I did security at the Hollywood Palladium, the last time the Crowes played there. They did two sets, & in between those sets, I got to talk to Steve for a good 10 or so minutes, & got to share my admiration for his story (we're the same age & were "late bloomers") & it's one of my favorite interactions with a famous musician/celebrity!

I remember when they were recording "Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" at Levon Helm's studio - I think it was night 2 - they were playing "Roll Old Jeremiah" and Paul Stacey signaled for them to stop and start over. It was right after Chris sings, "Wave goodbye to Albuquerque", and when they stopped, Chris said something to the effect of, "I guess we're not gonna make it to Sioux City Falls." Steve piped up from behind the kit: "Great place to stop a trip: before you reach Sioux City Falls. No offense to anyone from there or anything, I'm sure it's beautiful..." He was cracking jokes like that for the whole run of recording sessions, it was hilarious. Chris was , too - every night was like an electric VH1 Storytellers, only with brand-new songs.
I was around Steve a lot in the day. He would give me big hugs and lift me up off the ground. (I even worked up at American Recordings in Burbank in 1996.) But now, Gorman has no recollection of me whatsoever. Marc does, (MFF still gives me hugs,) Rich does, arrogant Chris does but won't acknowledge it. Gorman has a faulty memory. He probably doesn't remember your encounter with him either. But Gorman is brutally honest, and I appreciate that. ☮
'Southern harmony and musical companion' , oh boy what a title. But that was their second and best album, and Steve Gorman was absolutely the back bone of the band.
I totally agree. Every song on that album was outstanding. The drums on Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye and Sometimes Salvation had so much space they thundered!
There’s more to this story. Yes, when Chris Robinson issued his new demands in 2014, Rich Robinson and Steve Gorman very much had each other’s back and refused to comply w Chris’ outrageous demands. So TBC broke up officially in 2015. Then in 2016 Rich put together The Magpie Salute. Rich got former Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, Crowes bassist Sven Pipien, and former Crowes keyboardist Ed Harsch on board for this project. But the very first person he asked was Crowes drummer Steve Gorman. So there was obviously no problem between them at that point from Rich’s view. Gorman turned the gig down citing his steady gig as a radio host and not wanting to live the life of a touring musician ad this stage of life. Rich understood and was cool with that and with Steve. Rich was so cool about it that at the debut show of The Magpie Salute in NYC he used Steve’s audio from his radio show where he essentially gave a touching eulogy to the then recently passed Ed Harsch. Things turned sour between Steve and Rich (at least on Steve’s part) in early 2017 when Steve invited Rich to Nashville (where Steve lives) to perform at a benefit show Steve put together. Rich agreed to perform but then canceled at the last minute. Apparently (but unbeknownst to Rich) this seriously pissed Steve off. The next thing that happened was Steve put out his book which slammed both Chris and Rich. One definite lie contained in that book was Steve’s account of why Jimmy Page left the Crowes/Page tour in 2000. Steve claims Rich turned down Page’s offer to write songs together for the next Crowes album and that Page was insulted, got furious with Rich and then left the tour. Steve claimed Page didn’t want to be in Rich’s presence ever again. Problem with this was that there are several photos of Page with Rich AFTER that Crowes/Page tour. In every photo over the years both guys are hugging and smiling. AND Page is on record saying he never had issues with Rich. The actual reason Page left that tour was a money dispute with Crowes management over his percentage of the profits. I love Page but he is notoriously a tightwad. So they concocted a story that Page developed a back issue and had to stop the tour. As a lifelong fan of TBC I can safely say that that band was as dysfunctional as they come. And most of that dysfunction came from Chris Robinson - not Rich. Chris has always been a diva w a bad temper. The toxicity spewed from him. In short, he’s an asshole. But Steve was Chris’ best friend in the band. Steve was actually never particularly close to Rich who is a quiet guy and a bit of a loner. When Chris shat upon Steve in 2013 by demanding he dissolve his share of the band (and essentially become a hired hand) I think it threw Steve for a loop and his bitterness for having been involved w that band went though the roof. Rich’s last minute cancellation of the charity gig was an excuse to then hate Rich too.
FYI....Jimmy had a serious back issue and that's a fact. How do I know, my GF at the time worked for a company called Advantage Diagnostics and they did a MRI on Jimmy. She said he was very gimpy and obviously in pain when he arrived but he was a complete gentleman. For what's its worth...
Steve was very close to Chris in the beginning. Later on, Chris was close to those who also did drugs, Marc and Eddie. Steve was never using anything that much, not even alcohol. Rich was never that close to anybody, since he is, like you said, a loner, extreme introvert. ✌️
I was all set to see the Crowes with Page in Las Vegas at the Joint at the Hard Rock, only to be told getting off the plane by my buddy that it was canceled due to Jimmy Page having back issues. It wasn't until I read Gorman's book that I learned otherwise, whatever the cause may be. Now that I type this over 20 years later it still upsets me!!

