  • Wondering if the Nikon D850 is a good purchase in 2023? With so much excitement over mirrorless cameras, here are seven reasons why I chose the full-frame D850 DSLR camera as an upgrade from my Nikon D7000 crop-sensor camera.
00:00 Introduction & Reason for Upgrade
03:45 Full Frame: Wide Field of View
04:13 45MP Sensor: Large Print Quality
04:35 Better Value: Compared to D750
    08:03 Mirrorless: Expensive Switch
    08:34 Lens Adapter: Defeats Purpose
08:48 Noisy DSLR: Not a Big Issue
    09:13 Quality: Comparable
    11:10 Conclusion

I also bought a Nikon d850 this week. The decisive factor for me is the fact that there is a large selection of second-hand lenses. You can find almost new lenses at "small" prices, the Z mount and Canon RF mounts are much more expensive. And the D850's photo quality is superb. I think I have a wonderful hobby with it. Btw, nice and informative youtube channel 👍

How lovely to see such a charming lady photographers reaction on opening the box for the first time. I think we all underestimate that feeling of excitement at that moment. I switched from an APS-C D5500 to a D810 six years ago, and then three years ago, moved on to the D850. It is truly an epic camera and you'll never fail to be pleased with your results. Especially with those trinity lenses you just aquired. In fact, I very recently downgraded my ultrawide from the 14-24 to the 16-35 because it was both a heavy lens, and impossible to use filters without huge cost and inconvienience. The 16-35 has distortion, but one or two clicks in Photoshop etc and you're back in the room. I shoot landscape mostly, otherwise I would have kept the 14-24 as filters are very rarely needed in other kinds of work. I only use ND and Circular Polarisers so its much easier now. Going back to the camera, it is a mighty beast and does need lots of taming. The customisable buttons are as much of a boon as they are a curse, as oftentimes you forget what you have set them to do. I swapped my PV button from preview to exposure mode and a few weeks later couldnt figure out why I couldnt use preview on that button! The main thing though, is, you have probably the best camera Nikon ever made now, I think it is so durable you could use it to whack people over the head in a bar fight and it would still work just like new. I didn't see such a jump in resolution as you will, as the D810 was already well packed with pixels, but, there is a jump to be sure. The main thing I wanted to say was to thank you for reminding us just how joyous it is to have the release which a new camera (camera in particular) brings to us all. It is durable, but, treat it kindly and it will probably last you a lifetime. Just wait until you take one of your favourite shots with it, you'll be so pleased you updated.

It definitely felt like Christmas morning opening that box! I’m already so impressed with its durability… I photographed a waterfall a few weeks back where I walked behind the cascading water, and while it didn’t get drenched, there was enough overspray to get a bit damp. It held up like a champ! Hopefully I’ll never have to test out the bar fight scenario 😁, but I’m sure it’ll hold up to that as well. Lol! So far, no regrets at all in upgrading to the D850. I’m still getting used to its features, but I’m super happy with the photos I’m creating!

Very happy for you. I use the D810 since 2018, before I had the D7100. It was a huge upgrade, however the learning curve with Nikon is so easy, you will have a great time. The D850 is still one of the best cameras out there right now.

I started with a D70, then went to a D7100, picked up a refurbished D7200 body and use that almost exclusively now. But I've slowly been collecting FX lenses for the eventual leap to full frame. I wanted the 750, but waited for the bugs to be worked out and thought the D780 would be it. But I think after seeing all the amazing shots and videos taken with the D850, that will be my FX camera! I totally agree with you on mirror less camera's and how dslrs just work better for me.

I shoot an 850 for my two main arenas, small item product, and a sort of rural "street"/landscape. But through my grandson a genre came about to shoot youth sports athletic analytical videos (pitching mechanics, batting mechanics, etc.) As it turned out the quality desired and preferred optics (allowing me to hide behind a chain link fence) resulted in the D780 being the best option. Video a half a cut better that a z6 (better than the 850), using F mount glass, with my preferred OVF when not shooting video. Thing about it. Even with the z8 I still don't have a compelling reason to "upgrade"(?) to mirrorless except it's could become my "precious."

