I always hated the misunderstanding of this amazing scene. Let me break it down literarily. They put the legendary RB26 engine of han’s car into this father’s Ford Mustang. It perfectly represents Sean assimilating to Japan but also remaining proudly American. He faces off the antagonist with the spirit of Han and the acceptance of his father. The RB26 Mustang an American Soldier with the Heart of a Samurai.
Nothing better than seeing a 1969 fastback Mustang with an RB26DETT R33 single turbo conversion engine America and Japan went in bed and had a baby Japerican, it makes a tear to my eyes :.)

Since the 1940s yea, American V8s are semi-common in Japan, V8 pony cars such as the Firebird Trans Am and Mustang Mach 1 were part of Japan's growing street racing scene back in the 1960s to mid 1980s and some of the fastest engines to run Yatabe at the time was a Chevrolet 454.

It's been many years but if I recall the dad got on his case about not being serious enough about anything in life and running when things got tough. So him asking to use the body and not giving up or acting out, was an adulthood moment. Only slightly undercut by the fact that he looks like 35 in this scene, haha.

What the movie is trying to represent about an American muscle car with a nissan engine is Sean is an American living in Japan with a Japanese heart. The empty mustang with no engine also represents how empty Sean was when he moved to Japan. When he met Han, Han gave him his "heart" by training him and helping him adapt in Japan, the Nissan engine represents Hans "heart". ( sorry for my bad english)

My grandfather is a well experienced car mechanic and auto repair man and I remember when I was little, I asked him if you can put that Nissan engine into that mustang, and he told technically it’s possible to do that

The spark plugs are very sooty, this is a sign that the engine is running rich (too much fuel not enough air) and possibly is making the turbo lag or is making the acceleration inconsistent, which would make drifting a lot harder to do and make the car more unpredictable.
I think what it meant was, a bad spark plug would not let combustion to happen, therefore not having a powerstroke from that cylinder, and the fuel going into the exhaust system and/or into the turbocharger. Spitting the fuel out, not using it.
It probably still has the ignition in it and if you have the right electronics any ignition can pair to any engine even if it was gone, it’s the symbolism once you have the keys, you own it