He was probably my biggest influence as a drummer in the early 90’s when I first started gigging. The grooves for Remedy and Thorn in My Pride are still in my top five favorites of all time. Awesome drummer!
Sometimes that's just the way it is. For instance: Paul Rodgers, although an excellent show. It's just not the same as when he played with Bad company. I've seen him multiple times in both iterations. There's just something tighter with Bad Company. Even when as Paul Rodgers he'll play Bad Company songs. The benefit to seeing him as Paul Rodgers though is he'll do Free material.

Same here. Marc and Eddie were a HUGE part of why they sounded so great. I'm just glad I saw so many Crowes shows from the golden eras of '92-'97 and '05/'06 (and plenty before and after) to both put in perspective what a JOKE Chris and Rich have become, and to give me a lifetime of memories of better TBC days.
I saw them around 1990 open for the Michael Sheinker Group. It was an awesome show but everything I’ve ever heard in the press about this band was negative. They even got kicked off the ZZ Top tour. Always in court

Yup. As Steve makes clear in his book, perhaps only The Replacements did more to fuck up their own career than The Black Crowes did. And it was mostly Chris's decisions that did them in, too.
Without the Robinsons there wouldn't have been a band to begin with. Yeah, they did dumb shit. But lots of people do dumb shit when they're presented with fame & money & adulation. But I see no evidence that the Robinson brothers are worse than others that made it. They may have just been more honest, actually.
Steve's drum beats and fills was what got me into playing drums and realizing that soul groove and rock could go well together. It saddens me they can't honor the legacy.
Pretty sure in his book, Gorman said he resigned as a member of the band around 2000, after that he was as brought back as a paid employee, mostly at Rich’s urging, but not as a full member
The money thing’s all a bit weird. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood was apparently very egalitarian all split equally, so I wonder whether it all being about CR demanding the lion’s share of the money from that Black Crowes tour is a bit of an over-simplification of what happened.

First of all, CR is a scumbag. RR, almost got it right when he said no to his brothers demands in 2105. Then RR formed TMS with Marc Ford and ran that for 2 albums and a few years. He was going broke touring with no profit. Back to CR, the tragic end of Neal Casal (guitarist in The CR Brotherhood) by suicide, left CR w/o a solid touring band. Both brothers were now in need of a cash infusion, hence the reunited 'Black Crowes' w/o Gorman to cut into the profit stream. It's a damn shame all the way around. TMS and TCRB were both great bands. Sorry to say TBC is not TBC w/o Gorman and Marc Ford IMO.
the video does mention the book. and that after the book was released, Rich was still defending Gorman. So clearly the book didnt burn any bridges between Gorman and Rich.
The Davies brothers from The Kinks did it first!! And made way better music than the other 2 combined (and probably 3 of 4 brothers would admit that!)!!
They say, "Never Meet Your Heroes" . Chris was a di*k, Rich was distant. Steve was incredibly down to earth. I'm sure they put him at the front of the line for the meet and greet to prevent those with a strong grip from crushing those wall flowers.The fact remains, Steve Gorman is the nicest rock star I have ever met. (Special nod to Jackie Greene. He was a cool dude too.)
I was so excited to hear of the Crowes reunion. When I heard that Steven Gorman was being treated this way...No way. Lost interest. Steve Gorman was the back bone and heart of the band. Their loss.
I remember a local DJ in my area saying way back in the day, the first time The Black Crowes came through town touring Shake Your Money Maker, they were the coolest, very down to earth dudes. The next time they came through on tour, they were the biggest assholes you could imagine. Steve said the same thing in his book. Chris turned into a total rock star diva and was above it all.
I was working for a music venue and Rich was playing there one night. The owner always purchase photos for every show I worked. When we were going over shows she would not ever hang a photo of Rich in her venue because he was the rudest
I met Rich a couple times and he was really cool. But I have heard that he's rude as well. I guess it all depends on the circumstances. For instance: one time outside a restaurant on the afternoon of a Crowes show, he was sitting on a bench outside with a whole bunch of kids (perhaps he was babysitting for the entire band and crew?) as we approached. Most people probably would have gone up and bugged him, but I had no urge to. He looked harried enough already. However, in a guitar shop I had no reservations about approaching him. Same goes for after a soundcheck once when I ran into him outside while I was walking to our hotel.