    Awesome!
I upgraded last year to a D500 from a D200 in order to shoot indoor sports (my daughters play a lot of volleyball). I bought an excellent used D500 from KEH.
I've had an excellent older version of the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR and an older version of the Nikon 28-70 f2.8 (non VR) in my lens arsenal for about a decade. I've always invested in GOOD GLASS (typically non DX) with the theory that you can use it on upgraded bodies over a much longer perion of time. I recently bought a used 14-24 f2.8 from KEH. It's an impressive lens. So now I have the Holy Trinity of pro grade lenses.
I'm waiting for more used D850s to become available now that the Z8 has been announced. Then I will snap one up.
You made a great purchase. The D850 is considered the finest DSLR ever made.

  • @artsilva
    @artsilva ปีที่แล้ว +1

Congrats. I too recently got a D850 after switching to mirrorless a decade ago and now back to DSLR. The other pros of DSLR shooting especially with the newer DSLRs like the D850 and D780 is the dual AF systems, the OVF where with EVFs of mirrorless you get lag due to its real world viewing to refresh rate if you are shooting fast subjects. The others are Much better battery life and the ability to natively use any F mount glass dating back to the early 1970s, oh and also it is universally rated as the best DSLR ever made for multiple uses..

Thank you, Misti. I've been shooting with a D750 for a few years now with some great F glass: 16-35mm f/4G, 24-70mm F/2.8G, 70-200mm f/2.8G, and a few primes. I'd like to upgrade, but like you, I'm torn on which way to go (D850 or Z7II), but want to still use my F lenses (yes, I'm aware of the FTZ adapter). Why not a D780? People took this as an incremental upgrade from the D750 but it's not; BSI sensor from the Z6 and Z6II, ruggedness of the D850 but with more features. Also, the only DSLR with usable Liveview and as a matter of fact the same system (including autofocus) as the Z counterparts. Finally, the only DSLR that support AF-P lenses (other than the D6), so truly every F-mount. I upgraded from the D750 I might add.
I also jumped to the Z system but will keep my D780 forever, I love it so much.

I used the D850 for so many events and was never disappointed. Then, I updated to the Z7, then very recently the Z9 (with quality Z lenses). I have yet to be able to capture photos as beautiful as those I captured with the D850. I'm sure it's my shortcomings, since the Z9 is in every way amazing (except what seems to be noisier photos at some ISO values). Nevertheless, I'm now returning to my D850 with a sigh of relief--so glad I kept it. I wish you the very best with your D850--may you have many years of wonderful photography. Going with the 850 is great. Going to the Z mount is silly. You have the great F mount ED lenses. So the 850 is an excellent choice. Robust, excellent performance, and excellent image quality. I am a Canon guy now, but had Nikon too and was happy with its performance. The best deal I think still is the DSLR. I want a Z5, but not now. I am waiting for more to go used, as I seldom will buy new. I save lots of money that way and still get a vendors warranty also. Enjoy your 850. What Nikon is still highly regarded for no matter what the newest is doing.

Congrats! You are correct, the newer/mirrorless cameras don’t take “better” photos. The mechanics are just different and video and autofocus are improved, which is beneficial in some ways and some ways unnecessary. But the actual photo quality of the D850 will always stand up against anything out there. I personally switched to the Z9 last year for my own reasons, but I am keeping my D850 because it’s just so good. IMO it’s still the best DSLR, a camera you will be happy with as long as you choose to own it! Happy shooting!

