  • I have 5 reasons why I love this camera so much and why photographers love using it. This 14 yr-old, 12 megapixel, full frame DSLR camera still has people wanting it. D700 owners are not letting them go and every month, it's getting more difficult to find one in pristine condition.

The D700 deserves it's Legend status...the images it can produce have been some of the best I've ever seen from any camera...Which is why I'm buying another !! Wanted 1 forever. This tank doesn't follow the light toy feel that hits so many new cameras today. Got mine used for $350.00 with only 23k on the clock. Got the MB-D10 battery grip too and some D3 batteries. I use a wrist strap keeps it comfy. Got used 24-120mm and a 24mm lens, all used. My Sony a7iii x 2 are my workhorses. I kept mine for pleasure, not work. This is a beast is why I keep doing it. Sonys are for my Church, but my D700, and my Canon 1DX are my special cameras.I want a D3s, but in no hurry. This is just fine. For now. I have no quams with the D700. Yeah it keeps me honest where the Sony helps me out, but the D700 rewards your effort. My 1DX is in between the Sonys and my Nikon. My unstoppable 1DX is the last man standing camera. The Sony 7iii x 2 are my event grab and go church cameras. The D700 is the sip slowly and enjoy the ride for the joy of it. Like a fine wine, I don't hurry it, I could, but that is what my Sonys and Canon are for. I have the D700 because I relish the time with it. It is special. Only thing I would want is better histogram support, that is it. Love this camera.

Hey, you can’t go wrong with a D700, D3, and or the D610. I use all three for all sorts of photography from weddings, sports, portraits, commercial work. The 610 gives you the beautiful large files when needed without focus issues, or any issues really. The D700 and D3 are work horses that produce exceptional images in the field and studio.

I got mine brand new in 201. Nothing beats the ergonomics of the D700 - even compared to modern day cameras. It's still going strong after 250,000 actuations or so. It feels right, be it with a light 50mm or clunky 70-200 f/2.8 lens. I once accidentally dropped the D700 (with the AF-S 17-35mm/f2.8 attached to it) for 2 meters on a concrete floor. The only damage was a slightly chipped lenshood.

I love my D700. The viewfinder is amazing and bright, such a pleasure to compose through. I've easily enlarged portraits to 24x30 no worries. I like that it still has the built in flash that I can run in commander mode with two groups of remote flashes. The only drawback is that it is LOUD. That shutter slaps! Some people might like that though, especially when shooting continuous. RAT-A-TAT-A-TAT-A-TAT!!

When I got into weddings, NYC street photography & model portfolios, I got a D3 & D700. My D300, D800 rest comfortably in my equipment closet. My Z7 is only used for sports. If you can grab either a D700 & D3, check how many shots it was used for and grab one. The D700 has a 95% viewfinder and only one card slot but is lighter using the same sensor. Both are in like new condition even being bounced around since 2008.
Try the 3D focus tracking for razor sharp images every time even with moving targets.

I bought mine about 2 years ago and never looked back. You can easily print 20x30 of this camera and those prints look amazing. But there is something about its color profile especially with skin tones that is simply unique to this camera. I do model shoots with it all the time and the photos just look amazing.
People who like to harp on this being outdated tech are just insecure about their own photography. This camera is amazing.

Bought mine within months of2008 release. Haven't used it in...30 minutes. For web, plenty of megapixels. I max out at 1600 iso but shoot it in daylight or bouncing flash so not an issue. A shot at 1600 iso won best in class, best in show and one of the 10 best photos of the year in a N CA PPA competition. Not as much resolution as my d850, but in bad weather, who cares if this gets trashed after 15 years of use. Never a lick of trouble. Funny, have been shooting a near identical camera a lot, a 1996 F5 film camera that was the original of this design that carried right through to the d850. I didn't go mirrorless, I went sensorless. Primarily use the d850 for camera scanning film. I am used to less resolution with film so the d 700 lower resolution is more like my film work. Yes the skin tones are wonderful, especially with a voigtlander 58 1.4. Hey, Paul Simon never sang about canon and definitely not sony... although my receiver and amplifier are sony .