I think most people can see from 100 miles away that this situation is that classic grreed and grabbing the light for themselves ego 'rock star' bs. It really does take a band and in too many bands this is the case. Kudos to the former drummer and I hope he sues their asses royal. 👍
Gormans book is fantastic. I love the Crowes. Always have. They will never sound better than when Steve was in the band. His creativity for his instrument is a huge part of why their sound was attractive. However, the Crowes are and always will be Chris and Rich Robinson.
Seems like exactly what happened to Oasis (although they haven’t tried reforming … yet!). I always remember something Eddie Van Halen said about David Lee Roth when he went solo … he called it “LSD” for lead singer disease as they always think they’re more important than everyone else in the band.

Here's the true story of it: Chris wanted to use the "pubes" cover of it, and the rest of the band absolutely hated it and thought it was professional suicide. Of course Chris won out in the end and it was yet another bullet in the collective foot of The Black Crowes.
People say the Gallaghers are vile but compared to the Robinsons their arrogance is almost tongue in cheek, plus most of the time it only involves the two, not the whole bands.
Given how many vintage rock acts are still selling tickets with one or even NO original members, the Robinson bros know they can always cash in till the day they die by throwing the BC name on a marquee. Most of the ticket buyers don't know or care who's playing, beyond maybe the singer, in some cases. They're paying for the nostalgia and and hour of music.
Because Chris had already tried to make him a contract player - that is what lead to the 2015 breakup. Once Rich needed money and eventually agreed to Chris' terms it was done. Even if Steve had never written his book, he was not welcome back because that splits the $$$ 3 ways, not the 2 the brothers agreed to

In all seriousness, when I saw Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes in 1999 and 2000, Jimmy Page spent the vast majority of his time onstage facing Steve, the both of them locked in together. It was apparent that Jimmy Page absolutely loved playing with Steve, and the Crowes in general. And then of course the brothers struck again and off Jimmy went.
In the early 90s, Chris and Rick were interviewed by a French musical magazine (Rock & Folk I think). The journalist, when addressing the question of their influences, mentioned the name of Led Zeppelin. Chris & Rick were particularly annoyed, saying they had nothing to do with Led Zeppelin and didn't even know their music (!). About 6/7 years later they were touring with Jimmy Page, playing mainly Led Zeppelin repertoire. Just saying.
The Black Crowes can go away permanently and it would be okay with me. I do feel bad for the drummer. He clearly is the good guy, decent one in that mess. I hope he wins his lawsuit.

I'll give you this: Gorman was a fairly pedestrian drummer until they did the tour with Jimmy Page in 1999. He changed playing all that Zeppelin stuff. You're out of your mind if you think "it's the brothers and everyone else", though. The quantum leap from their first album to second was due to the addition of two members who dramatically upgraded The Black Crowes' sound: Eddie Harsch and Marc Ford. They were never remotely as good without either, and I honestly don't care how good or bad Brian Griffin is. He's not Steve, and that's enough for me to stand clear - along with Eddie being dead and Steve and Marc being uninvited for cheaper, more controllable musicians.
I guess you've never been to one of their concerts then. I always thought Steve was the musical compass on stage, especially during their long (an amazing) live jams. To the point that when i n 2001 Steve left the band for the first time, they could not find a drummer who would fit the BC's music, and he brothers had to beg Steve to come back.
As a Deadhead since June 1986 I was shocked by John Mayer playing guitar for The Dead. Then I heard him play and was impressed. Guy's like Chris Robinson or Henry Rollins are always angry and ripping others.
Always felt Gorman was the one true linchpin of the band. THAT'S when I knew the Black Crowes were officially done in that capacity the moment he finally called it quits for good back in 2014. He's right about one thing: Robinson brothers can keep playing under that name, but all they're doing is merely using it as a "brand" for marketing purposes. Personally, I still haven't gotten over lead guitarist Marc Ford leaving the band (what a HUGE loss that was in the grand scheme of things) and keyboardist Ed Harsch's passing in 2016 pretty much killed any chance of the 'classic' Crowes lineup ever reuniting again. On the other hand, glad Gorman still has his sanity intact after enduring all those years behind the drum kit supporting one of the most inherently dysfunctional rock acts in recent memory.
Matter if you like it or not ,it's still a business , one of your members are making more money than you, you're going to be pissed cuz you're the founding member of that band is still a business you start as friends but it turns into a business you don't work for free