I think you made the right decision based on your new lenses. I have a D810 (along with a bunch of other Nikon bodies) and Olympus, Sony, Nikon & Fujifilm mirrorless cameras. I definitely think that mirrorless is the better option with cameras today, and I generally choose a mirrorless body over a DSLR these days when I head out to take photographs. But for full frame, I don't think you can go wrong with a D850 - I'd love one, but I'm not paying £2,200 when I have my D810! Nikon menus are pretty standard across all their cameras and the best/straightforward of all the manufacturers I have used, and you should have no problem adapting to the new camera menus. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about your new camera when you have had a chance to spend some time with it. I am sure you will love it!

8:30 That "selling point" of mirrorless being lightweight is such a scam from all camera brands. Because when you look at the majority of Z lenses, they're three times as big compared to the D lenses (which I use) and the same size if not sometimes twice as big compared to the G counterparts. Even micro 4/3 cameras and lenses are no longer compact like the first couple generations from 2012.
BTW awesome video! Glad to see people out there are still buying new Nikon DSLRs. I primarily use Nikon film cameras, but I had D200 since launch 2005 and sold it in 2021 for a Nikon Df. It didn't perform how I expected for weddings, so sold it and picked up three Nikon D700s instead.
Before choosing the Df however, I contemplated between it and the D850. I skipped on the D850 because it lacked three features I depend on: close subject priority AF, pop up flash and AF assist beam. Features that are crucial for low lit reception venues. I thought I could get away with the lack of those features with the Df, but nope. So I had to go back one generation with the D700.

    I shoot both Nikon DSLRs ( D7000, D610, D750, D850) and Mirrorless (z5 and Z6 ii)
It doesn't hurt to go mirrorless given that you can always use all of your F mount lenses via the FTZ adapter. It just broadens your perspective and mirrorless works like an Automatic car ( vs. stick shift )
I will probably continue to use DSLR because there's a certain character to these old F mount AFS -G lenses that the Z lenses are unable to give. I was a Mirrorless snob for years until I finally realized the advantages it can give you

