I Was Wrong About 'Days Gone' And I Apologize | Luke Stephens

  • As for Days Gone, I felt as though after playing through the first half, surely the game would have shown me the majority of things that it had to offer. After all, usually games will give you all of the tools you’ll need in the first half and then spend the last half playing around with the mechanics. Whether you look at The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, or Lego Star Wars, this is always the case. It was an assumption I grant you, but I felt as though it were one justified. Much to my surprise, Days Gone feels like a totally different game in the last half compared to the first. It changes completely and I went from being insulted by its mediocrity to being amazed at its potential. Basically, the game is boring and bland until it isn’t. If that sounds excessively vague, don’t worry, I’ll explain. Point being, I made an assumption and made a video based off of that assumption, and for that I am sorry. I learned my lesson and won’t be doing that again.

    The joy of fighting the massive hordes would have no impact if that's how the game started. It went from Resident Evil 2 to the best elements of Crackdown 2 in one game. It's an astounding achievement. This game was amazing in how it made a dozen enemies seem like a dangerous situation early-game, then by the end of the game I can take on entire hordes of 100+ enemies, thanks to the tools, weapons & strategies I had discovered & honed over time to get to that point.
    I utterly disagree with your approach to how the game should have shown this element of itself sooner - it would of ruined the pace totally.

    • @nixilis42
      @nixilis42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I fully agree with your statement. The feeling of despair in the beginning when you are faced with just a handful of zombos, to the satisfaction of the endgame hordes being wiped out with the tools you earned, just beautiful.
      There's a difference between being given the tools from the beginning, to earning them by completing a task or two.

    • @TheGreatJon
      @TheGreatJon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@nixilis42 Exactly. I don't think the pacing was a problem with the game, I really enjoyed it overall.
      The game had other issues - I hated how rapidly melee weapons broke, it felt TOO gamified to fit the looting game mechanic. Especially when playing on harder difficulties, I had to get a new baseball bat... every 2 enemies killed. It just made melee weapons un-fun and mostly pointless - they weren't very lethal, but they were very expensive, and very fragile. Terrible balance for that mechanic

    • @maynardburger
      @maynardburger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed 100%. My only issue is that they introduced 'horde-ready' weapons too abruptly. You go from being nearly useless against them to being ready for action in moments, essentially. And because those horde weapons were so powerful and had so much ammo, it also kind of trivialized much of the rest of the game as well. I think if I replay the game, I'm gonna see how I fare without unlocking the ammo upgrade perk.

    • @ElectricAlien577
      @ElectricAlien577 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maynardburger
      Honestly, you can take on all but the biggest hordes as you go through the game normally. Clearing ambush camps and towns gives you more than enough supplies/explosives to take out most of an early game horde. Then you can pick off the stragglers with your pistol and crossbow. Once you get a basic assault rifle from tuckers camp, your pretty much home free to kill every horde in the early-mid game. Everytime my inventory fills up with supplies, I go seek out a horde to use them up.
      Now when I play through a new game, even on hard 2, I take out every horde almost as soon as I encounter them. Sometimes I go clear a camp for supplies first, then go take them out.

    • @hekam
      @hekam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I hated the motor bike re fueling but that what kept me going to upgrade my bike. same goes for the horde. You're probably the first reviewer I've seen that states the pacing is wrong. Having played through and working on the platinum now...I feel as though the pacing is exactly how it should be. Once you pick up the napalm molotov the hordes become much more doable and you don't have to wait until the "end game." Although it close to the completion. Hordes are tough and it makes no sense to allow you to face them until you have about completed the campaign.

      And it's not even really correct. The 2nd half of the game isn't 'completely different' from the first half. It's not like hordes didn't exist in the first half of the game, you just couldn't take them on. The only thing that changes in the 2nd half is that you can. Which is notable, but it doesn't totally change everything about the experience. And in fact, it's for the better that you couldn't fight them initially and any encounters were about running away. You needed to feel afraid of them. If you could start taking them out early on, they'd have lost all impact two thirds of the way through, especially since the act of taking on a small horde isn't that much different from a larger one, you can just do it quicker.

    For me this game was fantastic the moment I turned it on, I Never felt bored like I did with other open world games like spider man, or assassins creed games. All missions and side quests offered in this game were very well tied to the main plot and never felt like I had to grind just to get 100%. Every single moment for me in this game was fun not once did I do a quest or mission where I felt bored but still had to do it. For me this game is in the top three games off all time. And a huge bonus was the length of the game, paying $60 for a 10-20 hour game is too much, I felt this game was worth every penny. Amazing story, amazing open world, amazing characters, and great sense of progression.
    Edit: and your comment about taking hordes on right at the start, I disagree, seeing a horde early in the game freaked me out and I ran for my life, and I was scared of the horde and that fear really made the world scary, and that was the point.