Been more than once. They already tried to sell out in 1999 and they failed at selling out. Now, they've sold out with Live Nation in tow and Live Nation is showing how the brothers how to do it.

Then Jimmy offered to help them out with their all-important next album and Rich said, "No thanks, my brother and I already have a whole bunch of great songs we wrote." It wasn't like Page wanted to play all over it or take the spotlight; he offered to play a solo or produce the album because he knew how important that first album on their new Virgin deal was for the band. And we all know how "Lions" turned out.....
Steve Gorman has literally become more famous than the Crowes. I’ve done deep dives into this band. The Robinson bros have screwed this up. Chris more than anyone. Steve isn’t wrong.

I loved The Black Crowes, but rarely have I been so bored as I was when I went and saw - or got guilted into seeing -CRB trying so hard (and failing miserably) to be The Grateful Dead. Even doing Mr. Charlie couldn't save them that night. To each their own, I guess. On another note, I would have no problem believing "I Ain't Hiding" came straight out of Chris Robinson's asshole.

Same here. Marc and Eddie were a HUGE part of why they sounded so great. I'm just glad I saw so many Crowes shows from the golden eras of '92-'97 and '05/'06 (and plenty before and after) to both put in perspective what a JOKE Chris and Rich have become, and to give me a lifetime of memories of better TBC days.

I saw them around 1990 open for the Michael Sheinker Group. It was an awesome show but everything I’ve ever heard in the press about this band was negative. They even got kicked off the ZZ Top tour. Always in court

Without the Robinsons there wouldn't have been a band to begin with. Yeah, they did dumb shit. But lots of people do dumb shit when they're presented with fame & money & adulation. But I see no evidence that the Robinson brothers are worse than others that made it. They may have just been more honest, actually.
Steve's drum beats and fills was what got me into playing drums and realizing that soul groove and rock could go well together. It saddens me they can't honor the legacy.
Pretty sure in his book, Gorman said he resigned as a member of the band around 2000, after that he was as brought back as a paid employee, mostly at Rich’s urging, but not as a full member
The money thing’s all a bit weird. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood was apparently very egalitarian all split equally, so I wonder whether it all being about CR demanding the lion’s share of the money from that Black Crowes tour is a bit of an over-simplification of what happened.

@@robpaxson4455 - Correct. It's why Steve used his leverage in 2005 for the reunion and why he was so pissed off they dissolved it in 2001 with a new deal with Virgin for a million a record. Steve all of a sudden went from income to no income.
If i remember correctly, Rich agreed of having him back as a fully fledged member (I read the book too long ago, i may be wrong).

First of all, CR is a scumbag. RR, almost got it right when he said no to his brothers demands in 2105. Then RR formed TMS with Marc Ford and ran that for 2 albums and a few years. He was going broke touring with no profit. Back to CR, the tragic end of Neal Casal (guitarist in The CR Brotherhood) by suicide, left CR w/o a solid touring band. Both brothers were now in need of a cash infusion, hence the reunited 'Black Crowes' w/o Gorman to cut into the profit stream. It's a damn shame all the way around. TMS and TCRB were both great bands. Sorry to say TBC is not TBC w/o Gorman and Marc Ford IMO.

They say, "Never Meet Your Heroes" . Chris was a di*k, Rich was distant. Steve was incredibly down to earth. I'm sure they put him at the front of the line for the meet and greet to prevent those with a strong grip from crushing those wall flowers.The fact remains, Steve Gorman is the nicest rock star I have ever met. (Special nod to Jackie Greene. He was a cool dude too.)

