    What I don’t like about is that it doesn’t account for a rest day, a proper rest day. I’ve noticed I feel kinda guilty when I have a day off and dot go out etc. I don’t want to manipulate the goal to just close the ring, but equally it would be nice for the developers to “allow” occasional day off and help people to keep it balanced. That’s just my opinion though.

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      This is where finding a good balance is really key. If your goal requires an intense workout, rest days will kill your streak.
      If your goal is set to something more casually achievable, you can have a rest day, walk to get a coffee or take a short walk, and still hit your goal.
      Exercising doesn’t have to be high intensity every day. Doing yoga or taking a walk counts, too.

    I have had my watch 11 months and could never get my exercise ring completed without feeling like I was going to die. I was so missing my Fitbit for a while there. But then I re-checked all the settings this week and found out they now have an option for people who are on calcium channel blockers that lower heart rate and blood pressure. I have been closing my rings for five days now and that feels so motivating. I have my goals at 30 minutes exercise, 650 cal and 12 hour stand goal.

      Oh my I relate to this. I had a Fitbit for 10 years and moved to Apple Watch for the other features and couldn’t adjust to not being step focused. It’s been 18 months and I’m only now getting to grips, or should I say making the effort to get to grips with the rings. I’ve just ignored them. However since I started paying conscious attention what they actually mean and how they work, I’ve found them super motivational

    My move goal was set to 170 move minutes, but, recently, I was beating it. I bumped it up to 180 minutes to challenge myself. I am still beating it, but I’m definitely not ready to move it up to 190 or 200 move minutes yet. This comes from a long time couch potato or should I say bed potato. Finally I got off my butt and started moving more.

    I’m flustered with mine. It’s all about your size! Mainly how much you weight. I’m on the small size. I’m 6’2” and weight 150 lbs. my move goal is set at 720 I am very active my steps are usually over 11k and can’t close my goal. So one day I bumped my weight up to 200lbs. After that I was having no problem closing the move goal. My friends are let’s say a little over weight , they will have half the steps that I have and their move goal will be over 700 easy. If I lower my move goal than they will give me crap. 🙄

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Calorie burn is all about effort required. At 150lbs, you’re moving less weight, which requires less work than a 200lb person. I would keep the weight honest, and focus on activity intensity, not steps.
      11k steps is mostly meaningless if you aren’t getting your heart rate up..

    Helpful. (But I do have to say it sounds like the main suggestion is “aim low”. Lower your expectations so you can achieve your goal. If you hit it every day? Your not pushing yourself. I don’t mean you have to expect extreme high counts. But ... hitting a low and easily attainable goal is ... well, not a goal - is it?)

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t aim low, aim for achievable. If you constantly struggle to hit your goals, you’re more likely to give up on them.
      Not saying it has to be easily attainable, but if your goals require a 60-90 minute high intensity workout every day, you’re either going to burn out or get hurt.

    I'd like to know the algorithm Apple uses to count exercise minutes. As an example, when I do an Outdoor Bike Ride for an hour it sometimes only gives me credit for 45 minutes. Any thoughts?

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe for most workouts, it’s based on heart rate. If you’re biking fairly lazily, you’ll get less minutes than the total ride.
      According to Apple: “Every full minute of movement that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk counts toward your daily Exercise and Move goals.”
      (Source: support.apple.com/en-us/HT207941)

      @@cultofmac So you mean I don’t have to open my workout apps to choose outdoor walking while I want to walk around the city? And does cleaning house like mopping etc can add your exercise hour? Little bit confused because sometimes I just doing laundry and cleaning around the house then my exercise ring increase. In other ways, I don’t want to miss my walk around the city not count as an exercise when I forgot to access the workout app before I walk

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don’t have to actively start a workout in the workout app for it to count as exercise minutes.
      Ideally, if you’re doing a dedicated workout, it’s best to track it so you get complete heart rate data and a more accurate tracking of your calories burned, but if you’re just walking around and running errands or shopping or mowing the lawn, that all will count passively as you go about the day.
      I have many days that I get 30+ minutes without tracking anything.

    my move goal is 500 calories. I used to be able to hit it. But now with working from home I haven't been able to hit it even when I do a full hour workout. So should I move my goal down or just start moving more?

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either option can totally work. Intensity of the workout can obviously increase your calorie burn, but so can an overall increase in how much you move.
      If finding time for more isn’t necessarily an option, turning down the move goal by 100 calories is also totally valid. It all depends on how you’re motivated.
      Does burning that extra 100 calories excite you more than closing your rings?

