~ I have always liked Shemp the most. No disrespect to Curly, I just think the Shemp episodes were better made, and as weird as he was, Shemp had a singular style that set him apart.

I always liked Larry best. While the talents of Moe and Curly are obvious, Larry had this air of the common man being assaulted by the slings and arrows of life in the 20th century that hit home. But, really, it's the synergy of the ensemble that is the best character.

Larry's damaged cheek was the reason Besser didn't want slaps. Eye pokes, head-raps, and belly punches were still ok with him. No one took pain better than Larry. He always had an anguished look when his hair was pulled-out, his head has planed... In short, his mugging was hilarious. Larry sometimes had to turn from the camera when Shemp did his schtick- watch the scene when Shemp poses as a dentist and yanks a man's tooth- Larry breaks-up.

I loved the Stooges growing up, and I still do. One of the few shows I can watch a million times and never get tired of them. I feel like they get a bum rap as just being slapstick comedy, because that's just the surface humor. Underneath, there are a lot of puns, gags, double entendres and other smart humor to appreciate.

Agree completely. The layers underneath the obvious slapstick are what makes them appealing to all ages. I remember watching as a child with my dad and there was a reference to a character Baron of Graymatter. I didn't understand why my dad laughed at that and then he explained it meant 'brainless' as in barren of grey matter( brains).
I have fond memories of my dad when I see the Stooges.

I guess that was supposed to be part of the humor. It had a great run for nearly half a century. Thanks to all of you who brought joy and laughter in our home. She was almost fanatical about the Stooges and was the primary reason I got to experience their incredible comedy as a kid. They'll always be the funniest show and act I have ever seen. That's almost certainly never to change. I could still crack up like a kid watching them today. And if reruns are on, my 58 year old father will laugh his ass off to the Stooges along side me today just like when I was a kid.

I used to like them when I was much younger but cannot tolerate them now. They are more like a parody of a comedy team and a bad one at that. They can't compare to real comedy teams like the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello etc. Also they couldn't match the single performers such as W.C. Fields, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and many others. Moe was the worst with his physical abuse and Curly was over-rated in my opinion. Slapstick might be ok in small doses but they overdid it but what irritates me the most are the accidental mishaps. They can't go 5 seconds without bumping into each other or walking into a wall etc. Really? What I did like about their films were some of the supporting actors.

Agree with you very much. However, after Curly and Shemp passed away, the act wasn't very good anymore and the two replacement guys used just simply didn't fit in at all. Moses Howard wanted really bad and tried very hard to get Dudly Dickerson to be a third Stooge, and it would have worked and it would have kept these guys going, however Hollywood wouldn't permit Moe to have Dudley Dickerson as a third Stooge. Probably, out of pure speculation, because at that time the Amos and Andy show was considered by the colored folks out there as a slap in the face making people think that people of color are dumb and stupid, and were not to be taken seriously and that they were viewed as nothing but Uncle Tom's. So, the restriction of having Dudley Dickerson as a third Stooge was something that would be unwanted controversy, and cause protests and riots.

One of the highlights of my day, and favorite hospital staff members ever, going above and beyond doing what he can to made the kids happy. He would surprise me with stuff from events going on downstairs, get me involved in Bingo, or sneak me McDonalds when he got off work. Stooges themselves may not be a big thing for me, but it really does bring up some good memories. I should really go back and watch it again sometime.

First, Moe (born in 1897) died at 77 years old in 1975, not 1977. Second, Curly only had one cameo, a sleeping passenger on the train in Hold That Lion, the only Stooges short that all three Howard brothers were in together. Curly did film one other cameo, as a cook in Malice in the Palace, but it went unused because of how frail he looked. Larry wound up playing the cook. Further, Moe tried to keep the act going after Larry was paralyzed by a stroke and with Larry's blessing recruited Emil Sitka, who acted in 40 of the Stooges shorts, to play the Stooge role of "Harry" who was Larry's brother. There were even a few promotional pictures take of Moe, Emil as Harry and Curly Joe as the Three Stooges, but Moe's health issues kept that version of the Stooges ever appearing on film.

Sorry for this 2nd comment, but when I was a new RN, I was assigned to caring for a young man who was shot by police after an armed robbery. He had been admitted after surgery and my coworkers said that he was nasty and that he'd make mincemeat of me. I went to see him first. He was very quiet. He wanted the TV on. The Three Stooges was on. In seconds, we were both laughing hard! 🤣 We talked about our favorite episodes and we had the same favorite. For the rest of the day, when it was time to change his dressings and give him meds, we would talk and laugh about the Stooges.
It was sad when he was discharged straight to the police and to the county jail to await trial. He was very young and ran with a violent crowd. He thanked me for treating him just like other people and saw his humanity. He promised me that he'd get out of the gang life after serving his sentence. I don't know if he made good on his promise, but I hope so.

I had a school friend who used to do Curly inspired routines. Never was attacked by a clam in my chowder, but that gag slayed me! To this day I still find myself humming their version of “The Three Blind Mice” as their intro.

Moe, Shemp and Curly Howard were undoubtedly three of the funniest comedians to be put on celluloid but for me the most important member of the Stooges was Larry Fine. He brought his finely (pun intended ) tuned calmness and always unsuccessful attempts at reasonableness as an essential counterpoint to the full on mayhem swirling around him.But in the end The Three Stooges were one of the greatest comedy teams in Show Biz and I loves 'em all.

I loved watching these guys and they will always have a place in my heart. Oddly enough, two of the six actors are buried at a Jewish cemetery in east Los Angeles. It was across the street from a fire station I worked at for 12 years. I would sometimes go put rocks on their tombstone. The sheriffs even have a run named after Curly. They did better than most people know. Moe bought the rights early after the decline of the slapstick genre. When the stooges made a comeback he and his brothers did quite well. It's actually pretty odd. There were a lot of vaudeville acts who were popular for a while and then disappeared and the studios buried them. But there were a small handfull who kept their acts alive and experienced a very profitable return when TV became popular. The Stooges were one of those. Laurel and Hardy was another. Abbot and Costello too. Those did well because someone in the group retained or bought the rights, betting on them.