I remember a local DJ in my area saying way back in the day, the first time The Black Crowes came through town touring Shake Your Money Maker, they were the coolest, very down to earth dudes. The next time they came through on tour, they were the biggest assholes you could imagine. Steve said the same thing in his book. Chris turned into a total rock star diva and was above it all.
I was working for a music venue and Rich was playing there one night. The owner always purchase photos for every show I worked. When we were going over shows she would not ever hang a photo of Rich in her venue because he was the rudest

I met Rich a couple times and he was really cool. But I have heard that he's rude as well. I guess it all depends on the circumstances. For instance: one time outside a restaurant on the afternoon of a Crowes show, he was sitting on a bench outside with a whole bunch of kids (perhaps he was babysitting for the entire band and crew?) as we approached. Most people probably would have gone up and bugged him, but I had no urge to. He looked harried enough already. However, in a guitar shop I had no reservations about approaching him. Same goes for after a soundcheck once when I ran into him outside while I was walking to our hotel.

Gorman is a great drummer and he should be in the band. But I saw TBC two weeks ago and they were fantastic. Great gig. Love them.
I think most people can see from 100 miles away that this situation is that classic grreed and grabbing the light for themselves ego 'rock star' bs. It really does take a band and in too many bands this is the case. Kudos to the former drummer and I hope he sues their asses royal. 👍

Gormans book is fantastic. I love the Crowes. Always have. They will never sound better than when Steve was in the band. His creativity for his instrument is a huge part of why their sound was attractive. However, the Crowes are and always will be Chris and Rich Robinson.
Seems like exactly what happened to Oasis (although they haven’t tried reforming … yet!). I always remember something Eddie Van Halen said about David Lee Roth when he went solo … he called it “LSD” for lead singer disease as they always think they’re more important than everyone else in the band.
How cool would it be to have Gorman and ford in that current tour. Bummer we'll never see that.

Here's the true story of it: Chris wanted to use the "pubes" cover of it, and the rest of the band absolutely hated it and thought it was professional suicide. Of course Chris won out in the end and it was yet another bullet in the collective foot of The Black Crowes.

Given how many vintage rock acts are still selling tickets with one or even NO original members, the Robinson bros know they can always cash in till the day they die by throwing the BC name on a marquee. Most of the ticket buyers don't know or care who's playing, beyond maybe the singer, in some cases. They're paying for the nostalgia and and hour of music.
Like the Synyrd tribute band...now that Gary is gone they will set up yet another fairwell tour...RVZ must be turning over in his grave...

Yep - R & R is a vicious game especially when eventually "it's all about the money".
Because Chris had already tried to make him a contract player - that is what lead to the 2015 breakup. Once Rich needed money and eventually agreed to Chris' terms it was done. Even if Steve had never written his book, he was not welcome back because that splits the $$$ 3 ways, not the 2 the brothers agreed to
I know they love the money, but I can't help but wonder if Steve's book is part of the reason they are trying so hard to keep this charade together. "We'll show him!"

Depends on which one you meet, I guess. Steve is a great guy. Never met Chris, but all I have heard (from others who did) is that he is a major dick. Rich was cool the couple times I met him, same goes for Sven Pipien and Paul Stacey.

@@kimberc813 He LOVED Steve Gorman! Oddly, they even took a nap together (on separate couches on the afternoon of a show, which is amusing part of Steve's book). In all seriousness, when I saw Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes in 1999 and 2000, Jimmy Page spent the vast majority of his time onstage facing Steve, the both of them locked in together. It was apparent that Jimmy Page absolutely loved playing with Steve, and the Crowes in general. And then of course the brothers struck again and off Jimmy went.
Rich just had to fuck that all up. Ego and just looked miserable all the time.

