This is so cool! Pocket was my introduction to the trading card game and I’ve always wanted to play IRL using these rules with my cards. Maybe more people will start adopting “pocket rules” one day? It makes the game so much faster and more fun IMO
I tried to adapt pocket rules to my physical TCG cards and it worked, but IMO it left a lot to be desired. The physical cards aren’t balanced for the small decks and snappy gameplay of pocket. Maybe if enough of us are vocal about bringing pocket to physical we’ll get printed editions of the Pocket cards one day. I’d love to see some of those secret rares on real cardboard!
My wife and I had recently dusted off our bulk cards and played using pocket rules and it worked surprisingly well! 20 cards in your deck and 20 - 40 energy cards on the side. Retreating or discarding energy goes back to the energy well. The only issues we found were that you can feel the balance discrepencies. The cards in the real TCG are overpowered to be used with Pocket rules. Makes you appreciate how balanced pocket is, despite all the people complaining about the meta.
team rocket deck is too cute man, this is too fun not to try with my nephew 13:40 your call has definitely been heard, a project like this only takes an afternoon and its something we people should consider doing to spend time and attention with the one they love
I think using the real pokemon TCG cards may make the game feel more broken and overpowered, but it should still work. It's just instead of mixing energies in your deck you have a second deck for energies.
It works but when I tried it I wasn’t satisfied. Before I proxied Pocket cards I tried to make a draft cube with regular Pokemon TCG cards using Pocket rules. The Pocket ruleset works really well in the balanced and finely tuned pocket environment where every HP point, energy attachment, and retreat cost pip matters. Traditional Pokemon cards are balanced for a different pace and game scale and I couldn’t get the right feel. Just sharing my own experience!
I've been thinking about this too. I think that like, 99% of pocket can be adapted into an irl format. There are a few instances where I can see cards needing to be changed so it isn't a headache to the flow of the game. E.g. Dragonite's indiscriminate Draco Meteor scattering of 4 shots of 50 damage. That works fine when a computer calculates the RNG for you, but to translate that 1 to 1 irl would be so clunky. That moves would just need to be overhauled I think, or maybe someone more creative than me can make it work. Pretty cool video!
I actually think for current cardpool we can cleanly map 100% of the game to physical cards without needing to make text changes. Dragonite is pretty simple. Each instance of damage is a random chance. Just roll a D6 a few times to select the target for each hit. The opponent, at most, will have four targets. Just assign 1-4 to specific pokemon and re-roll if you hit a 5 or 6. Pokeball is another one that requires a little effort, but it’s still a clean map. We just shuffle the deck and flip cards from the top until the first basic is reached. The only snag here is you either have to make the reveal public info or trust your opponent. I trust my group so it works fine. Thanks for the comment! Check back in a few days for a full cube breakdown!
This is one of those things i've thought about before, yet always was curious how it would play out simply because of the energy ruling. Like, is there a secondary pile of 20-30 energy cards that you pull from every turn? What about multiple energies in a deck? With 2, just have it be determined on a coin flip, with 3 roll a die or something. Alternatively, colored dice work for keeping track of energy, until you get something like Serperior + Celebi, and need like 10 green dice. I don't play too many TCG games, so the use of dice and other markers always slips my mind, I wish I had done this sooner.
The first couple games I played with my kid I used the appropriate energy cards and just pulled them from a pile off to the side. This method worked great because we were playing mono colored decks but it was physically clunky and annoying for my kid to stack energy cards under the pokemon and keep track. So I just moved to a pile of flat marbles. Color doesn’t matter if you are playing mono colored decks and this method was WAY easier for my kid to track, manage, and understand. Very clean. If you want to play pure pocket rules in physical form with meta decks either of these methods would work so long as you have a way to handle the RNG determining which color pops up every turn. Dice would be good too. For the purpose of the draft cube I built and referenced at the end of the video I use a slightly modified rule for energy generation that allows for more control for multicolor decks. For the specifics you’ll have to come back for the next vid!
@Ninjashark12 right, but the energy pile size is ambiguous and would have to be standardized for this style of play. That's why I mentioned using dice, and just pulling them out like a Monopoly banker.
Id just use a coin or a 6 sided die. Heads could be one color and so on and for the die you could do 1&2 3&4 5&6 each being their own color. Or just paint the die or coins the colors you need. Nothing special needed for mono color decks
This is something I would have loved to play during recess in school , as we almost never finished multiple games 😂😂. I’ll be waiting for the next vid!
Do you have videos on the card printing and prepp8ng process? I'm making a TCG of my own and would love to emulate the quality of the cards you printed
Would you be willing to share your card list and how you've been drafting the cards? I've only played mtg cube so I'm not sure how to cube with two players. Very interesting video!
What a well timed question! I literally just post a video covering that exact topic! The BEST way to play Pokemon TCG Pocket IRL! th-cam.com/video/NIuPPrqpJZg/w-d-xo.html Images of the cards included are linked on the description of ^^^ video.
Pokemon tcg pocket is a fun alternative. I can work in whatever manner, but the issue is another. They wasted an immense opportunity, and resources, to design a game that uses cards (therfore can be marketed physically) but once again did not have the feeling of the actual pokemon game: with simultaneous moves, meaningful rock paper scissors choices, and no fucking energy!
IMO this game rules and has all the elements you describe it lacking. It’s not meant to be a replacement of the OG. It’s a fresh take and a welcome one.
It's just an even simpler version of the regular TCG and I really think everything about this game is worse. But there is one rule that I've been wanting for the regular TCG for almost 10 years, and that is the point system. The prize card rule should finally disappear and you should get points for a knockout until the first person reaches 6 points. The prize system ruins the whole deck building and, unfortunately for me, the game too, because the decks without prize cards are just so much more solid, consistent and fluid to play.
I really love the OG TCG but due to factors in my life (Kids, job, ect…) I don’t have time to engage with the game or local playgroups. Pocket makes Pokemon cards accessible to me and I love it!
I think you only make the points you did, as someone who wasn't very into the *real* TCG. Finding energy is just as, if not easier in the real TCGs current META, but most don't play or look at cards enough to beef up their card knowledge. The current PTCG Meta is far more thrilling and exciting than whatever rudimentary, condensed, and weak Meta Pocket could ever produce. Simply not enough of a game. Atleast not yet.
That being said tho I just realised it is a comment on a COMMENT you made about pocket being better, for being like Hearthstone. However this video is about your Proxies, so I will comment that the Proxies are AWESOME. Lol I was thinking of doing the same for Pocket and Inscryption, .45, really any Digital card game.
No argument here that the OG TCG has an excellent meta and is a worthy game! I don’t have the time to engage with local groups around the real paper TCG but Pocket IRL has really been great!
@ leaves me wanting more the second it’s over tho, but it’s good for when you don’t have enough time to invest in a whole game. Also even if a Pocket game runs a lil longer the only thing keeping you from just conceding is your own competitive nature. Low stakes, but also low time and $ investment. All cards are there, and less to keep in mind than real format. I just wish they put the same care into PtcgLive as they did Pocket (app wise) It is functionally a better app that performs far more consistently than the third party run PtcgLive. I like the game, but where is the love and support for the OG TCG from its own company? And why the sudden push for manning the helm of a new condensed format themselves? I’ve been meaning to make a video about pocket since it was teased and announced but wanted to wait. Give myself hands on time and I got too many feelings lol Sry for the novel, I think it’s time I make a video and throw my opinions into the aether
