned in this video did not die to purchase the church (Acts 20:28). While most would say, "duh"; men in modern day coC's are highly idolized as are the "Brotherhood Publications", lectures, etc. Shameful.

For all I know, that could be true, so I’m not disputing your assessment.
That said; What are the specific things that most congregations are practicing to which you would say your statement applies?

I don't believe an argument can be made by "institutional" or "non-institutional" folks that church affiliated schools are scriptural. Daniel Sommer took issue with bible-colleges for two reasons 1) He didn't believe the church fund should financially support a human institution. 2) Perhaps Sommer's even bigger issue with bible colleges is that they trained located preachers which could be argued isn't scriptural either. Sommer was emphatic that elders, deacons, and evangelists were they only approved offices in the Church and the "one man pastor-preacher" was an innovation. He was adamant that elders were to lead and train men in the body to edify the congregation (mutual edification).

    B. C. Goodpasture’s time at the Gospel Advocate cemented this split. An excellent writing on this situation is John C. Hardin’s Ph.D dissertation - downloadable via the internet. Hardin’s work documents how preachers were blacklisted and had to publish letters of contrition in GA before they could get hired again.
The church of Christ is not a denomination but we have made the Church of Christ a denomination through money, power, and unofficial ruling bodies. Cross swords with a major brotherhood work, and see where it ends up. The power of financial sanctions is how the mainline COCs and their colossal works maintain authority over autonomy.
I am a graduate of a school of preaching but not a preacher, in full disclosure.

"The church of Christ is not a denomination but we have made the Church of Christ a denomination through money, power, and unofficial ruling bodies."--this. I agree with you on this statement. Especially "unofficial ruling bodies". Whether it be lectureships, the colleges, schools of preaching, publications, and now podcasts/youtube, there are two many "self-appointed" gatekeepers who want to say "who is in" and "who is out".
The church of Christ is known more for their differences than what we're for. And we need to change that. I'm not sure how? But, being involved in our local churches and worrying about our local congregations (and not the church across the county or state) is a great start. I don't care what Memphis School of Preaching, FHU, Lipscomb, or some publication has to say. I care about what the church I attend does.

@@fanofmyteam The beauty of the first church was her local work. She did not “go abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.” The first century church would be lost today in the twenty-first century’s corporate Christianity. We have too much time to read the Bible and parse it to oblivion.
We spend more money than ever before on schools of preaching, universities, lectureships, conventions, publications, podcasts, TH-cam channels, etc, yet the church is contracting at the rate of one member every 15 minutes and 1 congregation every 3 weeks according to 2014-2018 tracking data.
Are we sure Jesus done it this way?