I got mine a few years ago as a gift and had it refurbed by a local camera repair shop and have loved it since.
My favorite memory was shooting at a photo meetup where one of the models stopped me and thanked me for “having a loud shutter, I can tell when I can change poses after a few actuations, with those mirrorless shooters I don’t hear any feedback”

@@alfredoshootsframes I just bought one "As Is" from KEH for $14. No battery or charger. My thinking was to scavenge parts from it. But, for kicks, I put a battery and card in it and mounted a lens. It works! And it's not mint, but pretty clean. So I ran a shot on Check My Shutter Count. 34000.
But wait--there's more! On the same order, for no really logical reason, I bought another rated Ex or Ex+, for $117. KEH underrates their stuff. That baby's pristine. Shutter count 1695.. It's getting a little harder to find nice D700s. But it seems like everybody has D200s, and dirt cheap. Also D80s and D90s, which aren't as tank-like, but have very good sensors.
As for the sensors, the D700 is one of a kind. Well, the D3 has the same sensor with a different filter, and afficianados seem to prefer the D700. The CCD on the D200 doesn't have quite them same avid following, but it's well thought of. But the D200, D300/300s, and D700 are all built pretty similarly and share some accessories. Any of them is just a joy to shoot with. For the right price, even an old beater might be worth trying.

You're so right. D700 is a legendary camera. The iso performance and small raw files are a great combo. Too bad, I just got the D800. Nice camera and the color it gives is amazing. But with 36MP, it is impossible to get the focus with the viewfinder. This thing is driving me crazy. It has the left focus problem and back focus issue. I think I will sell it and buy maybe a D3, a D700 or a D610

I bought D700 camera new some years ago and sold it just last year. I wanted the greatest and best instead. Now that I have the Canon R5 which is great for fast focus and I use it for birding, wildlife and even indoor rodeos. Looking back at my images from gosh 10 years ago or so the D700 images were just full of character. Not sterile like the new "modern" cameras. I still have the d810 and my go to, can do everything d4s that I sold and bought back. I will be buying back a d700 for street photography, casual use and maybe some landscapes. My favorite F mounts lens were the 85mm f/1.4, the 14-24 f/2.8, the 16-35, f/4, 24-70 f/2.8....Gosh I liked all of the F mount lenses. The Canon RF lenses are above my pay scale. Yes they are faster, sharper and I can not say anything negative about them but the cost. At the time I bought the R5 Nikon did not have a ML camera that I thought I would like and even was thinking of forging ML and buying a Nikon d850. I am still questioning my ML decision. The D700 is as good as it gets and like I said I will be rebuying and using for many projects.

Got my D700 brand new in 2011. Still going strong. I have a D850 as well but as someone who still shoots film, I prefer the files out of the D700. With the D700 files running through Nik Color efex I can get really close to simulating film. No chance with the D850. The files are just too clean and sterile. These modern 40mp cameras are great if you want a xerox type copy of a scene no doubt but I want more than that. The D850 is great for scanning my negs with a macro lens though! Couple of things to unpack here. 1. Great camera for many reasons. 2. Sensor was one of the only (along with the D3 - I believe) that was made for the camera and not by Sony and demonstrates monochromatic noise - which to my knowledge is what makes it different and more "filmic". The camera was ahead of its time with the number of AF points and 3D tracking , and with the D3 battery, up to 8 fps. I still love the images that come out of the D700, and still use it, but for wildlife, action, sports the Z9 has so many advantages - so it's not fair to compare. The d700 with vertical grip is actually heavier than the Z9. The LCD is not up to standards of today and it is a noisy camera. I can get over 7000 images on a 325G CF Express B card shot at 20 fps at full size all day. I know, it's not the same. Just saying. I haven't even mentioned shooting wide open and nailing focus at f0.95, f1.4, f1.8 or f2. All that said, you have to love the D700 for what it meant at the time, and what it delivers that is different, and use the tool when it fits your needs or wants and desires. It's a passion thing, and many Nikon shooters still have it for this camera. As to what people think when I am out shooting with the D700, who cares. Those that shoot Canon with the 5D Classic or the 6D Mark 1 will tell you the same thing about those Canon cameras with their unique color science and warm skin tones and punch colors. Favorite lens for this camera: It was the Nikkor 180mm f2.8 AF D lens until I picked up a used copy of the Nikkor 200mm f2 for outdoor portraits.