Congrats on your new D850 and I like your channel you seem nice. I once had a Nikon camera but now I loath the brand and have shot other brands and now am a Pentaxian. A word of warning regarding the D850 from a channel that shoots Nikon called "Straight out of Camera" . Also the website by the famous Nikon shooter below discusses the problem. When Nikon made the D800 with 36 mega pixels, a certain number of lenses could not resolve the 36mp. Pentax uses this same sensor in its K-1ii. Then when the D850 came out with 45 mega pixels, even more lenses could not resolve the sensor. And this is a problem in every brand that when they bring in new models with more pixels, you have to re-learn photography slightly and maybe change lenses.
I would suggest that you return the D850 camera and swap it for the Z7ii, and adapt those lenses and invest in Z glass that will be future proof. Now I'm not telling you this because I think you're dumb or something, but this will ALSO BE A PROBLEM FOR PENTAXIANS soon. Pentax brought out its first full frame dslr with 36mp, and created all new full frame lenses for the camera. But there were also vintage lenses and the film era lenses like the Pentax Limited's that also needed to resolve on that 36mp sensor. I would presume that Pentax might do the 45 mega pixel some time in the future, but currently still sells its professional series medium format camera thats 50 mega pixel. So until Pentax upgrades the pixel size on the Pentax 645z, Pentax might hold off on a full frame 45mp or 50mp sensored camera.
So because Nikon is TRANSITIONING from dslr to mirrorless, I think mirrorless would be the better bet. In fact I would think Sony would be the better bet because they basically make the sensors, and upgrade their lenses accordingly before every company bar Canon (who make their own sensors) can.
But its ultimately your decision. If you look at the Mansurov site below the 14-24 and 24-70mm barely properly resolve the 45 mega pixel sensors. What he does conclude is that all the Nikon dslr lenses CANNOT RESOLVE THE 45MP, and few can resolve the 36mp, while others can do it stopped down (This is where your two lenses rests). He concludes that the Nikon Z lens ranges can all resolve 45 mega pixels no sweat. I have researched some of the Nikon Z range and the resolution figures are well off the charts. This was something I saw when I researched Pentax years ago that so much of their dslr lenses were out resolving Nikon and Canon lenses and why I switched.
This was also a problem with Fujifilm who recently released 2 cameras that are apsc crop sensored with 40 mega pixels, and many of their lenses cannot resolve it. Fujifilm even has a "Recommended List" but much like the Nikon recommended list its not too true as people are finding out. So Fujifilm users are having to dump some extremely sharp lenses, that cannot resolve the new 40 mega pixel cameras. And 40mp apsc works out to 90 mega pixel FF sensor. Fujifilm lenses also tested as off the chart sharp. I also had two Fujifilm bodies and 4 lenses including the 56mm 1.2, and yes, Fujis lenses were super sharp but lacked the character of Pentax glass. So I sold off all my Fujifilm gear last year, and now look in horror at what will be facing many Fuji users as they have to upgrade their lenses for 40mp and higher on apsc. That first series 56mm 1.2 tested sharper wide open @1.2 than the equivalent Nikon 50mm 1.8 at its sharpest which was @5.6, and cannot resolve on the Fuji 40mp bodies. - that was a ridiculously sharp prime lens with zero character and barely any 3D pop dimensionality.
So you need to factor in that we could be seeing full frame models of cameras in the next cycle having up to 90 mega pixels, and there will be a massive number of old dslr lenses that cannot resolve that sort of mega pixel counts, and will become literally worthless over night and orphans (Except to the film shooting guys). (The problem with lenses not resolving is as the pixels get smaller, lenses cast "airy disks" that cause more and more blurr as the pixels get smaller and smaller with each iteration of camera sensor. Not a problem on film)
I would return that D850, and exchange it for a Z7ii and adapt your existing zooms. Save up my money for SOME PRIME LENSES (preferably) in Z mount and sell off those zooms at a later date. You're always better off with primes as they're always sharper and better anyway.
But if you decide to keep it, then go on and enjoy it and it should serve you well for many many years. People rave about the D850, I don't know why, because it doesn't have IBIS like Pentax's do or Pentax Astrotracer, just maybe good auto focus and thats it. If you keep it, I would have to suggest prime lenses even off brand like Zeiss and Sigma should be able to resolve 45 mega pixels - maybe.
Dslr is not dead by the way.

DXO formed a list that recommends lenses for the D850 and this was the first time seeing this and they basically mostly recommended non Nikon lenses for the D850. This seems quite accurate too based on my own research of 3rd party lenses and concurs with the reviews I've seen on the real and proper lens review sites like Ephotozine and Lenstip. Optical limits and DXO is typically bulls**t in its reviews of Nikon and Canon lenses always ranking them higher than every other brand. But this list they formed is actually accurate and concurs with other reviewers - I am stunned. But that does not mean I will ever use DXO because of their past grievous lying.
The only list where Nikon is on top is telephoto primes because no one else makes telephoto primes anyway.
Like one of the sharpest 24-70 2.8 was the Sigma but on some youtube reviews they played it down and said it was mediocre, and on some other sites marked it similarly , but the real review sites had it as off the hook sharp. But the DXO puts the Sigma 24-35 f/2 on top and then the Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 which isn't as sharp, but has lower CA's. Similar with the ultra wide zooms section with the Tamron 15-30 on top. The Tamron 15-30 and 24-70 is rebadged for Pentax which means if Pentax does go 45mp, its got the trinity lenses for it. But I'd say 50mp will be the end point.
Look sharpness isn't everything. When we are talking about sharpness here we are talking about resolving ability - can the lens resolve the sensor or is it not happening. You can make exquisite pictures with un-sharp lenses because the lens has character brought on by CA's which help to produce the 3D effect down a single lens. Or lens flares that are used for artistic effect.
So if you stick with your D850 here is a great source.