    I like the slow unfolding of a story along with the characters progress. For my son of 12 on the other hand, who is used to play ADHD-type games such as Fortnite this game is not fast enough by far. He wants to take on the big hordes within 10 minutes of the game. I realy like to feel out the environment en to 'grow' into this post-apocalyptic scene. The first 10hrs the freakers scared me a LOT and I love that. Gradually the Deacon's abilities and my nerves get stronger to take on bigger and bigger challenge. As a company owner and dad of 4! I rarely have time to play, so a few hours per week playtime is the max I can squeeze out of my schedule. After 20+ hours I took on my first hordes this week and I love it.
    I 'm emotionally not ready for the saw-mill horde yet.
    Some minor points of critique are:
    - Deacon is a mouse to the cat until I arrived at the camp in crater lake and was suddenly able to buy weapons that are 10x better than what I had. That made it too easy for a while.
    - When I got the tour from Cpt. Kouri where Deacon say his wife's name is Beth (or something), behind him there's the best melee weapon of the game. Bam, no more searching. And that's sad.
    - I never have to fear entering a house or a building. There are never freakers or enemies inside. I would love to have a freaker jumping my back while scavening the kitchen. :-)

    It takes balls to admit you were quick to judge the game, but you are right about the frame rate issues & many other things that bog the experience down. Thanks for revisiting this, one of my favorites.
    It's a really great game, and I'm torn that there's no sequel.
    I like the early game where you fear the horde and look forward to being able to take them later. It's a core roleplaying element, the building of a character to power.
    The writing, acting, character development, sound design, soundtrack, art design, environment, animations, all excellent. The details make for a truly immersive tapestry.
    The plot I call "local epic"; events are of utmost importance to the characters who are striving to save their little piece of the apocalypse, not the world, and that's pretty endearing, really.
    Rather than wishing for something half the length, I'd rather it was double what it is. I was thrilled that the story continued when I thought it was going to end, and after it was over, it left me with a longing that great games do to be able to continue making a difference in this world.
    I think Sony made a mistake not allowing Bend to do a sequel or at least some DLC. We need to see what happens with NERO and Kouri, and we've got to see that puppy grow up. I read they're working on another game using Days Gone systems--different game, but, I'll be there for it.

      Haha I only finished Bioshock a couple days ago after over ten years! First started it on the 360, then have had the full collection on X1 for a few years lol! Interestingly, the 3rd Bioshock one kept my attention better, I finished it pretty quick on the 360 years back. The first one just seems to go forever.

    i thought tucker was actually a great character. Didnt have a problem with her voice acting either. My problem with the voice acting all came from the bizarre outbursts fro. Deacon. Something was off with the directing there.

      LOL yes the outbursts were weird and also didn’t like when cope would go on the radio to talk and Deacon always had to be “extra” angry and yell about what cope said.

    Hi Luke, just discovered your channel, love it. Just a quick response to the video.
    Having brought the original playstation on the day of release, for some reason subsequent consoles, ie the PS2 & PS3 didn't excite me like that first brilliant machine. Roll on XBOX & HALO and I was hooked and very happy with my choice of console. Ah how I remember the days of NINTENDO V's SAGA , I'm 59 btw. Then I watched the E3 of Days Gone and it blew me away. So much so I brought a PS4 just to play this game. It had me hooked from start to finish, I could not get enough and with the virtually go anywhere you want open world sandbox. I was happy as a pig in sh1t. The only thing that winds me up, Deacon constantly talking about coming back later to blah blah blah. It's still a game I play regularly and aling with TLOU2 is the reason I have upgraded to the PS5 and brought an all singing, all dancing TV to play them on. I have even set my own challenge , Google Days Gone a new and tougher challenge for the details. It's pretty challenging if I say so myself. Here's another for you mount your bike and hunt down and kill three bears, it's that simple. Trust me you will have one hell of an Adventure. This game is superb and a challenge to complete. The fact you can finish the game and still have plenty to do and that you can resporn enemies , is outstanding.