@@BoostLeekdMedia My pleasure. Enjoyed your video. Between us, the 200mm f2 is a crazy, special beast that also needs to be appreciated for what it is. Not sure if the 135mm f1.8 Z-mount, S Plena will top it or equal it - but it might. If you have shot the 200mm f2 before, you know what I'm going to say. I'm an amateur shooter and I bought it because I liked the look, I shoot wide open out doors and indoors (sports, action) a bunch. Now, I will be the first to say a set of zooms for sports (i.e. hockey 24-70, 70-200 etc f2.8s) are much more useful. That said, every time I take a shot with the 200mm f2 (not to mention the ISO gets cut in half) - the players, friends, and people I shoot (and my amateur friends that shoot Sony and Canon) all marvel at the images on the back of camera. The smooth transitions in out of focus regions is something special. I've had two friend go price a 200 f1.8/f2 after I've shown them many images. So for me, that lens is something else (even on the D700). On the Z9, with human subject eye detection, the AF is fast enough and accurate enough to nail shots with high consistency. The D700 shots with it are just special - even when compared to the 180mm f2.8. Thanks again for your video and return post. Happy Shooting.

I started out on the D700 as my first full frame body and LOVED it. For some reason I moved to Canon and shot with it for a few years. But now I just bought a lightly used D700 and am getting lots of AF D lenses for it. The only G lens I have is the 50 1.8 which is my favorite neutral bokeh 50 out there. The only lens where I spent a larger amount of money on is the 85 1.4D which I got for about $450 (I need at least one lens with creamy bokeh mush in my collection). I was quite susprised how well the 70-210 AF works (much sharp) and how pleasant the bokeh is at the long end for a zoom that only costs $100. Some people complain about the weight of the body but I like it because it helps with stability when you don't have VR, I added a grip to get portrait release button and even more stability. The only thing that ever really annoyed me is the loud slapping noise from the mirror. You better get used to it if you want to use the D700.

If you're doing just photography only, the D700 wins against the Canon 5D. Both the 5Dmk2 and D700 were released the same year. It's hard to say which camera is "better" as it really does depend how skilled the photographer is. Both are excellent cameras. One of the things the 5dmk2 has over the D700 is the video recording. Other than that, both are excellent cameras. We can talk all day about specs but that's not photography :)

I just pulled the trigger on a light used Nikon D3 (150k clicks) thanks to your review. And plan to pick up a D700 after a few months. I am really digging these older Pro bodies at such cheap prices.
There are rumors running around (cannot establish if they are true) that Nikon wanted the D700/D3/D3s to have film like characteristic to pull Pros over to DSLR from SLR's at the time. Keep in mind the D3 was the first Flagship Digital Full Frame Camera Nikon ever made. I would love to see proof that this rumor is true. But from what I can tell the D3/D700 have some of the best grain then any other DSLR. Open to hear if anyone has a better back story on this generation of DSLR's.
The Nikon D3 and D700 are so close in everything. But the D700 has just slight better colors. And the D3 has better low light handling of noise vs the d700. I wish they had made a D3 with the D700 sensor. That to me would be my dream DSLR, form fact of the pro body with the colors of the D700 sensor.
You want to talk about wear, D3's in general are usually "Worn out" looking. The one I bought is in decent shape, had dings and scuffs. But no to much paint peels as I have seen on others. D700's are the same, usually the grip rubber is coming loose where the upper palm hits the rubber to plastic body.
I have wanted a Pro body for years, now they have finally hit my budget for used gear. Why not I said. Besides I am waiting on the Z line prices to drop, so I will enjoy these great DSLR gear prices for a few years and upgrade to the Z line when the pros move on to the next thing.
Thanks for the content, you gained a sub from me due to your DSLR gear reviews.