Definitely a great choice. I have a D7500 and I prefer it to the Sony A7111. It just feels great in the hands and the menu makes sense. But the D850 is the ultimate AND you can use the original Nikon lenses. The Z lenses are nice but EXPENSIVE!!
Great purchase. I’m looking for one NOW! lol

Make sure the firmware is up to date [1.30, but at least 1.20] and then get CF Express Type B cards instead of XQD. XQD was a proprietary card format, owned by Sony but they didn't even use it. Nikon and a few others did. CF Express is an open format, and is the 'standard' for the foreseeable future. The card readers are cheaper since the XQD card readers have to be licensed from Sony. Delkin has a CF-Express[B] & SD combo card reader which is perfect for the D850/Z6II/Z7II.

Huh, this is strange... I do have an Instagram account. The link doesn't work when I'm not logged in, but as soon as I log in, it works (double-checked the settings and it is public). Instagram must be having a glitch. Anyway, if you're logged in you can find me @lovethatshotadventures It's a small account and I really should update it more often! Lol!

@@lovethatshotadventures The main reasons I moved to the Z system was for eye-tracking and for the near elimination of chromatic aberration with Z lenses.

@@heyheyleina3366 you mean the eyebrow tracking? The Z9 is the worst mirrorless camera you can actually spend money on. Better off with the canon R8, or a Sony, than a Z9. Only worse cameras than a Z9 is the Z7ii and Z6ii.

Congrats, but now that you are climbing the mega-pixel ladder you are going to see how good your technique is. More resolution is going to bring out all the "flaws" in your technique and lenses. You mentioned upgraded glass that is a great move. You may also think about getting battery grip and then you can take advantage of using the bigger batteries that go in the D4 and D5. Now go out and make images and have fun!

Setup Live View with Face Detect, and you'll find it works better for taking photos of people than the Z9. More accurate. Better BSI sensor with higher dynamic range. Unless you take photos of birds in flight, Group Autofocus through the Viewfinder and Face Detect with Live View are better than any Nikon autofocus system currently on the market. Find yourself a 28mm 1.4E for street photos used and you'll have the best camera setup on the market.

I agree with your reasons for not going mirrorless. Here are mine for what its worth. 1. Cheap F mount legacy glass, there are simply not enough Z lenses yet and they are way too expensive. 2. Battery life. DSLRs have a significantly longer battery life (more economical to run and better for the environment). 3. Weight. We aren't comparing like for like with say a D850 vs a Z7, a Z7 is significantly less capable than a D850 at the same price, but yes, has the same image quality. The better comparison is D850 vs Z8/9, not only more expensive but pretty much the same weight. 4. Lenses are getting bigger and bulkier as the AF motor moves into the lense not the camera. I like the small form factor of Nikon's older screw drive AF. 5. Adaptablity, older lenses on FTZ mount don't work with AF, even G lenses on Z mount I have found to be glitchy, and 3rd party lenses aren't recognised by the software. 6. OVF vs EVF. I don't like looking through a TV screen to see the world, an OVF and a live view screen, in my opinion is the best of both worlds and removing the OVF on mirrorless reduces the options, it doesn't give me more! 7. Mirrorless is an expensive marketing game that doesn't give any advantages for the extra price. My bag at the moment is a D780 (brilliant) and D850, I won't be changing anytime soon.

Well mirrorless cameras like the Nikon Z7ii do have IBIS. And when you shoot with higher megapixels you might have to use a higher shutter speed to avoid camera shake. If you get DXO PhotoLab or DXO PureRaw that's the best noise reduction software there is and it restores loss color due to high ISO. You can export to DNG raw and still edit in another editor if you want.

Very valid comment. 45,7MP need a lot more care whilst taking handheld shots than lower resolution camera bodies. The D7000 has 16MP iirc that compares to 36MP on full frame so it’s not that big of a deal. I switched to mirrorless when the Z6 came out and I never regretted it. The IBIS is amazing in the mirrorless bodies and my keeper rate with on sensor AF has grown significantly. I still own a D3 and a D500 though but they are sitting on the shelves most of the time. The only thing with mirrorless is the mediocre implementation of flash compatibility.