In the early 90s, Chris and Rick were interviewed by a French musical magazine (Rock & Folk I think). The journalist, when addressing the question of their influences, mentioned the name of Led Zeppelin. Chris & Rick were particularly annoyed, saying they had nothing to do with Led Zeppelin and didn't even know their music (!). About 6/7 years later they were touring with Jimmy Page, playing mainly Led Zeppelin repertoire. Just saying.
I met Chris on South street in Philly and mentioned Marc Ford was such a talent. He got so angry and left the store. Lol. Whatever

The stories are just unreal. They're really bad human beings and they never really grew up in their 20s, so theey're emotionally stunted as humans. Truth. Never had a job in their life and it shows.
I used to think Chris was the big problem, but I've seen over the last few years that Rich is just as much of a problem as Chris. He pretended to have Gorman's back when the Crowes broke up, then he goes and starts the Magpie Salute, doesn't make money, him and Chris make up, leave Gorman out of it(which mind you was what Rich was accusing Chris of when they broke up), then Rich goes and ends the Magpie Salute by changing his phone number and not saying anything to Marc Ford. Nice guy, that Rich.

I always liked the black crows and I couldn’t tell you for the life of me who the drummer was…idk why they just weren’t that kinda band. There were the brothers and everyone else.
I'll give you this: Gorman was a fairly pedestrian drummer until they did the tour with Jimmy Page in 1999. He changed playing all that Zeppelin stuff. You're out of your mind if you think "it's the brothers and everyone else", though. The quantum leap from their first album to second was due to the addition of two members who dramatically upgraded The Black Crowes' sound: Eddie Harsch and Marc Ford. They were never remotely as good without either, and I honestly don't care how good or bad Brian Griffin is. He's not Steve, and that's enough for me to stand clear - along with Eddie being dead and Steve and Marc being uninvited for cheaper, more controllable musicians.
I guess you've never been to one of their concerts then. I always thought Steve was the musical compass on stage, especially during their long (an amazing) live jams.
To the point that when i n 2001 Steve left the band for the first time, they could not find a drummer who would fit the BC's music, and he brothers had to beg Steve to come back.
I could see how alot of people felt that way... But any real fan knew better.. Egos can kill a band... And Chris was always off the hook.
Steve’s playing on the Zep tunes was incredible. Only other drummer to come close to Bonzo was Michael Lee.
As a Deadhead since June 1986 I was shocked by John Mayer playing guitar for The Dead. Then I heard him play and was impressed. Guy's like Chris Robinson or Henry Rollins are always angry and ripping others.
Saw them in '92! Their all time peak.🔥What followed were up's and down's. Forth and back. The spirit was gone and so were the Black Crowes.😢

The Black Crowes Session Musicians that play The Black Crowes is a pretty good band if you tell me. Nice to have Chris and Rich creating again.
Always felt Gorman was the one true linchpin of the band. THAT'S when I knew the Black Crowes were officially done in that capacity the moment he finally called it quits for good back in 2014. He's right about one thing: Robinson brothers can keep playing under that name, but all they're doing is merely using it as a "brand" for marketing purposes. Personally, I still haven't gotten over lead guitarist Marc Ford leaving the band (what a HUGE loss that was in the grand scheme of things) and keyboardist Ed Harsch's passing in 2016 pretty much killed any chance of the 'classic' Crowes lineup ever reuniting again. On the other hand, glad Gorman still has his sanity intact after enduring all those years behind the drum kit supporting one of the most inherently dysfunctional rock acts in recent memory.

Been more than once. They already tried to sell out in 1999 and they failed at selling out. Now, they've sold out with Live Nation in tow and Live Nation is showing how the brothers how to do it.

Then Jimmy offered to help them out with their all-important next album and Rich said, "No thanks, my brother and I already have a whole bunch of great songs we wrote." Who ELSE would turn that down??? It wasn't like Page wanted to play all over it or take the spotlight; he offered to play a solo or produce the album because he knew how important that first album on their new Virgin deal was for the band. And we all know how "Lions" turned out.....
Steve Gorman has literally become more famous than the Crowes. I’ve done deep dives into this band. The Robinson bros have screwed this up. Chris more than anyone. Steve isn’t wrong.

I loved The Black Crowes, but rarely have I been so bored as I was when I went and saw - or got guilted into seeing -CRB trying so hard (and failing miserably) to be The Grateful Dead. Even doing Mr. Charlie couldn't save them that night. To each their own, I guess. On another note, I would have no problem believing "I Ain't Hiding" came straight out of Chris Robinson's asshole.
Read his book. It is really good and the brothers are brilliant and stupid at the same time.