    6:50 idk why people jump into RPGs and open world games expecting immediate resolution and gratification within the first hour or so of the game. Take red dead 2 for example, the game starts slow because it has to set the tone and introduce a multitude of characters and events. Do you really think that if Red Dead 2 was just a couple of missions and then arthur and micah fight on the mountain and arthur dies 5 hours into the game that it would have been praised so highly? Open world games are a commitment, its like reading a book, you gotta read through 500 pages or so to get to the end so that the full story is recognized and the ending makes sense. In my opinion Days Gone has great pacing and the first few hours are slow because the devs knew that you wouldnt be ready to take on the full force of a horde without being a fairly experienced player. Also it gives you time to endear yourself towards Deacon and Boozer so that in the later game you care about the emotions, struggles, plot twists, because theres always that one reviewer (who plays about 20 minutes of the game) that says "the ending would have been great if we even cared about these characters by this point." My advice to everyone is DO NOT buy a game based on critic reviews. TH-camrs dont read hate comments because it can be hurtful and makes them wonder why they keep going. Critic reviews are the epitome of hateful youtube comments for Developers. If you see a game that looks interesting, buy it without a second thought, play it from start to finish and form your own opinion. And if the game is bad oh well you at least gave it a shot, but if the game is incredible and you love it to death, then thats something you can only recieve by taking that leap and making a decision on your own without the Critic reviews by people that glorify First person shooters and Battle Royales and when they're forced to play an Open world game they play maybe 2 hours max and write about how shit of a game it is so that they can go back to reviewing the games that they like playing. All critics are biased so form your own opinions.

    I can't agree with your conclusion about pacing. I was glued to this game, came into it with no expectations and loved every second of it.
    I'm on my 4th playthrough now, about halfway through with Peaceful Lake and it seems like I'm just blasting through, right up until I bump into a horde by accident...
    The pacing was *all* about telling the story, building the suspense, sucking you into that world so that when you were called in to take on a horde you were absolutely certain you were going to die. I honestly figured it was one of those missions where the goal was to fail so they could change the arch of the story.
    The worst thing about Days Gone is that there isn't a Days Gone 2.

    I’ve just finished playing, I’ve wanted to play for a while but was put off by the reviews. However since most of the world is currently locked down I figured this was a good time to give it ago, especially now it’s discounted on the PS Store. I didn’t enjoy the game at first, but I stuck with it (seeing as there’s not much else to do) and I’m glad I did. I think once you get better kit, it becomes more fun. I was slightly disappointed with the glitches and bugs, I think as a PS exclusive these should have been dealt with prior to release. Playing in 2020 with the latest patch releases and there’s still a lot of bugs. All that said, I hope they make a sequel!

  • @StriFe860

    So the game SORT OF redeems itself at the end, but for me a game is required to be fun almost all the way through, so having to tredge through hours of mediocre gameplay to get to the good stuff isn't a selling point for me. Perhaps if this game ever goes on a ridiculous sale (or free on ps plus), then i'd be willing to give it a go.
    I have no hard feelings against this game, it's all about saving money on a game that would frustrate me and instead spending that money on something that won't.

      Eh, I don't need instant gratification all the way through like a Call of Duty game. I think Kingdom Come is a good example - the game kicked my fucking ass for the first ten hours but I could tell that there was a good, fun experience underneath if I was willing to put in the time. The problem of Day's Gone is that it gives no indication of a larger or deeper experience beyond the opening acts. It's a surprise, a welcome one - but a surprise that a lot of gamers lack the patience to stumble upon and that's the fault of the developer's for not dropping bread crumbs that indicate something greater.

    • @StriFe860

      @@fuzzydunlop7928 Oh when it comes to games i don't need instant gratification, but i do however need the game to be overall enjoyable in its gameplay so that i enjoy the core of playing games which would be playing them.
      So when a significant amount of people imply that the game doesn't become enjoyable until the end, i am much less likely to see the worth, unless to me the gameplay looks enjoyable enough to last me all the way, which this doesn't.

      @@fuzzydunlop7928 Days Gone is also decidedly NOT an RPG. I expect the beginning of an RPG to be a slog. You have to build up your character prior to being able to do anything cool. But this? Days Gone is story-driven, and if the story is just alright and the gameplay isn't great, why would any player continue to play?

    Honestly, I was glad to find out I couldn't mow the hordes down from the start. The limited weaponry, short focus time and amount of damage that Freaks could do made me appreciate how deadly shit could get at a moment's notice if I wasn't paying attention or just blasting away with abandon. I respected the hordes and when I finally took one of the smaller groups of 60 or so down, I felt good about it. Having them be so easily toppled would dissolve any tension the world of Days Gone has, imo. So the slower scaling to be able to take them on...not a problem for me. Glad you stuck in and found some enjoyment in it. :)