If I remember correctly, The D3 and D700 share the same sensor. My D3 has about 152,000+ shutters on it so far and the body is still holding up pretty good so far! Thanks for the sub!

Mainly a portrait photographer here. While working a lot with d750 (which I love) and d7100 I missed the simpler picture quality of RAW files my old d7000. The old files could brake apart at extreme editing but not in important places. While on he newer ones the midtones of skin looked always kinda grey-ish, lacking the "natural" saturation despite wider dynamic range. Always dreamed about trying out a d700 and eventually bought a very unused one with a shutter at 18k. Just as I expected from the talks about it's legendary picture quality, it combines the old vividness with professional body and full controls. Yeah, it's a bit heavy, has no auto-ISO button and the viewfinder coverage is off, but it always feels great to work and to create with both on set and in color grading. It can also produce some filmy look due to it's more neutral highlights and open response to lens flare.

Love my two D700's, the photos they make are the best ive ever taken. Very artistic camera, especially when paired with the older Ai-S or D series lenses. Unbeatable :-)

Verry informative video. Do you know if merging three 12mp shots with this camera (taken by a super sharp 50mm prime) could provide excellent detail for acrylic prints?

    • @BoostLeekdMedia
      @BoostLeekdMedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

for prints, as long as the file is 300dpi and the printer can send you a 'proof' of the image to review before printing it, I would say the D700's 12mp files are more than enough. You can definitely merge 3 images but my rule of thumb for printing is to make sure the file is 300dpi. I believe 300dpi is a standard for most print shops for photography images as well.

@@BoostLeekdMedia Thank you for your opinion. I have seen someprinting exprts claiming that even 180ppi looks the same as 300ppi but have never done large prints so far. Other even say that photographers should evenly divide the maximum native printer resolution by 25 or 50% for max quality and set the dpi at this number. There are standards and myth but trial and error (test images) will show the truth.

I bought mine 3 years ago with 10k shots recorded, and pair it with a 85 1.8 D and a AF-S 50 1.4G for most of the time. I also use a manual 24 mm f2.8 and a 70-210 from the -80´s. I love it despite it´s shortcomings. It´s like with your best friends - you feel comfortable with them, you can always trust them and you know their strenghts and weaknesses. You ask your tech-nerdy friend to help you with your computer but turn to the farmer for help fixing a roof, right? I will never sell it, but I do want to buy an additional camera. There are times I wish for better dynamic range, a useable focus tracking system and better low light performance. I myself rearly find higher than 1600 acceptable.
I have put the strap from my D200 on it - for the arrogant people to judge my gear by ...

Anyone stating that something is outdated purely on age is ignorant to the use of said something, a horse & buggy can be used today and is out dated based only on the speed of modern traffic... That there camera is very useful today indeed in any situation it is put into!! What I would love to see is more fanboys of photography and less imitation picture takers stuck on gear!! Nice review!!

I love the files that this camera produces with its 12mp CCD chip and the anti-aliasing filter. The noise level at higher ISO is creamy and smooth looking even at ISO 6400 with a slight denoising filter applied. Mine has 340K and still going strong. Get a good image to pixel ratio size and the resolution is more than you need.

    • @BoostLeekdMedia

Whoa! 340k clicks and still going, thats awesome! 100% agreed with you about the higher iso quality. I just recently used the D700 at a concert and the grain definitely has an interesting 'characteristic' to it. And yes, the denoising is SO helpful too! Thanks for sharing!