  • @pgarland2

    Can I set 1000 steps an hour and will it prompt me to achieve my step goal

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The watch doesn’t use steps (mostly because steps is a pretty vague, arbitrary measurement).
      You could use an app like Streaks and set a step goal for the day. I believe it can remind you multiple times each day, and pulls data from health.
      Either way, the better approach is not hourly activity, it’s daily.

    It’s flawed. On Sunday I went a hike for 19 miles (30km) over 6 hours. On Tuesday I cycled 4 hours over 45 km, off road. On Monday I did 1.5 hours at the gym (at home).
    Yet, whilst I closed my Exercise and Move Rings (over triple) on Sunday and Tuesday. Apparently i didn’t hit my Stand Goal 😂. But on Monday i did, even though i did less exercise and sat down more.
    The problem is, that it doesn’t work unless you sit down as well as stand... so it’s clearly flawed

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      6 hours and 4 hours (Sunday and Tuesday) are both short of the 12 hours needed to close your stand ring, though.
      From Apple: Close your Stand ring by getting up and moving around for at least 1 minute during 12 different hours in the day.
      Clearly on Monday, while you did less exercise, you stood up & moved (while wearing your watch) more hours.

      That's A great goal, I was at 500 for years and recently pushed it to 1,000. I can usually hit it, but I'm super frustrated when I don't. If I hit 800 or 900 I'm still WAY above my previous 500, but feel like I failed, lol.
      I think it depends on how you view and value the rings. If you want to hit a REALLY long consistent chain, a lower goal is better. I like the idea of shooting for 200%.
      On the other hand, here are 2 options to consider.
      Option A.
      You're set at 500 and hit that 7 days a week with 1 or 2 days at 200%.
      5 days x 500 = 2,500
      2 days x 1,000 = 2,000
      Total = 4,500
      + All rings closed!
      Option B:
      You're set at 1,000 and only get 5 of 7 days and have 2 days at 700 or 800, even though you didn't close your rings for 2 days and your broke your chain, you did WAY more activity.
      5 days x 1,000 = 5,000
      2 days x 700 = 1,400
      Total = 6,400
      But, 2 "failed" days and no consistent chain.
      Depends on what motivates you and how you motivate yourself.
      I'm going to play with both options for a month and see which I like better and which one produces better results/outcomes for me.

      Depends - do you regularly hit 800 in a day? Are you motivated by closing that ring every day? If 800 is attainable but not insanely challenging, that’s pretty good.

    Mines is set at 2000 calories per day. It takes roughly 160 minutes of exercise to complete. I don’t do it all in 1 go. I usually have 3 workouts for the day with a 2 mile run in the evening. Lockdown has enabled me to close my rings. I’ve also only had my Apple Watch 5 for 2 weeks. Lol I do feel like I’m burning out, but there are a plethora of low impact, high intensity cardio routines on TH-cam to help with on those days where I feel too drained to do anything.

  • @Techlifeandmore
    @Techlifeandmore 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am confusion. My move goal is minutes not calories. Also, I can adjust my exercise goal. Mine is at 60 minutes. I can also adjust my stand goal. However, I keep the stand goal at 12 hours and the exercise goal at 60 minutes. I wish that I could do more with the exercise and stand goals because I beat them every single day.

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Move goal (red) is calorie based. Exercise (green) is minutes of exercise.
      Prior to watchOS 7, you couldn’t change the stand or exercise rings, so it was always 30 minutes & 12 stand hours.
      Ultimately, cranking up the exercise minutes makes the time commitment higher, but doesn’t necessarily mean huge leaps in calorie burn. It’s not about how long you exercise, it’s about the quality of the exercise.

    • @Techlifeandmore
      @Techlifeandmore 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cultofmac I still wish I could crank the exercise goal to 90 or 100 minutes and the stand goal up to maybe 13 or 14 hours.

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try upping the move goal instead… you don’t get anything extra for 200% of the exercise.

      Is 600 active calories “unbelievably low”? That’s typically 50+ minutes of exercise...
      A 300% would be 1800 active calories burned - that’s almost double my daily BMR.

    I totally disagree, 500 is way, way, way to low that’s just a lazy way of using your iwatch.
    Set to a 800-1000 and get of your arse and push HARDER!!! No pain no gain!!!

    • @cultofmac
      @cultofmac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's all about exercising safely & maintaining motivation, though. If it's set at 800 or 1000 and you struggle to get your goal on an active day, you're less likely to stick with it long term.
      If you can get and maintain a streak at 500 (even on a more casual day with just a nice walk), and get the benefit of 200% once in a while, you're more likely to stick with it and find the watch motivating, not intimidating.
